JNVENTOR A tlowzey Patented Mar. v15, 1910.
FRANK W. BROTZ, 013 SILVER CREEK, NEW YORK.
LINE-CHALKING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1910.
Application filed January 6, 1909. Serial No. 471,001.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. Bnorz, of Silver Creek, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line- Chalking Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in line chalking device, the object being to provide a simple and compact device that will hold the chalk always in contact with a cord being drawn through the device, and which presents one edge only of the chalk to the cord, thereby preventing wast-e.
With this end in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved holder. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section of same.
1 represents the body of the holder consisting preferably of a block of wood, of
such size and shape that it may be conveniently carried in a pocket.
The body 1, is preferably rounded at one end and straight at the other, and is provided with the cylindrical pocket 2 formed in one face of the block nearer the rounded end and extending nearly through same, and with an open slot 3, extending from and through the rounded end of the body, back to the opposite side of the pocket, the said slot being in the plane of the bottom of the pocket 2, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
4 is the follower which is preferably a metal disk of a size and shape to conform to the pocket, and forms a closure for the same. This follower is loosely mounted at its center on the central portion of the U- shaped spring 5, which latter projects rearwardly to the straight end of the body 1, the two members of the spring being coiled near their free ends to increase the spring action, and their free ends are bent forwardly and secured in the straight edge of the body. The body 1 is provided in its top face with two grooves 6 extending through that portion of the body in line with the two members of the spring 5, for the reception of the two members of the latter, thus permitting the spring to exert its pressure on the follower until all the chalk has been used up, without bending or arching the springs to any extent, as would be necessary if the latter projected over the top face of the body.
The follower 4 is provided with a peripheral flange 7 which projects outwardly sufficiently to guide the follower in its movements thus holding the latter parallel to the bottom surface of the recess 2. If desired the block of chalk may be secured to the follower, but this is not essential as the follower will always retain the block irrespective of its size and shape within the pocket and on the floor of the latter.
To chalk a line, it is simply necessary to place the line in the slot 3 and either move the cord in contact with the chalk, or move the device along the cord. As the chalk is firmly pressed against the bottom of the pocket, the cord which is in the plane of the bottom of the pocket will necessarily come in contact with the chalk. With this device the lower end of the block of chalk is the only part exposed to the cord, and as it wears away at the bottom, the spring pressed follower will force the block down, thus presenting a new surface to the action of the cord. The device is exceedingly simple and convenient to carry around and so long as any portion of the chalk is in the pocket, no matter how small, the device is ready for instant use with any piece of cord that can be passed into slot 3.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
1. In a line chalking device, the combination with a body having a pocket therein, and an open slot through the body and communicating with the pocket at the bottom or closed end of the latter, of a spring secured to the body at a point outside of the pocket, and a follower hinged to the spring and forming a yielding closure for the pocket.
2. In a line chalking device, the combination with a body having a pocket therein, an open slot through one end communicating with said pocket, and slots in its top surface of spring arms secured to the body and In testimony whereof, I have signed this adapted to pass into the slots in the top of specification in the presence of two subscribsaid body and a disk shaped follower located Within the pocket and secured to the end ing Witnesses.
of the spring, the said follower adapted to FRANK WV. BROTZ. hold the chalk on the bottom of the pocket \Vitnesses:
and in the plane of the open slot, snbstan- GEORGE DEAN,
