ATTACHMENT FOR LEAD-PENOILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,473, dated September 29, 1896.

new and usefullmprovements in Attachments for Lead-Pencils; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to thefigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in attachments for lead-pencils; and it consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which willbe fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of the device, the tape being shown partly withdrawn from its casing. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the device, which is shown on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line 00 as, Fig. 2, the parts being further enlarged. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken through the casing on the line y y, Fig. 2, looking downward on the inner surface of the disk made fast within the casing.

Let the numeral 5 designate a cylindrical casing having a thimble extension 5, adapted to slip over one extremity of the pencil 6 and fit tightly thereon. Within the casing and adjacent the top of the pencil is made fast a disk or head 7, having a central lug 7, in which is formed a recess 7, adapted to receive one extremity of the spindle 8, whose opposite extremity is fast on the cap 9. The cap is detachable and has a spring-flange 9 formed thereon and adapted to slip over a counterpart circumferential bead 5, formed on the outer extremity of the casing. The cap 9, however, when in place fits tightly on the casing and is fast thereon for all practical purposes when the device is in use. Also located within the casing 5 and surrounding the spindle is a rotatable sleeve 10, which fits over the lug 7 at one extremity and engages a lug 9 or other suitable bearing formed on the cap 9 at the opposite extremity. The tape 12 is attached to this sleeve. the spindle 8 and located within the sleeve is a spiral spring 13, having one extremity attached to the cap 9 and the opposite extremity attached to the rotatable sleeve. The casing 5 is slotted, as shown at 5. The tape 12 passes through this slot. To the outer extremity of the tape is attached a stop 14.,which prevents the outer extremity of the tape from entering the casin g under the influence of the spring. This stop also gives the user a hold in drawing the tape out of the casing.
In using the device the pencil is held in one hand firmly while the tape is drawn out with the other. During the operation of pulling out the tape the spindle 8 remains stationary, the sleeve 9 rotates, and the spiral spring 13 is placed under tension. As soon as the tape is released it returns automatically to the casing under the influence of the spring.
The device may be applied to a penholder as well as a pencil, or to any other similar article or device, forming a suitable holder therefor. The device is both ornamental and useful in connection with any article of the class stated to which it may be applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a pencil, or other holder of similar shape, of the device herein described, comprising the slotted cylindrical casing having a thimble extension adapted to slip over the end of the pencil, the disk 7 fastened in the casing and having a centrally- -recessed lug, a cap applied to the outer extremity of the casing and having a springflange grooved to engage a counterpart bead formed on the casing, the cap being also formed with a central spindle having one ex- Coiled around tremity made fastto the cap while the opposite extremity engages the lug formedon the disk, the rotatable sleeve surrounding the spindle while its extremities respectively engage the lugs formed on the cap and disk, a coil-spring located within the sleeve and surrounding the spindle, one of its extremities In testimony whereof I affix my signature being attached to the cap While the opposite in the presence of two Witnesses. extremity is made fast to the sleeve, and the tape having one extremity attached to the EMMET P.
