To all whom t may concern:

`Be it known that I, HARRY SMIT, citin zen of Holland, Europe, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain "new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification.`

Scissors as ordinarily constructed are provided with a single set of linger pieces or eyes thereby adapting such implement for convenient use with one hand only.

'Ihe present invention has for its object to provide scissors which may be used with equal ease and efficiency with either hand. This is effected by providing the members or blades of the scissors with two sets of eyes or finger pieces, one set of eyes being adapted for the digits of one hand and the other set of eyes conforming to the digits of the other hand.

A further purpose of the invention is the provision of scissors each member or bladel of which is provided with eyes or finger Ipieces which are oppositely beveled so that the scissors may 'be used effectively with either hand without causing any inconven` ience or discomfort.

A further purpose of the invention is the provision of scissors the members of which are provided with eyes or finger pieces at dierent points in their length and having an opposite arrangement.

The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.

Referring tothe drawings hereto attached Figures l and 2 are obverse and reverse views respectively of a pair of scissors embodying the invention.

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the scissors showing the parts 0n a smaller scale and having portions of the handles broken away.

Fig. i is a sectional detail on the line 4-41 of Fig. 3.

Fig. 5 is a sectional detail on the line of Fig. 3.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.

The scissors comprise blades or members l and 2 which are pivotally connected in any well known manner. In accordance with this invention the handles of the blades are provided with two sets of eyes or finger pieces which are adapted to the different hands so that the scissors may be used effectively by either hand without causing any discomfort or inconvenience. One set of eyes or finger pieces is beveled upon one side and theV remaining set of eyes or finger pieces is beveled on the opposite sides so as to conform to the hand of the person. The eyes or finger piece may have any relative disposition, the essential feature being to have the different sets of eyes or finger pieces oppositely beveled so that one set will conform with one hand and the other set fit the opposite hand, whereby the scissors may be used with the same efliciency and comfort by either the right or the left hand.

The blade or member l is provided with two eyes or finger pieces 1a and 11 the same being located at different points on the length of the handle and upon opposite sides thereof. The blade or member 2 is similarly provided with two eyes or finger pieces 2iL and 2b disposed at different points in the length of the handle and upon opposite sides thereof. The eyes or finger pieces 1a and 2a are located at the extremities of' the respective blades or members 1 and 2. The eyes or finger pieces 1b and 2b are disposed a short distance from the extremities of the respective blades or members 1 and 2. The

eyes 1tl and 2a match and are beveled or 'l conformed to the digits of one hand. The eyes 1b and 2b match and are beveled to conform to the digits of the opposite hand.

The blades or members are pivotally connected by means of afasteningin any well known manner. One of the blades has a recess 4: formed in its inner face and a projection 5 upon its inner side. The recess 4c and projection 5 are disposed equidistant from the pivot fastening 3. The remaining blade is formed upon its inner face with a like recess and projection. The recess of one blade receives the projection of the companion blade. The matching recesses and projections assist materially in the proper movements of the blade when the scissors are in operation.

`The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the prei'erred, or approved, iorm of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions7 et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope or' the appended claims.

The blades are sharpened on both edges and have a limited movement about the pivot 3.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In combination, a pair of members pivotally connected intermediate their ends and each comprising a blade portion and a handle portion, both edges of the blades being sharpened to constitute two sets of cutting edges and the handle portions being pro vided with two pairs of eyes or linger pieces, one pair of which is positioned to receive the thumb and foreiinger of the right hand when one set of cutting edges is in use and the other pair of which is positioned to reeeive the thumb and forefinger of the left hand when the other set of cutting edges is in use.

2. In combination, a pair of members pivotally connected intermediate their ends and each comprising a blade portion and a handle portion, both edges of the blades being sharpened to constitute two sets of cutting edges and the handle portions being provided with two pairs of eyes or nger pieces located at dii'erent points in the length thereof, the eyes of one pair being suitably beveled upon one side to receive the thumb and forefinger of one hand when one set of cutting edges is in use and the eyes of the other pair being suitably beveled upon the opposite side to receive the thumb and foreiinger of the other hand when the other set of cutting edges is in use.
