Description
B. KUMAGAL ?ENCFL SHARPENERl APPLcAToN HLED JULY 23, 1911.

o BUvtuenoY KUMAGAI, orzsEA'rTLE, WASHINGTON.
PENCI-LfSI-IARPENEBL To all whom it may'concern:
Be it known that I, BN'I'ARO KMAGAI, a
subject of the Emperor ofk Japan, residing at Seattle, in the county of King andState of VVashington, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements-in Pencil-ilharp-V eners, of which-f the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pencil sharpeners f and the like, and'has for-its primary object the provision of a device of a simplified-and economical construction wherein the abrading knife is easily removed 'and replaced;V
With the above and other objects in view, to be referred to as my description progresses, my invention resides in the features of Construction, arrangements, and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a frontelevation of a memorandum pad holder embodying the principal features of my invention, parts being broken away. F ig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with portions broken away. Fig. 3 is a fragnientary rear elevation thereof showing the knife element in a reverse position from that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end elevation thereof showing a pad in position.,
F ig. 5 is a transverse Section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view 'of one form of a knife element employed in my device. Fig. 7 is a vertical elevation of a pencil point shield embodying the principal features of my invention, parts being broken away. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 9 is a horzontal section taken on line 9-9 of F ig. 7.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, 1 indicates the hollow conical body of the pencil sharpener 10 which may be integral or otherwise rigidly secured, as by solder, to the base and-back Section of a memorandum pad holder 2 preferably at or near one end thereof.
This memorandum padholder 2 being of a well-known typewith the exception of a few minor structural changes, has the usual base 20 provided along its forward edge with teeth 201 and having an integral back section 21 to which a jaw member 22 is pivoted by a pintle 23. Said jaw member 22 overlies base 20 and is yieldingly pressed toward said base by suitable springs 24 and Specification of Letters Patent.

having on its forward or freeedge, teethL 221 arranged inV o-pposingrrelation to -teetlr .201 of base 20 and adapted to firmly holdV ar pad 25, as shown in Fig. 4.
In the present constructiom-I have shown the hollow conical body 1 integral with baseV 20 and back section A21`and have-provided at onev end of said back Section a longitudinal slot V3, the latter communicatingwith the interior ofthe conical body l-and theexterior face of the back section 21 thereby perniitting the discharge of the cuttings 'when a 'pencil is being sharpened.
` Guideways 40 are also provided in said back section for the reception of a knife element 4, said guideways being in vertical alinement with Slot 3 and below same. The knife 4 is preferably U-shaped and has four cutting edges 42, 421 thereby furnish-ing the maximum efficiency and greatly increasing the utility of my device.
When the knife 4 is in its normal position, as shown in F ig's. 1, 2, 4 and 5, cutting edge 421 of said knife is adapted to'be in the path of the pencil, to be sharpened, while theremaining cutting edges are protected in the guideways 40 and lip 43, the latter being an integral extension of b-ack section 21. VVhen, however, the knife element 4 is in the position shown in F ig. 3, in order to facilitate the insertion of the knife in guideways 40 I provide a longitudinal depression 30 in the back Section 21, said depression extending from the slot 3 to a point near the center of the back section, said depression being of ample height, length and depth to facilitate the insertio-n of said knife.
A further feature of my devi-ce is the enlarged openingll at the smaller end of the hollow conical body 1 to thereby facilitate the discharge of refuse such as shavings or broken points, the latter being pushed through the smaller end instead of being extracted through the large end, as is now done.
InV the form shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, I have shown my device as applied to a shield 5, as is commonly used to protect pencil Venting the accidental removal of said shield,V
furnish means to secure the same to the wall V of the pocket. V
A guide fiange 54 is integrally connected by 'a rib 55 to the conical body portion 50, thereby furnishing guideways 56 for a knife 6 said knife being similar in shape to the knife 4, ashereinabove described, with the exception that the knife 6 is provided with longitudin-al Central Slots 60 in its legs thereof, the object of said Slots being to allow the knife to be disposed astride Vof rib 55 irrespective of the direction in which the knife is inserted, as will be clearly understood.
To facilitate the insertion of the knife 6 in an upward direction, at the lower end of gudewaysr 56 the straight portion 51 of shield 5 is cut out at 511.
Copies ot this patent maybe obtained for Having thuos described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent'of'the United States, is-- 1. In an article of manufacture, a U-shaped lmife having cutting edges Von the opposite sides of each of its two arms.
2. In a pencil sharpener, in combination,V
- a casing, a flange on said casing having guideways disposed on each face thereof, a U-shaped cutting knife adaptedto be -posi tioned in said guideways, and means carried by said casing to guide the article to be sharpened. o V
In testimony whereof I aflix my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
BUNTAno KUMAGAI.
