COMBINED SLATE-CLEANER AND PENCIL-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,652, dated March 28, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. METOALF, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented anew and Improved Combined Slate- Oleaner and Pencil-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to furnish a cleanly, convenient, and inexpensive article for use in cleaning slates.

Theinvention consists in a combined waterreceptacle and sponge-holder, which is also constructed for attachment on a pencil, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device connected with a pencil and in the position of use, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the device.

A is the pencil'holder and cleaner, consisting of the parts next described.

a is the Water-receptacle, made of metal or other material, of suitable sizeand form, and preferably of the thimble shape shown.

cleaner: The point of the pencil may be put in the clamp b for protection when not in use, and the device thus attached will serve also to prevent pencils rolling off the desk.

For use as a cleaner,a few drops of water will be shaken on the slate and the slate then rubbed off. The pencil serves as a handle; or, ifdesired, the device can be used without the pencil.

The combined pencil-holder and slate-cleaner is a convenient and cleanly article for the use of children and other persons.

I do not limit myself to the construction precisely as shown. The sponge may be attached in any suitable manner, and the wateraperture may communicate with the sponge. The clamping 'device of the pencil-clamp b may also be differently constructed.

Having th usdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The slate-cleaner and pencil-holder consisting of apertured water-receptacle a, cork d, sponge e, and pencil-clamp b, combined for use substantially as shown and described.
