UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. REDMAN, OF NEXVARK, NEXV JERSEY.
PENClL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,448, dated June 2, 1891.
Application filed January 29, 1891. Serial No. 379,508. (Ne model.)
To all whom it may concernz Be it known that I, OHARLEs H. REDMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have in'vented certain new and useful Inprovernents in Pencil-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying d rawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is to provide a device of greater convenience and to enable the pencil to be slarpened with greater t'acility and ease; and it consists in the improved pencil` sharpener and in the arrangenents and combinations of parts, substantally as will be hereinatter set for-th, and finally enbodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts'in each of the figures, Figure 1 is a plan of the device and showing the pencil about Fig. 2 is a section taken on line nc, and Fig. 3 a section taken on line y.
In said drawings, a indicates a netal casting, of which d is 'a finger-piece, a a flat shank, b a conical sharpening-head, the aXial center of which is at rightangles to the longitudinal center of the shank and fingerpiece, and c a cutter-seat in the longitudinal line of the shan'k, but on opposite sides of the conical head in which the pencil is inserted when being sharpened.
g indicates a blade arranged on the seat and having its cutting-edge exten'd to a slot g' in the conical head, so as tocut and sharpen the pencil h when inserted and turned in said head. The blade is held on said seat by a setscrew e', which allows 'of an adjustment of the blade with reference to the slot, and also allows of a renoval ot' the blade for sharpening.
f indicates a flat file for sharpening the lead, soldered on the shank, the latter being recessed, as shown, to receive the same. A
projecting stop c extends transversely across the shank to protect the fingers of the operator fron the lead when filing the pencil to a point..
By holding the sharpener by the fingerpiece in the position shown in Fig. l the wooden part of the pencil is first sharpened by the cutter, and then the lead, which is not allowed to engage the blade and dnll the same, is filed to a point on the file of the shank. The flat shank interposed between the lingerpiece and the conical head provides a bearing for the flat file and enables the latter to be placed so that the cutting orlead-sharpening chisel-edges will lie parallel with the axial center of the conical head. By this Construction the person sharpening will not have to change the angle of the pencil when changing from the wood-sharpening to the lead-sharpening Operations, as in cases where the file is arranged directly on the side of the conical head.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination, with the finger-piece, fiat shank, and conical head having a slot and cutter, of a file arranged on said flat shank, the cutting-edges of which are parallel with the aXial center of the said conical head, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, a fiat shank having a finger-piece at one end and a conical cutterhead at the other, disposed with its axial center at right angles to the said shank, and a file arranged on said shank, substantially as set forth. e i
3. In combination, a shank having a file on the face thereof, a finger-piece at one end thereof, a stop or ridge forned between the said file and finger-piece, and a cutter-head having a slot and blade arranged at the other end of said shank, substantially as set forth.
In testinony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of January, 1891. 4
CHARLES H. REDMAN.
