Description

Sept; 21, 19.37. I c. 3 MENSCH 2,093,921
PAR ING KNIFE WITNESS ATTORN EYS Patented Sept. 21, 1937 UNITED-- STATES PATENT oFFicB 1v Claim.
This invention relates to paring knives and its general object is to provide a knife that can utilize discarded blades, preferably of the double edged type, in that the knife includes a holder for detachably clamping a blade for use in a manner whereby the blade provides the cutting edges for the knife.
A further object is to provide a paring knife of the character set forth, which includes a guard for one of the cutting edges to limit the depth of its cut, and the blade can be applied and removed in an easy and expeditious manner, yet casual removal or displacement thereof is practically impossible.
Another object is to provide a paring knife of the character set forth, that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely eflicient in operation, use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, refer- .ence will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the paring knife which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the body section of the blade holder, showing the arrangement 35 of a blade with respect thereto in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a similar view of the other section of the holder.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the knife.
Figure 5 is a. sectional view taken approximately on line 55 of Figure l. Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that the blade holder includes what may be termed a body section i that is provided with 45 a flat face having lugs 2 formed thereon to receive a blade 3 which is preferably of the double edged .type, and while new blades can be used with my knife, I preferably use discarded blades or ones which are too dull for shaving.
Cooperating with the body section I is a companion section 8 which is rounded transversely to provide a concavity 5 extending longitudinally thereof to form a chamber for the lugs 2, as best shown in Figure 5, it being obvious that the sec- 55 tions are disposed in face to face relation and against the blade for clamping the latter between the same in a manner which will be presently described. I
The body section outwardly beyond the lugs thereof and preferably parallel therewith, as shown in Figure 2, is provided with an opening 6 which is formed by slitting the metal and pressing the material outwardly from the slit, as shown in Figure 4 to provide an abutment 1 for a tongue 8 on the outer end of the section 4, the tongue being received in the opening, and by that construction, it will be seen that the outer end portions of the sections are connected. Each of the sections i and 4 have formed therewith shanks having flat inner faces, and the shank 9 of the section I is longer than the shank ID of the section 4, in that the shank 9 terminates in an exteriorly threaded stud Ii tobe threadediy secured within the bore l2 of a handle I3 for the knife, the bore receiving both of the shanks disposed in face to face relation' The opposite side edges of the sections terminate flush with each otherand the opposite blade edge extends beyond the same to be used for cutting purposes, consequently it will be seen moving undesirable portions thereof, and the portion 18 is preferably sharpened.
From the above description and disclosure of the drawing, it will be obvious that a blade can be readily applied and removed with respect to the holder, merely by removing the handle from the shanks of the sections, which will allow the sections to be separated, but when-the handle is threaded in position for use, the sections which act in the capacity as jaws set up a viselike clamping action upon the blade, with the blade arranged to provide the cutting edgesfor the knife.
It is thought from the foregoing description tha the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided 1 shank for each section, a handle having a bore therein receiving the shanks for cooperation with the tongue, the abutment and the lugs for detachably securing the blade between the sections with the latter in clamping association therewith, one of said sections having a slot therein and extending longitudinally adjacent one side edge thereof for disposal of one cutting edge oi! the blade therethrough, the other cutting edge extending outwardly beyond the opposite side edges of the sections, the slotted section being reduced from adjacent to and toward its outer end to provide a substantially pointed outer portion therefor, and the slotted section being laterally and outwardly flared in rounded formation from the slot to provide guard means for the cutting edge that extends through the slot.
