UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. JOHNSTON, OF SOUTH BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM BARNEY AND ONE-HALF TO FRANK A. BOWMAN, BOTH OF NEW YORK, n. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ATTACHMENT FOR SCISSORS 0R SHEARS.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
To all whom 2'25 may concern Be it known that I, GHARLEs E. JOHN" s'roN,a citizen of the United States, residing at South Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Scissors or Shears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in scissors attachment and has particular application to a combination comb'and scissors structure for a bare bers use, or for use in cuttingones own hair.
In carrying out-the present invention it is my purpose to provide a combination comb and scissors which will be constructed in such manner as to enable the barber to out the hair with ease and facility, and wherein the combs will be detachably connected with the scissors so that the combs may be removed whenever it is desired to sharpen the blades of the scissors.
With the above recited objects in view and others of a similar nature, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a combination comb and scissors structure constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig.2 is a cross sectional view through the same.
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
Referring now to the drawing in detail 1 designates a pair of scissors of any desired or approved construction.
Suitably secured to the shank of the finger manipulated blade between the finger ring and the pivotal connection between the blade is a holder 2 having its opposite sides formed with clamping jaws 3. Disposed upon the outer sides'of the blades of the scissors are combs 4 and integral with the backs of the combs 4 are shanks 5. These shanks 5 extend into the jaws 3 and are thereby clamped in position at the side of the scissors. The
outer ends of the combs are connected together by means of a rivet 6 or other fastening device.
The teeth of the combs extend above the finger manipulated blade of the scissors so that in the operation of the scissors the hair will be brought into position to be cut by the blades of the scissors as the thumb operated blade is manipulated.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a combination comb and scissors structure wherein the combs may be readily and conveniently detached from the jaws carried by the blade shank so that the bladesmay be sharpened. Furthermore, it will be noted that owing to my combined comb and scissors structure, the barber may cut the hair with ease and facility. It will be understood that my invention is equally applicable to scissors and shears provided with thumb-operated blades.
I claim 1. In combination with a pair of scissors,
a pair of resilient elements arranged at op posite sides of one of the blades below the pivot thereof, combs disposed at either side of said blade, means for connecting said combs together, and shanks forming a continuation of the back of said combs, and
'ried by each comb and removably fitted be tween said blades and the resilient walls of the socket, whereby the combs are frictionally maintained in proper position with respect to the blade.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES E. JOHNSTON.
