COMBINATION PENCIL SHABPENER AN D POCKET CLIP.
Application filed November 12, 1921. Serial No. 514,551.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEAMAN S. IIARVE'Y, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterbury, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pencil Sharpeners and Pocket Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pencil-Sharpeners and more particularly to an improved form of combination pencil-sharpener and pocketclip, formed from a single piece of sheet metal.
One object of the invention is to produce a combination pencil-sharpener and pocketclip which may be cheaply manufactured by stamping and bending, and without the use of complicated machinery or tools.
A further object is to provide a device of this nature in which the clip may be rapidly and easily attached to, and detached from, the edge of the pocket, and which may also be readily removed from the pencil when it is desired to sharpen the latter.
A further object is to provide a device of this nature having-a detachable sharpening element, adapted to be removed at will for regrinding the cutting edge thereof when it has become dulled through use.
A still further object is to provide a combination pencil-sharpener and pocket-clip of the above nature, which will be simple, strong, durable, and attractive in use.
With these and other objects in view there are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, several forms in whichthe invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
Fig. 1 represents a top view of a preferred form of the device, showing it clamped in position on a pencil.
.Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the device shown in Fig. 1, illustrating, by dotted lines, the relative location of the pencil.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the flat blank, as stamped from sheet me-tal,'and from which the combination sharpener and clip is later to be formed by bending.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional side view of the device shown as it' appears with a pencil inserted therein for sharpening.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional side view of the device, detached from the pencil.
Figs. 6 to 9 are longitudinal sectional side views, with the pencil removed, similar to the view in Fig. 5, of four modified forms in which the invention may also be embodied. Referring now to the drawings, 'in which like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout-the several views, the
first form of combinaton pencil-sharpener and pocket-clip is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, and as shown comprises the cylindrical metal tube 10, which may be made from any suitable material but which is preferably constructed of spring metal such as steel or ward end, the blank is terminated by the oval-shaped portion 16 having tangent edges 17 connected with the sides 13. a
The clip-opening 11, referred to above, is substantially U-shaped, having two curved slots 18 and a narrow base section 19. Em-
braced by the U-shaped clip-opening 11 is the clip 20, the shank of which is madewide at its rear portion 21, in order to increase the gripping power of the clip upon the pocket.
To provide a cutting edge for the device, the forward part 22 of the sharpening-aperture is bevelled to a knife edge, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the point of, the bevel being at the inner surface of the tube.- The cutting edge 22 is preferably formed of I hard durable material; for example, if the tube 10 is constructed of soft steel, the cutting edge 22 may be subjected to case-hardening to produce a durable-cutting surface or may be hardened by any other suitable heat-treatment. The sides 23 and the rear 2-1 of the sharpening-aperture 12 are preferably substantially parallel to the sides 13 and the rear 14 of the blank, being connected to each other by the curved sections 25, as shown in Fig. 3.
In order to produce the completed device, the stamped-out blank is preferably bent around suitable forms, not shown, into a substantially cylindrical tube. This tube is preferably made smaller in diameter than the pencil it is to enclose, so that in use the resiliency of the metal will cause the tube to clamp upon the pencil and prevent relative slippa e therebetween.
Interme iate between the clip-opening l1 and-the sharpening-aperture 12, a bridge portion 26 is provided. This bridge portion 26 serves not only to strengthen the device and thus prevent it from getting out of shape, but also increases the clamplng force of the clip on the pencil, and further reduces the danger of slippage.
When it is desired to sharpen the pencil, it is merely necessary to'remove it from the clip and to introduce the point into the sharpenin -aperture 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. he conical point portion 27, is ad uSted to the proper angle for sharpening, and the wood is then shaved off to the desired extent, the chips falling outside of the tube as shown. To replace the pencil in the combination sharpener and clip, after being sharpened, it is preferably pushed forward from the rear 14 until the point has emerged sufiiciently beyond the front 16.
In order to prevent the sharp knife edge 22 from cutting into the pencil during this replacing operation, the forward portion 16 may be bent slightly upward so as to allow the cutting edge 22 to clear the pencil surface. Various other means may be employed for achieving this same purpose within the scope of this invention, and three of these alternative constructions are disclosed in Figs. 6 to 8.
n Fig. 6 a combination sharpener and clip is dlsclosed, which is similar to the clip shown in Figs. 1 to 5, with the exception of a slight depression 28, formed in the tube in front of the knife edge. This depression 28 will ride over the pencil-point when the latter is being inserted and will keep the pencil surface entirely clear of the knife edge at all times.
ig. 7. discloses a device similar to that in Fig. 6, but in this embodiment the tube 10 in front of the sharpening-aperture is bent downwardly into the form of a lip 29, which will also cause the pencil to be depressed, during its insertion, sufficiently to avoid contact with the knife edge.
The combination sharpener and clip disclosed in Fig. 8 is identical with that in F ig. 6, with the exception that in this in-- stance, the depressed portion is at 30 in the eeneoe bridge 26, instead of being imfront of the sharpening-aperture.
In Fig. 9 a composite form of device is shown. in which the sharpening element is made separate and detachable from the tube, within which it is adapted to be inserted or telescoped. This sharpening element 32, which is referably made tubular, and which is providgd with an annular groove 32, is arranged to snap into engagement with the annular swaged-in-ring 31 of the tube 33. One advantage of this construction is that the main'part of the device may be made of cheap soft metal such as brass, while the amount of expensive hardened metal for the cutting element is reduced to the minimum. By replacing the sharpening inserts 33, from time to time, it will be possible to use this modified form of combination pencilsharpener and pocket-clip for an unlimited time. While it is preferred to secure the sharpening insert 33, detachably in the annular swaged ring 31, it is to be understood that if desired, the insert may be permanently secured thereto, as by welding, soldering, or riveting. In this case, however, it will not be possible to remove the sharpening insert, but it may be readily re-ground without detaching it.
While there have been disclosed in this specification several forms in which this invention may be embodied, it is 'to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that. the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms Without departing from its spirit; in short, the invention includes all the modifications coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
A blank to be used to form a tubular combination pencil sharpener and pocket clip, comprising an integral sheet of strip iron, said sheet having a pair of separated cut-out portions, a clip tongue extending into one of said cut-out portions, and the other outout portion having one edge sharpened to form a knife edge.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature to this specification.
LEAMAN S. HARVEY.
