Description

May 24, 1955 A. E. RANDALL SHARPENER Filed April 8, 1954 Arthur E. Ronda/l INVENTOR.
BY ad A Allarntjs Unitgd States Patent SHARPENER Application April 8, 1954, Serial No. 421,872
4 Claims. (Cl. 120-93) assignor of ten per cent This invention relates to a sharpener and more particularly to a combination pencil clip and sharpener.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved sharpener for use with a pencil which will serve as a clip for retaining the pencil in a users pocket and also as a means for sharpening the pencil to a tapered writing point.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved sharpener which has convenient means for gripping the same for sharpening a pencil.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved sharpener which can be simply and efliciently adjusted longitudinally of a pencil on which it is mounted.
A yet further object of this invention is to provide an improved sharpener which is simple and efiicient in construction, and durable and lasting in use.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved sharpener shown mounted in position on a pencil;
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the improved sharpener forming the subject of this invention;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the sharpener forming the subject of this invention showing the mounting of the sharpening means;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along section line 4--4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially along section line 5--5 of Figure 3.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the improved sharpener forming the subject of this invention includes, a tapered body which is formed of any suitable material such as plastic or the like. The body 10 is provided at its enlarged end with a pair of arms 12 extending therefrom. The arms 12 are semicircular in cross-section and have the free ends spaced from each other a short distance. The opening formed by the arms 12 has its longitudinal axis extending substantially parallel to the side of the tapered body 10 from which the arms 12 extend.
Secured to the other end of the body 10 and extending therefrom in the same direction as the arms 12 is a nib 14. When a pencil 16 is inserted through the openings formed by the arms 12 the nib 14 will engage the pencil 16 to frictionally retain the pencil 16 within the opening formed by the arms 12. Further, the opening formed by the arms 12 is of slightly less diameter than that of the pencil whereby the arms 12 will also frictionally engage the pencil 16. As will be readily apparent, when it is desired to secure the pencil on the pocket of the user the wall of the pocket is inserted between the nib 14 and the pencil 16 and will be frictionally retained therein.
The body 10 is further provided with a tapered bore 13 2,708,905 Patented May 24, 1955 extending from the enlarged end thereof longitudinally toward the small end. An enlarged recess 20 is formed in the small end of the body 10 and in communication with the end of the tapered bore 18. The face of the body 10 opposite the ends 12 is substantially fiat and is pro vided with a recess 22 extending longitudinally thereof. A slot 24 extends through the wall of the body 10 and communicates the tapered bore 18 with the recess 22. A cutting blade 26 is adapted to be positioned within the recess 22 and maintained therein by means of a suitable fastener 28. The cutting member has the cutting edge 30 thereof disposed in the slot 24 whereby when a pencil is inserted in the tapered bore 18 and rotated the cutting edge 30 will shave the pencil to a tapered writing point. The recess 20 will receive the bits of graphite shaved from the pencil and retain the same during the sharpening operation.
In practical use of the device, when it is desired to use the sharpener as a pencil clip, the pencil is placed in position between the arms 12 and with the nib 14 engaging the pencil. When it is desired to sharpen the pencil the pencil is removed from between the arms 12 and placed in the tapered slot 18. The extension formed by the arms 12 provides a convenient means whereby the sharpener may be gripped to rotate the same for shaving the end of the pencil to a tapered point. The graphite shaved from the pencil will be retained in the recess 20 during the sharpening operation so as not to soil the hands of the person sharpening the pencil. After the pencil has been sharpened and removed from the tapered bore 18 the body 10 can be inverted to allow the graphite shavings to fall from the recess 20.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equiva lents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A combined pencil clip and sharpener comprising an elongated tapered body, pencil gripping means secured to one end of said body and extending therefrom, said body being provided with a longitudinally extending tapered bore, said bore extending from the said one end of said body, sharpening means mounted on said body and intersecting said bore and a nib mounted on the other end of said body and extending therefrom in the same direction as said pencil gripping means.
2. A combined pencil clip and sharpener comprising an elongated tapered body, pencil gripping means secured to one end of said body and extending therefrom, said body being provided with a longitudinally extending tapered bore, said bore extending from the said one end of said body, sharpening means mounted on said body and intersecting said bore and a nib mounted on the other end of said body and extending therefrom in the same direction as said pencil gripping means, said pencil gripping means comprising a pair of opposed arms, said arms being resiliently engageable with a pencil for retaining said body thereon.
3. A combined pencil clip and sharpener comprising an r elongated tapered body, pencil gripping means secured to one end of said body and extending therefrom, said body being provided with a longitudinally extending tapered bore, said bore extending from the said one end of said body, sharpening means mounted on said body and intersecting said bore and a nib mounted on the other end of said body and extending therefrom in the same direction as said pencil gripping means, said body having a slot 0 4 a extending along one side thereof opposite said pencil grip- References Cited in the file of this patent ping means, said slot communicating with said tapered UNITED STATES PATENTS bore, said sharpening means being disposed 1n said slot. 1 85 4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said body is & provided with an enlarged recess communicating with. 5 2:122:386 Wells 1938 the small end of said tapered bore.
