No. 466.407. I Patented Jan. 5, 1892.

FRANK v. GLINKIE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
CLIPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ?atent No. 466,407, dated January 5, 1892.
' Application filed May 25, 1891. Serial No. 394,019- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, FRANK V. GLINKIE, of
Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clippers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention has for its objects to provide clippers or a hand cutting device for use in trimming grass or other material, which shall be simple and cheap in construction and efficient and handy in operation; and to these ends it consists in certain novelties of construction and, combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter described, and the novel features pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan View of the clippers constructed in accordance with my invention, showing in dotted lines the manner of grasping and using it; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same; Fig. 3,2 longitudinal sectional View; Fig. 4, a cross-sectional view on the line w or ofFig. 1; and Fig. 5 a cross-sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 1.
Similar reference-numerals indicate correresponding parts in the several figures.
My clippers are composed, generally,of two parts constructed, preferably, of steel, either formed up in dies'or cast, as may be desired, one part embodying ahand-piece 1, preferably having the rounded side flange 2,with the finger-grip 3 thereon, and at the forward end a series of fingers 4, tapering, as shown, and sharpened on theirouter sides, and just inside the ends of these fingers a depressed portion having a shoulder or flange 5 at the outer end, as in dotted lines, Fig. 1. The other part of the clippers has a movable blade or cutting portion 7 at its outer end, arranged to co-operate with the cutting-fingers 4 on the part 1 and provided with a rounded flange having a thumb-rest 8, and is pivoted at its lower end to a rivet 9 on the end of the part 1, as shown, a spring 10, secured to the latter, passing around The part 6, or at least the outer cutting-blade,
portion, is somewhat elastic, and the blade is arranged at a slightly different angle from the fingers 4, with which it co-operates, so that it bears on the outer portions of the latter when parallel with one of the said fingers; therefore its cutting-edge will engage the edge of each of the fingers when moved on the pivot and ride up the same, making a close joint and insuring the severing of anything between them with a shearing cut. \Vhile this is preferably accomplished by making the part or the blade springy, it will be noted that the spring 10 is so arranged that it will press the blades inclose contact, so that the arm might, if desired, be made of stiff material.
The manner of grasping and using my clipper will be readily apparent from the drawings, the operator holding the main part 1 with his fingers and actuating the blade with his thumb, and as the implement can be made any size desired the purposes for which it may be used are many-such as clipping grass, wool, hair, or any similar material.
I claim as my invention Clippers consisting of the two members pivoted together at one end, the portions of each nearest the pivot constituting a part of the handle, one member having the series of teeth or fingers and the other a single cuttingblade adapted to be moved across the edges of all of the said fingers, and a single spring secured to one member and bearing on the upper side of the other, operating not only to separate the parts on the pivot, but also to press the blade and fingers together, substantially as described.
FRANK V. GLINKIE. Witnesses;
FRED F. CHURCH, G. A. RoDA.
