Be it known that l, CLEMENT CLnvnLAND, a citizen or the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Sharpeners, of which the followingl is a specification.
My present invention relates to that class of pencil Sharpeners which usually have a substantially conical form and are provided with a longitudinally disposed knife-edge and an adjoining chip-space, and which sharpeners'being of small dimensions are convenient for carrying in the pocket, my present invention being in part an improve ment on the pencil Sharpener described in my copending application Serial No; 303,- 473, (renewal) filed June 11th, 1919.
An object of my present invention is to furnish such an improved pencil` Sharpener in which the `sevenal details shall be so organized that the entire Sharpener may be manufactured at aA relatively low cost.
A further object is to furnish a highly effective pencil Sharpener arranged for first reducing' the wood'o`r lead-encasingV portion ot' the pencil, and Jfor next sharpening or pointing the lead by a separate operation, thus effecting the sharpening of the pencil by ,a two-member process.

The sides or edges of the blank B are rolled or pressed together by suitable means into the tubular cone C, the plane-edge f and the knife-edge e assuming, when the cone is viewed from the greater end thereof as on the line 10-10 Fig. 2, in the directioiiof the arrow, the positions shown in Fig. l0, that. is, the knife-edge e lies slightly interiorly of the plane-edge f. The separating member D, is of the shape indicated in the drawings, that is, it is a reversely curved member, when viewed from the side as in Fig.Y l, having a somewhat curved end CZ and an end (Z2, of greater curvature than the end ci", the purpose of which is hereinafter stated. The separating member D is provided with arib or fin d3, Figs. 7, 8 and 9, which is intended to engage or be inserted in the recess g in the plane-edge fiof the cone C, and to engage the interior surface of said plane-edge.

When the separating member D is iii the above described position in theJ cone C, the end Z2 of greater curvature than the end d forms with the adjacent portion of the kiiife-edge e, a socket or means for receiving therein the lead-end of the pencil E for sharpening or pointing the lead by means of the cutting-edge c of the knife-edge c, this socket /c being of substantially cone shape due to the curvature of the knife-edge and the tapering of the cone C and the curvature of the eiid d2 of the separating member substantially as indicated in Figs. It will be understood, of course, that in practice the exact shape, proportions and position of the point socket of said member D should be made iii accordance with the requirements in any particular case as regards the shape, or particular conical formation, of pencil point which may be desired. An advantage of this forni of expanding or separating member is, that while it provides for sharpening or pointing the lead of the that cuts the wood or lead-eiicasing portion of the pencil, and also acts as a means for separating the knife-edge and plane-edge of the cone, it is simple in construction and can be easily and cheaply made.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
l. A pencil Sharpener comprising a split tubular cone for receiving the lead pencil therein, the split edge portions of the cone lproviding a binding spring for retaining the means for positioning iii the tubular cone.

A pencil sliarpeiier comprising a split pencil by the saine cutting-edge tubular coney for receiving the lead pencil` therein, the spilt edgeiportions of the cone providing a plane edge and a knife edge, and means for positioning the plane edge and knife edge for co-action therebetween for cutting the encased end ofthe lead pencil by the knifcledge, said means forL positioning the knife edge forming an opening at the mouth of the tubular cone for inserting therein the unencased lead of the pencil for pointing saidflead by the knife edge.

A pencil sharpeiier comprising an eX- pansively resilient tubular cone for receiving the lead pencil therein provided with a plane-edge having a recess therein and provided with a knife-edge for cutting the leadencasing'pcrtion of the pencil, a separating member provided with curved ends and provided with means for engaging said recess between the blank and edge, one of said ends when said member is in engagement with said recess being in engagement with the exterior 'surface of said plane -edge and the other of said ends being in engagement with the interior surface of said knife-edge for pressing the knife-edge outwardly, and means for guiding the lead pencil inthe tubular cone for cutting the lead-encasing portion thereof.

A, pencil sharpener comprising an eX- pansively resilient tubular cone for receiving the lead pencil therein provided with a plane-edge having a recess therein and provided with a knife-edge for cutting the lead-eiicasing portion of the pencil, a separating member provided with curved ends and provided with means for engaging said recess, one of said ends `when said member is in engagement with said recess being in engagement with the exterior surface of said plane-edge, and the other of said ends being in engagement Awith the interior surface of said knife-edge for pressing the knife-edge outwardly, and means for` guiding the lead pencil in the tubular cone for cutting the lead-encasing portion thereof; said outwardly pressing end and said knife-edge when said member is in engagement with saidrecess providing a socket for receiving the lead-end of the pencil for pointing the leadend by said knife-edge.

A. pencil sharpener comprising an eX- 'pansively resilient Vtubular cone "forwreceiving the lead pencil therein provided with a plane-edge having a straight face and having a recess therein and provided with a knife-edge having a cutting-edge for cutting the lead-encasing portion of the pencil, a separating member provided with curved ends and provided with a rib for engaging said recess and the interior surface of said plane-edge, one of said curved ends when said rib is in engagement with said recess and the interior surface of said plane-edge kbeing inV engagement with the exterior surface of the plane-edge and a first face of the other of Vsaid curved ends being in engagement with said straight face of theplaneedge and a second face thereof being in engagement with the interior surface of said yknife-edge for pressing the same outwardly and a third face thereof being in engagement with said cutting-edge as a stop-face for said cutting-edge, and guide-springs in the tubular cone for the lead pencil.

A pencil sharpener comprising an expansively resilient tubular cone for receiving the lead pencil therein provided with a plane-edge having a straight face and having a recess therein and provided with a knife-edge having a cutting-edge for cutting the lead-encasing portion of the pencil, a separating member provided with curved ends and provided with a rib for engaging said recess and the interior surface of said plane-edge, one of said curved ends when said rib is in engagement with said recess and the interior surface of said plane-edge being in engagement with the exterior surface of said plane-edge, and a first face of the other of said curved ends being in engagement with said straight face of the plane-edge and a second face thereof being in engagement with the interior surface of said knife-edge for pressing` the same outwardly and a third face thereof being in engagement with said cutting-edge as a stopface for said cutting-edge, and guide-springs in the tubular cone for the lead pencil; said outwardly pressing face and said knife-edge when said rib is in engagement `with said recess and the interior surface of said planeedge providing a socket for receiving the leadV of the pencil for pointing the lead by said cutting-edge. A pencil Sharpener comprising an expansively resilient tubular cone for receiving the lead pencil therein provided with a Vplane-edge having a straight face and having a recess therein and'provided with a knife-edge having a cutting-edge for cutting the lead-encasing portion of the pencil, a separating member provided with reversely curved ends and provided with a rib for engaging said recess and the interior surface of said plane-edge, one of said curved ends when said rib is in engagement with said recess and the interior surface of said planeedge being in engagement with theV exterior -surface of said plane-edge, and a first face of the other of said curved ends being in engagement with said straight face of the plane-edge and a second face thereof being in engagement with the interior surface of lsaidknife-edge for-pressing the Same outwardly and a third face thereof being in enf gagement with said cutting-edge as stopface for said cutting-edge, and guide-springs in the tubular cone for the lead pencil, said guide-springs being integral with the tubular cone.

A pencil Sharpener comprising an expansively resilient tubular cone for receiving the lead pencil therein provided with a plane-edge having a straight face and having a recess therein and provided with a knife-edge having a cutting-edge for cutting the lead-encasing portion of the pencil, a separating member provided with reversely curved ends and provided with a rib for engaging said recess and the interior surface of said plane-edge, one of said curved ends when said rib .is in engagement with said recess and the interior surface of said plane-edge being in engagement with the exteriorsurface of said plane-edge, and a first face of the other of said curved ends being in engagement with said straight face of the plane-edge and a second face thereof being in engagement with the interior surface of said knife-edge for pressing the same outwardly and a third face thereof being in engagement with said cutting-edge as a stop-face for said cutting-edge. and guidesprings in the tubular cone for the lead pencil, said guide-springs being integral with the tubular cone; said outwardly pressing face and said knife-edge when said rib is in engagement with said recess and the interior -surface of said plane-edge providing a socliet for receiving the lead-end of the pencil for pointing the lead-end by said cuttingedge.

A pencil Sharpener comprising a resilient split cone, the split edge portions thereof providing a plane-edge and a cutting-edge, said cone being formed for said Cutting-edge to have'a position within the circle of its proper cutting position, and a cone-expanding member interlocked with said edge and provided with faces for locating said cutting-edge in cutting position.

A pencil Sharpener comprising a resilient split cone, the split edge portions thereof providing a plane-edge and a cutting-edge, said cone being initially formed for said cutting-edge to have a position within the ciicle of its proper cutting position` and a cone-expanding member inter-locked with said edge and provided with faces for locating said cutting-edge inv proper cutting position.

A pencil Sharpener comprising a resilient split cone, the split edge portions thereof providing a plane-edge and a cut'- ting-edge, said cone being formed for said cutting-edge to have a cutting position within the cone circle, and a cone-expa n ding member separable from the cone interlocked with said edge and provided with faces for locating said cutting-edge in normal cutting position.

A. pencil Sharpener blank of resilient metal of truncated segment of a circle shape, one edge of said segment being provided with a straight face having a recess therein adjacent to the periphery of the segment, and the other edge thereof being a knife edge having a cutting edge thereon, and the blank being provided with cuttings therethrough having rounded ends and parallel sides, the cuttings at the ends of the sides thereof opposite to said rounded ends being connected to the blank, for forming cooperating guide-springe.
