Patented Feb. 12, rate;
Application filed Novembe'rlS, 1916. Serial No. 131,665.
To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. REILLY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and a residentof the city of Neiv 'York, borough of Manhattan, in the county andrstate of New York, have invented a new and improved Pencil-Sharpener Clip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 1
This invention relates to pencil sharpenmg devices and particularly to an improved combinationclip and sharpening device.
The object in view isv to provide a clip and sharpening device especiallly adapted for sharpening the lead used in a magazine lead pencil. 3
Another object in view is to provide a clip for a pencil using a removable lead in which the clip will act in the double capacity of a clipfor holding the pencil body in position in the pocket and as a sharpening member for the lead when removed from the pencil body, the sharpener acting as a I rounded end for the clip.
' or sharpener end In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan view ofa pencil with a clip embodying the invention shown applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clip shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the lower part 2, the samebeing shown on an. enlarged scale. p p
Referrin to the-accompanying drawing by numera s, -1 indicates the pencil body having the lead 2 held in place by suitable mechanism in the lower end 3 of the body 1, the particular construction of pencil body and mechanism-at end 3 not forming any Part of the invention; Arranged; on the body 1 i523, clip 4 which is provided with into a coiled end 8.
encircling arms 5 and 6 and a'downwardly extending tongiie 7 -,wh1ch merges into a sharpener 8. "It is evident that the upper shown inithe drawing, as for instance, by being formed straight and riveted or secured to the body 1 in some other manner.- As far as the present invention is concerned the clip could be made in provided some sort of a 7 is produced merging The extreme end of the is formed into coil 8 is any suitable shape clamping tongue -tongue 7 before it of the. clip shown in Fig,
wh ch is secured to t1on at one end and is provided with a pensharpened or provided with a bevel 9whereby an edgelO' is produced, edge 10 being at an'angle so that when the parts are coiled for producing coil 8 a tapering socket will be the-result with the edge .10 arranged on an angle for acting on the lead2 when positioned as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Whenever the lead 2 same may be removed and placed into thesharpening device, namely, in coil 8, and rotated for a few times, whereupon the edge 10 will act on the lead point. It will be observed merges into the body of tongue 7 andproduces a'rounded contact portion 11 while the coil itself is an enlargement, thereby producing an end to the tongue which will readily slip over the pocket when applying the clip to the pocket.
hat I claim is: 1. A clip of the character described, com
prising a body formed with encircling porand produce a that the coil 8- I sharpener and as a guide becomes dull the a pocket engagmg portion, said pocket engaging portion comprising a metallic shank the pencil engaging porcil sharpener at the other end, said pencil sharpener being arranged toact as a guide to enable the pocket engagin portion to be guided over the outer edge 0 a pocket.
heimproved pencil attachment comprising a band forattachment to a pencil, a spring shank portion connected with the band and adapted to extend alongside of the pencil whereby the device may cooperate with a penc'il held therein for attachment to a pocket, and a pencil sharpener on the opposite end which the band is attached, said pencil sharpener beingarranged to act as a guide to enable the pocket engaging portion to be guidedover the outer edge ot a pocket.
4. The improved pencil attachment which consists of a pencil engaging portion and of a pocket engaging portion, said pocket engaging. portion having a shank which is of the shank from that to secured to the pencil engaging portion, and
I a sharpener secured to said pocket engaging ened inner end and arranged to act as a portion which has a hole therein at one side of Which is a knife edge and which :is arranged to act as a guide to enable the pocket engaging portion to be guided over the outer edge of a pocket.
5. The improved penc11 attachment which consists of a pocket engaging portion, and I of a'pencilengagi'ng portion; said pocket engaging portion comprislng a shank and guide to enable the pocket engaging portion to be guided over the outer edge of a pocket.
, w 6. The improved pencil attachment-which consists of apencil engaging portion and a pocket engaging portion of spring metal secured to said pencil engaging portion at one end and'provided at its free end with a lead sharpener, said lead sharpener consisting of a cone-shaped spiral which is sharp ened at its inner end to form a knife edge. andarranged to act as a guide to enable the pocket engaging portion to be guided over the outer edge of a pocket.
