Description

May 26,.l931.- J. A. LARSON PENCIL SHARPENER AND HOLDER Filed July 12, 1930 Larson ATTORNEY AVENTOR 77 F142 Fi .3
Patented Ma 26, 1931 UNITED STATES JOHN A. LARSON, F SEATTLE; WASHINGTON y PENCIL SHARPENER AND HOLDER Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a pencil sharpener in which the sharpening blade is open ready for use at all times;
and at the same time protected.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pencil sharpener in which a sharpener, clip, and eraser are combined in a single unit.
A still further object of the invention is to 5 provide a combination pencil sharpener and clip which may also be used to protect the point of the pencil.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a pencil sharpener and clip which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these ends in view the invention embodies a clip having an eraser in one end, and a sharpened blade mounted in an offset portion thereof so that it is adaptable to sharpen pencils.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the clip in place upon a pencil as it may be used as a clip.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail showing the face of the clip.
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the clip with a portion broken away.
Figure 4 is a cross section through th knife blade on line 44 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a detail showing an alternate means for holding the knife.
'In the drawings the device is shown as it would be made wherein numeral 1 indicates a cylindrical section forming the body of the clip, numeral 2 the clip, and numeral 3 the knife.
The body 1 may be of any suitable design or size and is preferably made so that it will frictionally grip the surface of a pencil over which it may be placed. The sides .of the member 1 may be provided with slots 4, the

inner edges of which are comparatively sharp so thatt-hey will assistin gripping the sides-of the pencil. It will be noted that. an eraser 5 may be held inthe upper end of the g body 1.
At'thei lower end of the member 1 is'an extension 6 in which the knife 3 is located, and which also-forms the clip 2. The portion 6 extends outwardto a point 71, then upward to a: point 8, thenoutwand to apoint then downward to a point 10. and then outward forming a compound curve which forms the clip 2.. The offset portion between the points 7 and 10" is made with the central part removed thereby forming-two straps 1 1 and31 2 at the sides with a spacebetween them. The blade 3 may be made of a piece of knife steel with: both edges sharpened as shown'in-Figure 4'. an-d 'is pressed between the members 11 and 1 2 so that the edges at the ends will'be forced into the sides of the members.1i1 and 12" in the portions between the points 7: and 8? and 9 and 10, so. that when in place the blade 3 will be firmly held. The blade. may
also be held as shown in' Figure 5 byzbendin-g a se'ctiomof metal 1 3 at the ends of the space between the straps '11 and 12 outward, and
then when the knife is in place forcingit againstthe upper surface of the ends of the knife. The clip-2; which extends downward from the point 10, may be made as shown or may be of anysuitable shape or design;
It will be understood that changes maybe made-in the construction without departing from the-spirit of'the invention, one ofwhich I changes may be in the shape or design of the casing 1, another may be in the use of'other means for holding the knife" in the clip, an-
other may be in the use of other means for holding-theeraser', and still anothenmay be in the, use of other means for clipping the device and a pencilhel'd therein to the edge of a pocket or the like.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. In use the device may be provided as shown, and it will be observed that it may be located at the upper end of a pencil as shown in Figure 1 when the pencil is in use. and it may be removed and placed on the point end of the knife to sharpen the pencil.
pencil to protect the point when the pencil is not in use, as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 1.
When it is desired to sharpen a pencil the device may be removed, and the member 1 gripped in one hand with the pencil in the other so that the blade 3 may be used as a As the blade is sharpened at both edges it may be, drawn or forced across the pencilpoint in any suitable manner. It will also be noted that asthe blade is mounted between the straps 11 and 12 it is protected and there is very little possibility of anyone cutting themselves with it either while the device is in use or while it is being used as a clip.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a a 1. In a pencil sharpener and holder of the character described, a cylindrical portion adapted to form a handle and also to fit snugly over a pencil, a comparatively long 'clip extending from the said cylindrical portion, said clip having an inverted U shaped sectlon there1n and sald inverted U shaped section having alongitudinal slot therein, and a double edge knife blade positioned in the said slot and held in the ends of the said U shaped section.
2. In a pencil sharpener and holder of the I character described, a tubular member forming a handle and adapted to fit over a pencil, said tubular member having slots in the sides thereof for gripping purpose, a comparative- 'ly long clip extending from the said tubular member and having an inverted U shaped secv tion therein, said U shaped section having a longitudinal slot therein, and a double edge knife blade in the said U shaped section and located in the said slot with the edges of the said slot crimped over the edges of the said holder of the blade.
3. In a pencil sharpener and character described, a tubular -member, a clip extending from one end of the said, tubular member and having a'U shaped-portion therein, said U shaped portion having a longitudinal slot therein, and a double edge knife blade in the said U shaped portion positioned in the said slot and held at the ends of the said slot, said blade spaced a short distance from the closed end of the said U shaped portion. a
Inv testimony whereof he allixes his signature.
