CHARLES EDWIN LEE, or YQRK,-N. Y.
PENCIL-romaine.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWIN LEE,
' a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattam city, county, and State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Pointers, of which the following is a specification.
Many pencil pointers have been invented that have been the subject of an application for Letters Patent and all of these devices work with a more or less high degree of elliciency. Certain of them however haveobjectionable features that I am endeavo'ring to overcome it will therefore be found that in my device the length of point may be regulated at will and the angle of the wood and lead may also be changed to suit individual tastes or requirements.
I may produce the long point familiar to artists and particularly useful in shading, or I may produce the spade point common to draftsmen, or I may produce the standard point or any modification thereof, and I may or may not cut away the lead as is found necessary and desirable in soft lead and pencils.
Other features and the detail of construction will be fully set forth as the specification progresses.
The following is what I consider the best means of carrying out this invention.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows in perspective my complete device. Fig. 2 is a central horizontal section. Fig. 3 shows in plan the body member of my device.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures where they appear.
The body or larger portion of my device is the plate shown in, Fig. 2. It is oblong in plane and has a portion 1, dropped below the general plane and upon this, dropped portion it is myintention to secure the bladeQ. To center the blade upon the dropped por tion, I provide lugs 3 and 4- formed integral with the dropped portion and upturned to a certain limited extent to guide the blade at' its respective sides. ,The front edge of the blade or a certain portion thereof rests upon the shoulder 5 caused by forcing downward this dropped portion and a transverse rib produced by turning sharply upward the extreme end of this dropped portion 1, and indicated by the reference character 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

serves to retain the blade in its operable po sition even against the pressure that it Will be subjected to during its operation.
A longitudinal slot 7 is produced in the body member and extends well into the droppedportion thereof. The function of thisslot will be described later. F or ease in operation I have provided an extended plane surface 8 which serves as a handle or for a rest and grip for the fingers while the device is in use. This plane surface may be made even more useful by being caused to receive from suitable type or dies advertising matter of any nature. 1 I
I have so far described the means for guiding the blade and holding it against the pressure to which it will be subjected during its operation, but it is necessary that the blade shall also be held firmly down so that it will lie flat upon the depressedportion as shown in Fig. 2. This I accomplish by means of a clamp arranged over the blade, and the adjacent end of the body member. This clamp has a long projecting side 9 which rests upon the blade, a short downward extension 10 which passes over the rib 6 of thebody member, and a second inturned projection 11 which impinges upon the under side of the dropped or depressed portion of the blade holder. I have arranged the angle of the part 11 so that it will serve together with an inclined wall 12 of the slot 7 to produce an efficient guide the functions of which will be later described.
It will be seen from this construction that the blade 2 may be easily removed and other blades substituted, as to remove the blade it is only necessary to slide the clamp mem ber longitudinally upon the lug 6, thus removing the clamp after which the blade may be lifted from its position.
The operations of my device will no doubt appear obvious from the foregoing description of the construction but I will however briefly describe it so that the functions of.
certain parts may be more readily understood A sharp blade being placed upon the dropped portion 1 with its sharpened edge resting upon and adjacent to the shoulder 5, its sides held between the lugs 3 and a and its back edge resting firmly against the rib 6, the clamp member is placed in position with its longest projecting side 9 resting upon the uppermost face of the blade. The point of a pencil or the end that "it is desired to sharpen is passed through the slot 7 and a backward draw against the knife blade will cut away the necessary portion of the wood and lead of the pencil. A series of pulls or cutting strokes of either pencil or sharpener will reduce the point of the pencil to the desired size and shape. From the construction 1t will be seen that this device nor the blade thereof will not" clog with the chips removed nor will/it inflict injury to the operator.
lriodifications may be made within the scope oi the appended claims without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of this invention.
Having carefullyand fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent is p 1. A pencil pointer having a body member, a portion of which is dropped below the general plane, a shoulder between said body member and said dropped portion, lugs I iorined integral with said dropped portion, a blade retained between said lugs and said shoulder and a spring member projecting over tio-n r securing said knife in its operable position for the purpose set forth.
2. A pencil pointer having a body, a portion of which is dropped out of the general plane, a shoulder formed between said dropped portion andsaid body, a rib at one end of said dropped portion, a blade between said ,rib and said shoulder, and a spring member for retaining said bladein position ash rein set forth. a
