8 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures PATENTEDnuvza I972 sum 1 or 2 IN VE N TOR Roger L- Perry Attorney PATENTEDmvza I972 3.703.764 SHEET 2 OF 2 INVENTOR Roger L. Perry Afforney RAZOR BLADE ASSEMBLY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to safety razors and is directed more particularly to a razor blade assembly comprising blade means clamped between two supporting members.
2. Description of the Prior Art Many safety razors in use today include a head portion which comprises a platform for receiving a blade member, and a cap or pair of cap members for holding the blade member securely against the platform.
Recently, there have evolved razor head units having blade means and head means as one unit which may have a handle molded thereto or which may be adapted for connection to a separate handle means. For example, U. S. Pat. No. 3,488,764, issued Jan. 6, 1970 discloses blade means molded into a disposable unit which may constitute either a razor head or a complete razor.
SUMMARY OFTHE INVENTION An object of the present invention is to provide a razor head unit similar to that disclosed in the abovementioned patent, but in which the blade means is supported by a platform member and a cap member.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, a feature of the present invention is theprovision of a razor blade assembly including a platform member having ramp means for supporting razor blade means thereon, planar razor blade means disposed on the ramp means, and a cap member connccted in. rivot-like fashion to the platform member with the blade means disposed therebetween, the rivot means extending throughholes in the blade means. The platform and cap members are further provided with runner means adapted to slidably receive a complementarily shaped portion of a razor handle.
Theabove and other features of the invention, ineluding various novel details of construction and combinations of parts, will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims. It will be understood that the particular device embodying the invention is shown by way of illustration only and not as a limitation of the invention. The principles and features of this invention may be employed in various and numerous embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which is shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention from which its novel features and advantages will be apparent.
FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view of one form of razor assembly illustrative of an embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view;
FIG. 3 is a bottom plan view; and
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken along line IV-IV of FIG. 2
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the illustrative assembly includes a platform member 2, blade means 4, and a cap member 6.
The platform member 2 includes end walls 8, interconnected by a front wall 12 and a ramp 14. The ramp 14 includes an elongated recess 16 disposed centrally thereof and extending throughout the length of the ramp. The recess 16 of the ramp 14 is provided with a series of holes 18 for receiving cap member projection means, as will be described in detail below. The end walls 8, 10 extend forwardly, or to the right as viewed in FIGS. 1 and 4, and support a guard member 20 which extends the length of the platform member and is spaced from the front wall 12 and the platform No. 124,216, filed Mar. 15, 197l. The wall 24 may be provided with a notch 29 to facilitate positioning of the blade assembly on the razor handle (FIG. 3). Preferably, the entire platform member, including platform, walls and guard member comprise a unitary member molded of plastic material.
The blade means 4 comprises at least one planar blade member 30 having a cutting edge 32 and a series of holes 34 arranged complementarily with respect to the holes 18 of the platform member 2.
The cap member 6 includes end walls 40, 42, interconnected by a clamp portion 44. The clamp portion 44 includes a clamp surface 46 having an elongated recess 48 from which extend a series of pins 50. The pins 50 are arranged and dimensioned complementarily to the blade means holes 34 and the platform member holes 18. Extending from the clamp portion 44 is a depending wall 52 having on its free end an inwardly extending flange 54. The wall 52 and flange 54 form a groove 56 which is opposed to the abovedescribed groove 28 and which, in conjunction with the groove 28, is adapted to receive the runner means of the razor handle referred to above. Preferably, the cap member comprises a unitary member molded of plastic.
Referring primarily to FIG. 1, it will be seen that in assembly of the unit, the blade means 4 is placed upon the ramp 14 of the platform 2 with the blade means holes 34 in alignment with the platform holes 18. The cap member 6 is then placed upon the blade means with the pins 50 extending through the holes 34, 18, as shown in FIG. 4. The free ends 58 of the pins 50 are then expanded rivet-fashion (not shown) to lock the components together, whereby to permanently secure the blade means between the platform and cap members 2, 6. The blade assembly is then ready for connection to a handle, of the type above referred to, for shaving operations.
It is to be understood that the present invention is by no means limited to the particular construction herein disclosedand/or shown in the drawings, but also comprises any modifications or equivalents within the scope of the disclosure.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
