UNITED s'ra'ras HENRY IBOH, O1 CINCINNATI, OHIO.
HAIR-CUTTING DEVICE.
Application filed Kay 9,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY FROH, a citizen, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair cutting devices and has for an object the provision of a tool by means of which an unexperienced person may cut or trim either his own or anothers hair, in a neat and efficient manner and may so regulate the tool as to cut the hair to any desired length.
Another object is the provision of a hair cutting tool which is easy of adjustment to regulate the length to which the hair may be cut, the tool also being adapted to be reversed to provide difi'erent degrees of cutting.
Another object is the provision of a hair cutting tool in which the hair is passed through the teeth of a comb over a cutting edge, the arrangement being such as to cause the hair to pass through these teeth in an angular direction, to provide a shearing cut and thus insure proper operation of the tool.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hair cutting tool constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view looking at the opposite side of the tool.
Figure 3 is a view looking at the toothed edge of the tool.
Figure 4 is a similar view looking at the opposite edge of the tool.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional View.
Figure. 6 is a detail view of the blade holder.
Figure 7 is a longitudinal section taken approximately on a central line between the two rows of comb teeth and showing the blade holder and blade in position.
Figure 8 is a detail view of the blade.
Referring in detail to the drawings, whereinlike characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the casing of the tool which 1921. Serial N0. 468,074.
includes opposite side walls 11 and 12, which are spaced apart and connected near one longitudinal edge and each transverse edge to provide a pocket 13. Extending from the side walls 11 and 12, are comb teeth 14 and 15 respectively, the teeth 15 being shorter in length and relatively finer than the teeth 14. Both the teeth 14 and 15 have their ends beveled as shown at 16. p
The pocket 13 is designed to receive a cutting blade 17, which is preferably in the form of a safety razor blade, being provided with opposite cutting, edges 18 and spaced openings 19. Infact the blade shown is of the type used in a popular form of safety razor and the blades of this razor may be used with the present tool. The openings 19 in the cutting blades 17 are designed for the passage of bolts 20. These bolts also pass through elongated slots 21 provided in the walls 11 and 12 of the casing 10 and are provided with flattened heads 22, which bear against the outer surface of one of these walls. The openings 21 of the tool casing are spaced to conform to the space between the openings 19 of the cutting blade 17 so that the bolts may be passed through these openings and provided with thumb nuts 23 to hold the blades in proper adjusted position.
It is referred to use in connection with the tool a separate blade holder. This holder is formed of resilient sheet metal, which is bent to provide oppositely and outwardly flared walls 24, having spaced openings 25 therethrough for the reception of the bolts 20. The blade 17 is inserted in the flared mouth of the blade holder, whose inner end is provided with a cushioning. element 26, to prevent contact of the inner cutting edge of the blade with the adjacent portion of the holder. The outwardly flared edges of the holder engage the inner walls of the casing 10 and add to their resilient character and tightly engage the opposite faces of the cutting blade. The blade is further gripped by the'adjustment of the tive of their worn or sharpened away condition.
In the use of the tool the blade is set to its innermost position, that is, with its cutting edge as far as possible within the eas- The tool is then passed through the hair, with the teeth passing through and separating the hair, the direction of movement being from the neck upward around the sides of the head and back to the crown, until the hair is even. For this cutting operation, the tool is used with the coarse teeth next the scalp. The blade is then set to out the hair to the shorter or desired length, the direction of out being upward from the neck to the crown of the head and around the sides until the hair is all of the proper length. The tool is then passed through the hair at the front of the head, the blade being first set to provide the desired length. y providing the comb teeth in the manner shown, that is, by having the teeth u on one side of the blade even and upon the opposite side coarse, the hair is caused to pass through the comb in an angular direction and to engage the cutting edge in like manner. This provides a shearing operation, so that none of the hair passes through the comb uncut and thus, a ra ged and uneven effect is prevented.
Ti desired, the tool may be provided with a proper casin made of such size as to be readily earrie in the pocket so as to be at all times convenient for use.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed 1s:-
A hair cutting tool embodying a casing including spaced walls connected together adjacent one longitudinal edge and each transverse edge forming a pocket there between and each wall being provided with a pair of elongated slots, theslots of one wall being designed to align with the slots of the opposing wall, a plurality of teeth extending from the opposite longitudinal edge of each wall and having their free ends beveled, one wall carrying teeth shorter in length and relatively finer than the teeth of the opposing wall, a blade holder formed of resilient sheet metal and bent upon itself to provide 0 positely and outwardly flared walls, said ast mentioned walls being provided with aligned spaced openings, a cushioning element secured between the walls of said blade holder and adapted to en age both walls-adjacent the bent portion t erect, a blade arranged between said blade holder and. adapted to engage the cushioning element, a pair of bolts provided with'flattened heads and adapted to be inserted through the elongated slots of the casing and the openings of said blade holder, thumb nuts threadedly mounted on the ends of said bolts to adjustably secure said blade in the pocket of said casing through the medium of the blade holder for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENRY FROH.
