'ttlliliTE HAROLD B. BARNES, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
COMBINED PENCIL-SHARPENER AND MANICURING DEVICE.'
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented am. is, isis.
Application filed October 30, 1909. Serial No. 525,518.
lie it known that I, HAROLD E. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Combined Pencil- Sl'iarpeners and Manicuring Devices, of which the following is a` specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined pencil Sharpeners and manicure devices, and the object is to provide a device adapted to utilize the blades of the varie-us types of safety razor, and it consists in a socket having a slotted side, the cone adapted to receive and guide the pencil to be sharpened, in connection with two plates, one of which extends tangentially from the cone, starting from the slot, and the other a removable clamping plate, the two being adapted to receive a thin blade between them and form a guard about the edges thereof, with means for retaining the blade in position between and within the confines of the edges of the plates, and means for removably securing the clamping plate in position.
My invent-ion further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
in the accompanying' drawings: Figure l is a view from one side; Fig.4 Q, is a View from one edge; and Fig. 8 from one end of the preferred form of device; Fig. l is a view with the blade and clamping plate removed; Fig. 5 is a transverse section through one of the studs and through the blade; and lFig. 6 is a section through the mani- -curing portion.
in the preferred construction, 1 indicates a cone-shaped socket, the interior bore of which is designed to conform in pitch to the end of the pencil when sharpened. A base plate 2 extends tangentially from the socket, and a slet 3 extends lengthwise the cone at the juncture of the cone and plate, this slot having two main functions, one as a space for the cutting edge of the blade, and the other to permit the ready escape of the shavings from the pencil being sharpened. At the larger end of the socket the slotI 3 is very narrow and the metal of the base forms a guard for the blade as at a, so that the portion of the blade at this point is protected and not exposed to wear due to the sharpening of the pencil. The inner face of the plate may be Hat or curved, in the drawings it is shown flat, and in the form illustrated the plate has a centrally located internally screw-threaded orifice 4; and is provided on either side of the orifice 4 with studs 5, 5. These studs enter the holes 6, 6 of the blade 7. The studs are suiiiciently less in diameter than the holes to admit of the blade being adjusted toward the pencil socket a limited distance to ccm-- pensate for wear and sharpening.
A clamping plate 8 is adapted to tit the base plate 2 and the two receive the blade between them, and for this purpose, the clamping plate is provided with recesses 9, 9, to receive the ends of the studs, thus assisting in centering the clamping plate, and it has a central orifice l0 adapted to register' with the threaded orifice 4 in the base plate, so that the screw ll passing through the two orifices and the central orifice of the blade, is turned into the threads to hold the parts securely together'. The size of the base and clamping plates is sufficient so that they protrude beyond the outer edge of the blade to form a guard, whereas the length may just correspond to the blade, if desired.
Beveled notches l2, l2 are formed in the outer edges of the base and clamping` plates, so as to register with each other, their purpose being to expose a limited area of the outer edge of the blade, so that this portion may be used for manicuring purposes. The outer edge of the clamping plate is preferably beveled throughout its length, although not necessarily, and its outer surface is knurled in the form of a tile for filing the rough edge of the nails. it will be observed that these notches l2, 1Q, are approximately the same distance from the central orifice tas the portion a. is. There is a reason for this` which is that the portion of the blade which comes opposite the part a of the base plate is not touched by the peneil and consequently does not become v-Jorn, so it is sharp and ready for use in manicuring when the blade is reversed, if a twoedged blade, as is contemplated by the invention.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that a provision is made for utilizing to goed advantage an otherwise waste product. namely, razor blades having two cutting edges, while at the same time taking advantage of a superior quality of steel whieh will hold the sharp cutting edge for a more or less indefinite period. Again, it will be observed that in a blade of the type mentioned, in which both edges are sharp, both edges may be utilized in a device of this character, as specified, one for pencil sharpening, and one for manicuring.
My invention applies equally well to other types of safety razor blades as previously set forth, and it is obvious with very slight modifications might be so adapted.
More or less slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described, in addition to those specified, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but:
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
l. The combination with two plates, of a blade held between said plates, the relative width of plates and blade being such that when one edge of the blade is exposed, the other is guarded and protected, the plates having correspondingly located beveled notches at one end in position to expose a small portion only of one edge of th-e blade for manicuring purposes, one of said plates extending over a portion of the exposed cutting edge of the blade for preventing the guarded portion from being dulled, and said guarded po-rtion of the blade adapted to be exposed at the notches of the plates when the blade is reversed, and means adjacent the opposite and exposed edge of the blade for holding and guiding the pencil which thatI edge of the blade is intended to sharpen.
2. The combination with two plates, of a reversible blade held between said plates, the relative width of plates and blade being such that when one edge of the blade is exposed the other is guarded and protected, the plates having correspondingly located beveled notches at one end in position to expose a small portion of one edge of the blade for manicuring purposes, an extension formed on one of the plates which extends over a portion of the exposed cutting edge of the blade, and a' socket mounted upon said plate and lying adjacent to the exposed edge of the blade for holding and guiding' a pencil which that edge o-f the blade is intended to sharpen, the portion of said blade guarded by the extension of one of the plates adapted to be exposed at the notches of the plates when the blade is reversed.
3. rlhe combination with two plates, of a reversible blade held between said plates, the relative width of plates and blade being such that when one edge of the blade is exposed the other is guarded and protected, the plates having correspondingly located beveled notches at one end in position to expose a small portion of one edge of the blade for manicuring purposes, and a slot-ted socket mounted upon one of the plates and lying adjacent to the exposed edge of the blade for holding` and guiding a pencil which that edge of the blade is intended to sharpen, said socket having one end of the slot closed for forming a guard for a portion of the cutting edge of the exposed blade, said guarded port-ion of the blade adapted to be exposed at the notches of the plates when the blade is reversed.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
