' C. A. FONTA-INE COMBINED COMBVAND HAI R CUTTER Filed Jan. 6, 1922 N (F g m j' N 1 k I v f Patented May 8, 1923.
rarer CHARLES ADOLPHE FONTAINE, OF PABISfFRANCE.
COMBINED COMB AND HAIR CUTTER Application filed January 6, 1922. Serial No. 527,414.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES AooLPHE- FONTAINE, a citizen of the French Republic, and resident of Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Combs and Hair Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvement: in combined combs and hair-cutters of the type comprising a comb on which is fitted a stationary cutting blade to enable even an unskilled person to cut his hair or beard himself to .the desired length without risk of hurting himself.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device of the type mentioned, having simple but efiicient means, whereby the cutting blade may be removably fixed to the comb.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved device of the kind described, having a slide which is removably held on the comb and adapted to receive either an ordinary safety razor blade or a profiled razor blade, having one cutting edge and a thicker opposite edge.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improveddevice of the kind described, wherein the comb has a guiding edge of substantially circular cross section for the reception of a correspondingly shaped yielding blade-carrier.
These and other objects of my invention are attained by the construction, arrangement and combination of parts, fully described and claimed hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, where-- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved comb and hair-cutter. V
Fig. 2 is a section on line AB of Fig. 1
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the blade carrying slide removed from the comb.
Fig. at is a section on line CD of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a front view of the metal plate serving to secure the cutting blade to the slide.
Fig. 6 is a front view showing an alternative form of slide.
Fig. 7 is a cross section on line E-F of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 6.
Fig. 9 is a front elevation of a modified form of slide, and
Fig. 10 is an edge view thereof. Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1-5, 1 indicates the comb of special construction, provided on each side face with a shallow longitudinal groove 2. Shdably arranged on said comb is a slide 3, 4, made of a single piece and comprising a body portion 3 which yieldingly engages the longitudinal grooves 2 in the comb 1, and an outwardly projecting cheek 4 provided with three projections 6 at its lower part, for the reception of a usual safety razor blade having opposite cutting edges. Said razor blade is secured to the check 4 by means of a metal plate 5 (Fig. 5), provided with three openings in longitudinal line and two of which are made of ellipsoidal form with somewhat straight upper and lower rims, whilst the central opening is shaped to form one member of a bayonet joint.
The construction thus far described enables the razor blade to be rigidly fixed on the slide 3, 4:, at the same time enabling the latter to slide longitudinally in both grooves 2 in the comb. The razor blade fixed to the slide 3 on one side of the comb enables the hair and beard to drop in accordance with the passage of the blade therethrough. The
in use the apparatus will be simply passed through the hair or beard to be cut. The latter will be cut to a more or less greater length by having the slide secured overthe coarse or the fine teeth of the comb.
Referring now to Figs. 6, 7 and 8, of the I drawings, showing a slide designed to carry a razor blade with a single cuttin edge, it
will be seen that the slide is provided with two lateral guide-members 7, between which the razor blade may be received. Engaged into each guide-member 7 is a small set-screw 8, by means of which the razor blade will be adjusted and held in position. Secured to the side of each guide-member 7 by means of a rivet 9 is a spring 10, the upper end of which is bent substantially at right angles and engages the back of the razor blade 11 to hold the same in place.
It will be understood that the form of the blade-guide-members 7 and of the holdin springs 10 ma be modified as desired,an that other equlvalent devices may be substituted for the set screws 8 without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In the constructions above described the comb has a guiding rim of substantially square cross section, engaged by a correspondingly shaped portion of the blade caring slide.
In the modification shown in Figs. 9 and 10 the slide 3', 4: is designed to receive either an ordinary safety razor blade with two cutting edges or a razor blade with a single cutting edge, said blades being secured to said slide as already described.
The upper portion 3 of this modified slide is bent on an arc of a circle as shown whereby a springy action is attained so that the slide will grip the back of a comb.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination of a comb formed with longitudinal grooves on opposite sides thereof, a member slidabl mounted on the comb having a body portlon formed to extend around the back of the comb and fit in said grooves, and a plate portion extending from the body portion at one side, offset from the comb at the upper end and engaging the teeth thereof near the lower ends, and means for securing a razor blade to the outer side of the plate.
2. The combination of a comb formed with a longitudinal shouldered groove on each side, a holding member having a body ortion fitting over the back of the comb and formed with inwardly extending offset portions slidably engaging in said grooves, the
ofi'sets thereof engaging the shouldered portions of the grooves, said member also having a plate portion extending downwardly on one side of the comb and engaging the teeth thereof near the lower ends, and means for securing a blade to said plate portion having a cutting edge projecting below the lower edge of said plate portion, whereby the body portion having the offsets engaging the shouldered portions of the comb will hold the plate portion against movement away from the comb.
3. The combination of a comb formed with a longitudinal shouldered groove on each side, a holding member having a body portion fitting over the back of the comb and formed with inwardly extending offset portions slidably engaging in said grooves, the ofisets thereof engaging the shouldered portions of the grooves, said member also having a plate portion extending downwardly from the body portion at one side of the comb and having an offset at the upper end connecting it with the body portion, said plate portion engaging the teeth of the comb near the lower ends so that the plate is inclined with respect to the comb, and means for securing a blade on the outer face thereof with a cutting edge projecting below the plate portion, whereby the offset of the body portion engaging the shoulders formed in the comb will kee the lower edge of the plate in contact wlth the teeth of the comb and the inclination of the late to the comb will render the cutting e ge of the blade more effective.
CHARLES ADOLPHE FONTAINE.
