INVENTOR ATTORNEY United States, Patent ACCESSORIES FOR HAIR CLIPPER Henry D. Hall, Havelock, N.C.
Application July 15, 1957, Serial No. 671,347
6 Claims. (Cl. 30-201) This invention is an improved clipping implement with an adjustable accessory thereon, for shearing and trimming the hair of the human head.
An important object of this invention is to provide an attachment for a hair clipper that can be quickly mounted in operative position on the clipper, and easily adjusted to cut a persons hair in the manner desired.
Another object is to provide an accessory for a hair clipper which requires little or no skill for manipulation, so that even an inexperienced attendant can employ it with excellent results.
A further object is to provide an accessory for hair clipper that is yieldable so that it can be adjusted to various positions relative to the cutting blades of the clipper.
An additional object is to provide a hair clipper with an accessory that is adjustably mounted on the body of the clipper for greater convenience in operation.
The nature of the improvement and other objects and advantages of my invention are set forth in detail herein, and the novel characteristics are defined in the appended claims. On the drawings some preferred embodiments of the implement are illustrated, but changes in minor respects may of course be made without materially altering or deviating from the general design in which the invention is contained.
On said drawings:
Figure l is a side view of a hair clipper for a persons head with the accessory thereon, with the comb engaging the hair at the end.
Figure 2 is a top view of the implement and its accessory.
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic view of part of a different form of my accessory.
Figures 4 and 5 present details of the device shown in Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is detail of a modification, shown on a slightly enlarged scale.
The clipper is of the well known construction of such implements used in many tonsorial parlors, and has a body 1, with shearing elements 2 to cut the hair along its front edge, and the mechanism for operating the elements 2 housed inside the body. The accessory has the form of a frame or member 3, with two side arms 4 and at the rear a connecting cross piece 5. The frame has at one end of the arms 4 parallel longitudinal extensions 6, each terminating in upward bent end portion 7. The arms 4, crosspiece 5 and parts 6 may be the same plane, and the frame 3 is pivotally secured to the front of the body 1 by a clip 8 which has arms 9 with bearings 10 receiving the crosspiece 5. The clip is held fast on the implement by a screw 11, and the frame is pivotally attached to the clip 8 in the bearings 10. The crosspiece 5 has a projection 12 for the operators thumb to be held so that the frame 3 is always maintained in a desired adjusted position.
and cross each other, as shown in Figure 3.
2,882,595 Patented Apr. '21, 1959 "use The comb 13 is attached to the accessory by fitting the extremities 7 into clips 14 at the ends of the back or ridge of the comb. These ends and clips are long enough to hold the comb in rigid position. In use, the accessory supports the comb at the correct angle as shown in Figure l; and the extensions 6 are far enough apart so that the shear blades 2 at the front of the implement are within the space between these extensions. When the comb is run through the subjects hair, the ridge or base of the comb is below the shear blades but the teeth of the comb are above these blades, and when the implement is operated the hair is out long or short, as may be desired.
The frame 3 may be made of stiff, resilient wire so that when the comb is run through the hair the blades may be pushed more or less closely toward the subjects head. For clippers that have adjustable blades, the frame 3 may be shortened, by pressing the comb towards the clipper, or stretched out accordingly. If desired, the arms 4 can be resilient while the crosspiece 5 is made of a flexible length of wire soldered to the arms 4, and the adjustment of the frame to be longer or shorter can be eflected by bending crosspiece 5.
I can also adapt my implement to be fitted with a comb 15 (as shown in Figures 3 and 4) that comprises a section of about the same length filled with long and coarse teeth 16 and the remainder with finer teeth 17. Such a comb will have a groove 18 along one side of the ridge 19, and the extensions 6 will be connected by a crossbar 20 to fit into this groove. The full length of the comb will be about twice the width of the frame 3, and at the ends and in the middle of the face of the ridge having the groove 18, the ridge will have a notch 21 extending from the groove down and through the outer edge of the ridge. The bar 20 will be connected to the extensions 6 by bent up portions 22 and each extension will carry a clip 23 in front of the portions 22 to bear against the near face of the comb.
To attach the comb to the frame with one set of teeth adjacent the blades 2, the bar 20 is inserted into the groove 18. The bent up portions 22 then fit, one in a notch 21 at one end of the groove 18 in the comb, and the other in the notch 21 in the middle of the comb. When the comb is adjusted so that the other set of teeth are in line with the frame, the portion 22 that is in the middel notch 21 will fit into the notch 21 at the other end of the groove 18, and the opposite end of the bar will fit in the notch 21 at the center.
The comb will thus be firmly held at the proper angle in the frame 3, because the clips 23 will press against the comb, and maintain one end with its notch 21 in secure engagement with the portion 22 therein. The ends of the comb at the notches 21 may of course be reinforced and long enough to serve their purpose.
Figure 6 shows frame 3 with the extensions 6, each having two bent-up and bent-down portions 24. The space 25 between each pair of bent-up portions is wide enough for the back of a comb to fit snugly between them, and be held in place by these reversely bent portions, which will serve the same purpose as the clips 23 in Figure 5. The frame 3 can be so formed that the portions 24 will engage flatwise against both faces of the comb, and the portions 24 which will engage the front face of the comb will be connected by the bar 20. With this type of frame any comb can be utilized without a groove 18 therein, as shown in Figure 3.
Having described my invention, what I believe to be new is:
l. A hair clipping implement comprising a body having shearing elements, a member on said body, a comb shearing elements, a frame mounted onthe. body, said. frame having; an arm at each side, and a portion connecting the said arms being reversely bent from. side.v to side, arms at one. end,.a comb'attached: to the opposite ends of said arms, a clip engaging said portion and adjustably uniting; the frame to the body with the arms. extending towards said elements, said portion having. a
projection for manipulating the frame to hold the comb close to said elements or separated therefrom.
3. The hair clipping implement according to claim 2, wherein each arm is bent inward of the frame and then outward between the. ends, said arms having parallel end portions engaging and holding the comb.
4. The hair clipping implement of claim 2, with. said opposite ends. of the arms bent up and joined by across-- piece, said arms having upstanding clips adjacent said bentupendsJhe comb havinga longitudinal. groove. in. its.
base and notches in the ends of the base and between said ends to receive the cross piece and bentup ends of said arms.
5. The hair clipping implement, according to claim 2, wherein said arms have parallel extensions at said opposite ends, each extension being; reversely bent to form a pair of clips separated by a space for receiving the ridge of a comb.
6. The hair clipping implement,. according to claim 2, wherein said arms have parallel extensions at said opposite end'szthereofisaid extensions being reversely bent to form clips separated by a space for receiving the ridge of a comb; said extensions being joined by a crosspiece at their outer ends.
