WILLIAM EDMUND OREILLY, or IloNnoN, ENGLAND.
. I A SAFETY-RAZOR.
7 To all tu /tom it may concern:
Befit known that 1, WILLIAM EDMU'ND OREILLY, a subject ,of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of, which the following is a specification.
This 1nvent1on relates to improvements 1n I and relating to safety razors, and it. refers to razors of the. type in which a thin blade mounted in a guard is arranged transverselyof the line of the handle' The present invention has for its object to provide a razor of this type in which the holder and handle may be readily disconnected and the razor reduced'to such dimensions as will enable it to be readily carried safely in'the waistcoat pocket.
The invention, broadly stated, consists in constructing the handle of the razor hollow,
, and of such dimensions that it will "accommodate the guardwith the bladetherein, provision being made whereby,'when required for use, the said guard may be readily connected to the handle at a right-angle to the line thereof, A lid or cover is provided for one end or the side of the handle. I r
Various means of attachment may be employedfor connecting. the guard to the hall dle, for example spring members upon the guard, or the handle may be provided for this purpose, or the underside ofthe guard may be provided with one or more projections which 'may slidably engage suitable ways upon the handle or vice versa.
In order to permit ofithe ready adjustment of the blade with respect to the comblike edge of the. guard, the said blade is held by friction so that it may be readily slid toward or away from the said edge. The
teeth of the guard may, under some circum-' stances, instead of as 1s usual in razors of this In order that the invention may be the better understood,- drawings are appended in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the razor ready foruse. :Fig. 2 is a front view of the razor. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view. Fig. 4 is a back view of the guard. Referring to the accompanying drawings,
- specification of Letters Patent.
is approximately in contradistinction to of the case and preferably .thereof. A second channel 9 is provided by this means-the ready moval of the guard is permittedi The blade then forming the handle. type being directed away from the blade, be
toward the edge thereof. .By this sions as will enab in the waistcoat pocket, and which-at the a indicates the holder" or case for the guard and which case is provided with a lid or closure a 6 indicates the guard which, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, is formed of a single piece of metal the length of which the same as the length of v Patented Aug. 22, 19 16.

the'razor blade, indicated by w in F igs. 1 to 3.
The guard is cut away at c and has formed upon it at a} a series of teeth of more 'or less teeth usually provided upon a safety razor, are directedto- Ward the ed'geof the razor blade. The guard at its upper end is provided with an extension e which is turned backwardly and downwardly to engage a channel 7 formed A at the bottom upon the opposite face of the case 03, the purpose of which is to receive the lower edge of the part It formed by suitably turning or bending the metal which is cut away to form the aforesaid opening 0. The parts 0 and h slidably engage the channels .f and g and attachment and re- :0 previously referred to is adjustablylheld guard b and is bent or turned over at 2' until the body of said tongue lies parallel with the.
usual form but which teeth it will be noted, a
as clearly'shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4,- said extension at its lower end being designed along one face.
in position upon the guard by means-of the. tongue 2' which is formed integral with the quired the holder, and with it the blade, is
removed and placed in the handle,-
By means of the present invention I am enabled to produce a/ razor of such dimenlg, it to be readily carried same time may be rapidly assembled or dis-- connected when so desired. By arranging .the ,teeth of the. guard in the manner described, I ammoreover enabled not only to secure a'ni'cer adjustment of the bladewhereby the chances of cutting the skin is avoided i readily cleaned; Instead of the teeth of the guard being arranged in the manner shown and described I may under some circumstances employ a guard having teeth of orferred form of construction and arrange-f ment of the guard it will be understood that I do not desiretorlimitmyself to the same as I may makesuoh' changes in the said conhandle may 'struction and arrangement as may be found in practice to be necessary or desirable. The means of attachment ofthe guard to the also be'varied as maybe desired. ,Claims: I
' 1. In a razor 1n combination, a razora blade; a blade-holder, a handle comprising a'hollow body of rectangularxcross sectional outline closed at the upper end and adapted to contain the blade-holder? 'a removable closure .for the.lower end'of said hollow body-handle; said, handle having securing channels upon opposite sides adjacent the upper end; and projections upon the holder designed to slidingly and removably engage said channels; the-projection upon one side being lower than that uponflthe other, whereby theholder is inclined-with respect to the axial line of the handle.
2. In a razor in'combination, a razor-l K bladeyablade-holder; a handle comprising a hollow-body of rectangular cross sectional outline, closed at the upper end and adapted to contain the holder; a removable closure for the lower end of, said hollow-body-han posite sides adjacent the uppen end; and inturned extensions upon opposite sides of the holder'forming projections to engage the channels upon the opposite sides of the .holder, the projection upon one side being lower than that upon the other whereby the holder is inclinedwith respect to the longitudinal axis of the handle.
dle; such handle having channels upon pi In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in thepresence of the two under I signed witnesses.
