UNITED STATES JOHN D. CARUSO, OF
PATENT OFFICE;
HAIR CUTTER.
Application filed November 8, 1924. Serial No. 748,520.
My invention relates to .improvements in means for cutting hair, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, efficient and reliable device Which may be readily and conveniently used to cut or trim hair.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified which is drawn through the hair like a comb in performing the cutting operation..
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which either side thereof may be dis posed with safety in operative position neXt to the hair to convenient-lvcut or trim the same.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a devicel of the character specified in which the blade extends through and across the toothedl portion of the device to permit of the disposition of either side of n the device in operative positiomand to prevent thejdevice from cuttingthe user when theV device is disposedl in either of the operative positions thereof.
Further, said invention has .forv its object to provide a device of the character speci- Iied Which may be' employed to cut or trim either fine vor coarsev hair', irrespective of the length thereof. j,
Other objects will in part be obvious and inl part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objectsl and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in they combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims."
In the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is an elevation, lwith parts broken' away, showing one form of .device construct- `ed according to and embodying my said in- `Figure is an enlarged sectional view thereof on the' line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional View thereof on the line 3--3.of`F g. 1; and
Figure 4 is an elevation showing a modified form of the device.
-Referring to the drawings., the haircut ting or trimming device includes a hair engaging or combing member 10 of suitable length, having a base or shank portion 11 and suitable teeth 12 and 13 extending from said shank. Preferably. the teeth 12 are coarse and Widely spaced to permit of the same efficiently engaging coarse or thick hair. The teeth 13 are relatively fine and clo.,.ly spaced to permitV of the efficient engagement of said teeth 13 with relatively fine or thin hair. Figs. 2 and 3 indicate the relative Widths of the teeth 12 and 13 in planes transversely of the device.
The member 10 has a longitudinal recess or slot 14 therein which extends from the top edge of and through the shank l1 into the inner portions of the teeth 12, 13. The recess 14 also extends longitudinally of the member 10 from end to end thereof to permit of the insertion of the blade 15 endWise into the slot 14 throughl one of the open ends 14n' thereof. The open ended slot 14 in the member 10 extending from end to end of said member divides the same into opposing yieldable or resilient portions 11b, adapted to be stressed to firmly grip or clamp the blade 15 therebetween, said blade being coextensive in leiigth with said member 10.
The blade 15 is preferably inserted end- Wise into an end 14a of said slot 14 and forced inwardly. This method of inserting the blade 15 prevents injury to the cutting edge 16 thereof disposed between the shank 11 and the outer. ends of the teeth 12, 13.
The blade 415 extending through and i across the teeth 12, \13 is protected by the portions of said teeth 12, 13 at opposite sides of the blade 15, which form guards to prevent the user from being eut or injured when thedevice is used with one side or the plther in operative position to cut or trim the a1r. Y A The side portions 11b of the member 10 are maintained in engagement with blade 15 to clamp the same in position by 'the securing member 17, which is coextensive in' length with the member 10. The member 17 has a longitudinal Vrecess or slot 18 therein closed at one end 20 and open at the opposite end 20, adapted to receive the shank 11 which may be inserted endwise into the recess 18 through the open end-20a. The member 17 and the shank llrhave interlitting portions 19 to 'prevent the member 10 from being pulled out of the recess 18 through, the longitudinally open portionthereof. Then the member 10 is in position, one end thereof is engaged by the end'QO of the member 17 and the opposite end of the member 10 is engaged by a detent 21 to prevent the member l0 from being accidentally pulled outpendwise. The opposite walls 17b of the member 17 are resilient so that when the member 10 is disposed therebetween, said side walls 17 compress the portions 11b to maintain the same in gripping relation with the blade 15.
The memberlaalso provides a convenient portion adapted to be grasped by either hand in the use of the device.
As shown in Figs. 1 .and 4, the cutting edge 16, 16a is preferablyarranged so /that the distance between the same and the outer ends of the teeth, 12, 13 or-12a, 13a, varies alongv the device to permit of the use thereof for cutting or trimming either long or short hair, or either thick or fine hair. Preferably the said cutting edge 16, 16a and the line along which the outer ends of said teeth lie form an acute angle, or converge towards each other, from the end of the device having the coarse teeth 12, 12a, to the end of the device having the fine teeth 13, 13a. In Fig.
1 this convergence is obtained by roviding teeth 12,43 which are progressive y shorter towards the end of the device having the tine teeth 13, the blade 15 being of uniform "width throughout. Ind Fig. 4 the convergence .is obtained by providing teeth 12a, 13a
of uniform length, the blade 15 being progressively wider towards the end of the device having the fine teeth 13a. The 'member 10a with its shank 11 and the member 17"* are in other respects like the corresponding parts illustrated in Figs. 1,-to 3.
To use the device, the saine is dra-wn downwardly through the hair like a comb to cut or trim the rough and jagged hair to render the same even and smooth. Owing to the'disposition of the blade 15, 15 within the teeth 12, 13, or 12a, 13,'the device can be employed to trim different portions of the air. using one hand rithe other, depending on the position of the portion it is desired lto trim. The arm and hand used can be I held at aM comfortable, convenient "angle throughout the operation. Either side of the device may be disposed in operative position next'to the hair without the danger of cutting or injuring the user.
For cuttin or trimming long'or thick hair, the portion 12; 12 of the device may be employed. For cutting or trimming relatively short or thin hair, the portions 13,13l
of the device may be employed.
My said invention provides a device which permits of a person cutting or trimming his or her own hair without engaging the services of a barberand the same is of use to women especially for keeping bobbed hair in presentable condition.
Having thus described my said inventlon,
.what I claim and desire to secure by Letters` Patent is: I
