This invention relates to knives, and more particularly to a safety paring knife having means for detachably receiving one-half of a split safety razor blade which is held flat against the guard member of the knife by means of a resilient clamping arm pivoted to said guard.

One object of the present invention is to provide a safety culinary knife of the above nature in which the guard has a sharp curved side edge for cutting vegetables and fruits.

A further object is to provide a culinary knife of the above nature on which the pivoted clamping arm is formed with a resilient bent end section which serves to hold the blade tightly in operating position when the end of said arm is flexed under a catch member on said guard.

A further object is to provide a culinary knife of the above nature in which said guard is provided 'with a pair of upstanding pins which serve as stop members to insure the swinging of said arm into its proper clamping position.

A further object of the above invention is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, ornamental in appearance, and very eflicient and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.

It has been found from experience that the ideal cutting edge of a knife for use in the paring, peeling, scraping, and slicing of vegetables and fruits is provided by a safety razor blade. The ordinary safety razor blade, however, is so wide that it cannot be used in a narrow culinary knife, but the best results are obtained with one-half of a standard safety razor blade which has been split longitudinally, thus permitting the culinary knife to be relatively narrow and easy to operate.

Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral ill indicates a cylindrical handle preferably disposed in a horizontal position, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The handle I has a reduced neck surrounded by a ferrule H, and said handle also has an interior flat recess I la for receiving a laterally bent over rear end l3 of a uard member l2, said rear end [3 being securely imbedded in said recess and preferably secured therein, as by the use of cement. The guard member I2 is provided with a fiat main body section l3a from which extend a pair of upstanding pins l4, 15, adjacent a straight flat side edge [6 thereof. The edge of the guard member opposite from the pins l4, I5 is curled downwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, as indicated by the numeral H, and said edge I! is sharpened and extended forwardly beyond the body section |3a to provide a pointed V-shaped cutting extremity l8 which may be used for coring vegetables or fruits.

The flat side edge I6 of the guard member I2 is provided at its rear end with a raised inturned catch member [9 made integral with the body section l3a. The guard member I 2 is provided with a longitudinal slot 20 having a beveled edge 2|, which slot serves to permit the peelings and slicings cut from the fruit or vegetables by a split razor blade section 22 to pass through said slot 20. The slot 20 is preferably parallel to edge I! of the guard member l2.

In use, the razor blade section 22 is adapted to lie flat upon the body HM, and has a sharp edge 23 held tightly in spaced position with respect to the beveled edge 2| by means of a swinging clamping arm 24.

The clamping arm 24 is provided on its rear extremity with an upcurved resilient end 25 which is adapted to be flexed downwardly against the guard l2 and pushed under the catch l9 previously describedsaid catch thus serving to hold said clamping arm tightly in flat frictional engagement with the razor blade 22.

The clamping arm 24 is connected to the forward end of the guard by means of a pivot pin 26, preferably made in the form of a tubular rivet. The clamping arm 24 is also provided with a pair of side notches 21, 28 which are adapted to embrace the pins I4, I5 and thus hold said arm 24 in proper operating position when it is swung against said pins.

One advantage of the present invention is that the knife never needs to resharpened, as it is merely necessary to remove the safety razor blade section when it becomes dull and replace it with a new one.

While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and

3 that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within scope of the following claim.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:

In a culinary knife, a handle having a guard secured thereto, said guard being longitudinally straight and transversely curved and having an elongated slot formed therein parallel to the edge thereof, a detachable narrow razor blade member mounted on the convex side of said guard and having a sharp cutting edge aligned with said slot, a resilient clamping arm pivoted to the outer end of said guard at one end and upwardly concave at the opposite end, and means on said guard tightly in flat condition to clamp said razor blade member against said guard, a pair of upstanding stop pins being provided on the rear edge of said guard parallel with said slot, and said clamping arm having a pair of notches to embrace said upstanding stop pins.
