anmntoc Qmos DEaN BENNETT UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS DEAN BENNETT, OF INDEPENDENCE, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO ARTHUR O. BASKET, OF INDEPENDENCE, COLORADO.
TOILET ARTICLE;
Specificatlon ot Letters Patent.
Application filed September 1, 1915. Serial No. 48,484.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Amos DEAN BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in toilet articles or accessories, and relates particularly to a device for use in bobbing childrens hair.
The invention has for its primary object a sim lo and efficient construction of device of this character, the arts of which may be very cheagly manu actured and readily assembled an easily adjusted when required for use so that it will not be necessary to secure the services of a skilled barber to trim or bob the hair as desired.
The invention has for a further object an improved device of this kind in which the arts ma not only be adjusted as required, but may e separated at one end so that the comb and band which together comprise the main arts of the device, can be eas ly cleaned and the device at all times maintained-in a sanitary condition. And the invention also aims to generally im rove devices of this class so as to render t em more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a pers ective view of my device, showing an app ication thereof; Fig. 2 is a similar new of the device with the parts adjusted to angular relation; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 3--8 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following descri tion and designated in all of the views 0 the accompanyin drawing by like reference characters.
improved device for use in bobbing child rens hair com rises a curved comb 1 and a preferably so id band 2 which is also curved in the same contour or she e as the-- comb, both of these parts bein 0 any desired size both in length, widt and thickness, said band being of a width greater than the width of the comb, said comb and band being formed of any desired substances or materials that will be found suitable for the purpose, said comb l and band 2 both possessmg a certain degree of inherent resiliency.
At one end, the comb l and band 2 are pivotally connected together by a rivet 3 or the like extending therethrough, and at the other end, they are pivotally connected together by means of a set screw 4 embodying a preferably smooth head 5 which lies against the inner side or face of the comb 1, and a shank which extends out through an opening in the comb and is received in and accommodated by a lon itudinally disposed slot 6 formed in the a joining end of the overlyin band 2, a thumb nut 7 which is preferab y knurled or milled, as shown, screwing on the outer extremity of the set screw.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my device for use in bobbing hair will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, the comb is drawn into position over the back of the head with the teeth thereof upwardly or forwardly directed and the band 2 is then placed firmly against the comb, and secured in lace by the set screw or thumb fastener, making an oven and true line to cut by. Thus, it \Vlll be seen and un derstood that, by the use of this device, the hair can be very easily bobbed and in a very expeditious manner and that, by the use of the straight line or edge formed by the band 2, a very accurate cut or trimming can be performed and practically by any one, without the services of a skilled barber.
It is also to be noticed that the longitudinal edges of the band 2 are substantially straight and unobstructed so that the same will effectively serve as a guide during the cutting operation.
While the accompanvin drawing illustrates what I believe to be t 10 preferred embodirnent of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is As a new article of manufacture, a device for use in bobbing hair comprising a curved comb and an overlying band permanently and pivotally connected at one of its ends to the comb adjacent an end of the comb, said band havin its longitudinal edges vsubstantially straig 1t and unobstructed and being of a width greater than the width of-the comb, the ivotal connection between the comb and and bein at substantially the transverse centers of t e comb and band, the
Copies 0! this patent may be obtained (or opposite end of by the opposite end of the band at its transverse center being provided with a longitudinal slot, and a set screw dis osed through the the com at its transverse center and directed through the slot of the band whereby the band may be maintained fixed relative to the comb after said band has 'been lon "tudinally adjusted as provided for 0t therein.
In testimony1 whereof I hereunto affix my signature in t e presence of two witnesses.
AMOS DEAN BENNETT.
