Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.l
Application led March 4, 1914. Serial No. 822,451.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that l, GDENA M. GAREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of li/lassachusetts, have invented new and useful improvements in Thread-Removing Implements, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide an implement for use in removing the threads from material and which is particularly adapted for drawing out basting threads or machine stitchings.
rlhe invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a simple and etlective device which in shape and design is preferably somewhat like a pair of scissors but which has no cutting power and which is adapted for gripping the ends of threads, such as basting threads, machine stitchings or the threads in drawn work, which are to be removed from the material upon its completion.
ln the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the implement showing the same open; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevation showing the implement in use, parts being broken away to disclose the underlying structure; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through one of the lingers of the implement.
Referring more particularly to the views, l provide a plurality of similar members 10 and 1l, each preferably including an apertured handle or finger grip 12 and a forwardly projecting linger 13, with the said lingers being pointed at their forward ends and preferably having dull edges so that they will not cut. The members 10 and 11 are pivoted together at substantially their medial portions by a suitable transverse pin 14.
Formed with the Enger 13 on the member' 10 adjacent its forward pointed end is a plate l5 which is bent upon the finger as shown to provide a socket 16 into which is adapted to be received an end of a thread 17. When the implement is held in the hand with two lingers of the user passing through the apertured handles 12 in the same manner as a pair of scissors are used, and an end of the thread 17 is received in the socket 16, the implement is adapted to be closed in the same manner as a pair of scissors are operated so that a portion of the inner dull edge of the member l1 will extend into the socket to rigidly grip the end of the thread 17 therein, thus securely gripping the thread in the socket so that upon pulling uponthe implement the thread can be removed from the material into which it has been sewed or basted.
As mentioned heretofore, my device is not adapted for use in cutting but simply for removing threads and the like from materials, as in drawn work, or in removing basting threads from garments and the like, and it will be understood that the object is simply to grip the thread and pull the same from the material in the same manner as the lingers are ordinarily employed to do this work, but which, particularly in small work, cannot readily grip the ends of threads which are very short. If desirable, the free edge of the plate 15 forming the socket 16, and which is indicated by the numeral 18, can be sharpened so that when the thread has been pulled out to the desired length, the same can be cut by the sharpened edge of the socket 16 upon turning the implement transversely to its longitudinal axis.
Having thus described my invention, I claim.
ln a thread removing implement, the combination with a plurality of similar pivotally connected members having their inner forward edges blunt, of a socket on one of the members and adapted to receive an end of the thread therein, whereby the thread can be engaged by the other member when the members are relatively closed to securely grip the thread in the socket, and a cutting edge formed on the socket, by sharpening the free longitudinal edge thereof, said edge lying adjacent to the inner edge of the socket carrying member whereby the thread can be cut while said thread is gripped by said members by passing said thread over the said cutting edge.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
