UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. HASSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION HAIR-Gil".ll".lIEB. AND SAFETY-RAZOR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, James A. HassoN,
. nation Hair-Cutters and Safety-Razors,- of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a combination hair cutter and safety razor, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of. this description which.
will permit a personto cut or trim his own hair and which may be converted into a safety razor b a 'sim le adjustment.
A further 0 ject of my inveition is to provide a positive adjustment for the two blades by which they will be securely held in place when adjusted, and may be easily removed for sharpening; g Y
With these ends in View, this inventlon consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to whichthis invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numeral to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in whicht Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the comb ele ment.
Fig. 4 is an end view thereof looking in the direction of the arrow in Fi 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail" face view 0% one of the cutting blades showing the adjusting notches therein, and,
Fig. 6 is an end view thereof.
In carrying out my invention as here emai bodied l utilize a comb member 1 having a shank 2 formed therewith to which it is secured in any suitable manner to the handle 3 here shown as by rivets 4c.
Specification of Letters Patent.
hiladelphia Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
v Application filed January 14., 1919, Serial No. 271,044.
one being placed upon one face of the comb member. while the other is placed against the opposite face of said, comb member and these blades have the notches 7 formed in the1r-ends,sa1d notches being adapted to enter into enga ement with the post 5 and thus'hol'd the b ades against displacement.
I have here shown three of these notches in each end of each plate which will permit the blades to be adjusted to three different positions upon the posts, but of course a greater number of notches may be provided so as to increase the range of adjustment of said blades.
7 is a housing or shield, the body portion of which is tubular in cross section having projecting therefrom extensions or wings 8 at a sufficient distance from each other to pass over the blades and comb member and hold the former snugly against the side of the comb member as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This shield is of such'dimensions that when it is passed over the end of the comb member,
the split edges 9 thereof willv pass beneath the posts while the top of the circle will come in contact with the upper edge of the comb member thus holding this shield in place.
From the foregoing description it'will be seen that the two blades may be adjusted to the desired position "upon the comb member and there held by passing the shield endwise over said blades, and when thus adjusted it is only necessary to draw the teeth of the comb through the hair of the head to effect a smooth regular cutting of the hair, and by increasing or decreasin the pressure against the head the hair wil be cut shorter or longer as may be required, thus it will be seen that a person may readily cut his own.
hair. When it is desired to use the device as a safety razor it is only necessary to ad ust the blades so that. the edges thereof will I come close to the ends of the comb teeth, and may then be used in the manner of an ordinarysafety razor wlth the same results.
One of the principal advantages of m pres- Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without de thereof whereby certain of said notches will engage said posts to adjustably position the blades, and a shield adapted to slide endwise over said blades and so engage said posts as to hold said shield in, position. i
2. In a device of the character described, a comb having a post projecting fromeach face thereof adjacent each end, two blades each having a series of notches in each end, certain of said notches engaging the posts in difierent adjustments, and a shield partially inclosing the comb-and blades in engagement with the posts to revent accidental displacement of the shield.
3. In a device of the character stated, a comb member,-two posts each located adjacent the ends of said comb member and projecting from both faces thereof, two blades having a series ofnotches in their ends, said notches adapted to engage the posts when the blades are placed upon the faces of the comb member for holding the blades in various adjustments, and a tubular shield having extensions for clamping the blades upon the faces of the comb member, the heels of said extensions adapted to engage the posts to prevent the crosswise displacement of theshield.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto afixed my signature. V-
. JAMES A. ASSON.
