WALTER. A. BARROWS, or BELVIDERE, ILL'I voI's, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF To JOSEPH E. TABOR, 0F BEL'V'IDER'E, ILLINOIS.
PENCIL sHAnrENER AND HOLDER.
Applicationfiled March 24, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER A. BARROWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belvidere, in the county of Boone and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Sharpeners and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
One of the primary objects of this invention is to provide a pencil sharpener and holder adapted to be attached to a garmentof a person, for instance to the pocket portion of a vest, for the purpose of carrying one or more pencils in the holder and for permitting the pencils to be sharpened by use of the sharpening device associated with the article.
Another object of 'my invention is to give an article of this character, such features of construction as will permit the article to be manufactured very easily and at a lowcost.
Another object is to provide the pencil sharpener and holder with means for detachably connecting the article to a garment of a person, whereby the article may be easily detached at any time, it being desirable in one instance, to remove the article when sharpening a pencil.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view. Fig. 2 is a front face elevation in which a portion of the sharpener is broken away. Fig. 3 is a rear face elevation in which some portions are broken away. Fig. 4 is a section on dotted line I) b Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section on dotted line a a Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a section on dotted line 0 c Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a section on dotted line 03 d Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a plan-view showing a modified fastening means. Fig. 9 is a rear face elevation of the modified fastening means.
The main plate 1 has its edges 2 curved,
and its center portion 3 is recessed, and from.
its upper center portion extends a projection 4. The lower center portion of the main plate 1 is formed into the semi-conical projection 5 having its pointed portion roughened or serrated as shown at 6 Figs. 6 and 7.
The main plate 1 has a lengthwise slot 7, adjacent to which is located a knife 8 resting against the hooked sections 9 formed from the main plate. A set-screw 10 passes through a slot 11 in the main plate and enters a screw-threaded hole in the knife, and by means of which the knife can be adjusted in a lengthwise direction and securely Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No; 616,747.
clamped to the main plate. The edge 12of the knife is tapered, in order that in adustlng the knife in its lengthwise direction it will also be moved bodily transversely in order to vary the bevel of the out given to the pencil.
To the main plate is secured a fastening means comprising a bail 13 which is pivotally connected to the main plate by the eyes 14 formed from the main plate encircling the bail. To this bail is pivotally connected a strap 15 bent to conform to the bail when in the position shown at Fig. 5. An open mg 16 is formed through the strap 15 and recelves the projection 4. This strap has a tongue 17 extending at right angles thereto when it is in its closed position.
At Figs. 8 and 9 is shown a safety pin 18 attached to the main plate which forms a modified means of attaching the sharpener and holder to the garment of the user.
To the main plate 1 is attached a plate formed with the two end loops 19 and a center loop 20, by the punched portions 21 entering openings in the main plate. The two end loops 20 in connection with the main plate form receptacles for lead pencils 22, and the center loop 21 in connection with the main plate forms a guide and holder for the pencil while being sharpened.
In sharpening a pencil, the pencil is placed-in the receptacle formed by the loop 20 and main plate and rotated in contact with the knife which will reduce the wood and reduce the lead to a point. The serrations will impart a fine point to the lead without breaking it. When the instrument is not in use it is placed within the vest pocket and the tongue 17 will impinge the fabric between it and the main plate.
When the safety pin is employed, the attachment can be attached to any portion of the garment of the user.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a pencil sharpener, the combination with a main plate having. an upset substantially conical portion, of a secondary plate secured to the main plate and having a curved portion forming a socket, the end of said curved portion being located substantially in line with the conical portion, and a knife carried by one of the plates and coacting with the socket.
2. In a pencil sharpener, the combination with a main plate having a conical upset Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
portion forming the point of a pencil-1e ceiving pocket, said main plate being also provided with a longitudinal slot, of a secondary plate secured on opposite sides of 1 the slot to the main plate and being curved and tapered to form the remainder of the socket, the smaller end of the second plate extending into the conical upset portion of the main plate and a knife secured to the lnain plate and extending into the slot 10 thereof.
In testnnony whereof I have hereunto set my hand 1n presence of two subscrlbing Gopics of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. G.
