Description
G. L. WEST.
ICE MITTEN.
APPLICATION man APR. 21, l9l8.

UNITE 'll GEORGE I1. WEST, OF ROCKPORT, MISSOURI.
ICE-MITTEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 6, 1918.
Application filed April 27, 1918. Serial No. 231,128.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen L. VVns'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockport, in the county of Atchison and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Ice-Mitten, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mitten for use in handling ice, one of its objects being to provide a device which can be attached readily to the hand and which, when in position, will enable the user to hold and carry ice without feeling the cold to an objectionable extent and without danger of loosening the grip upon the ice.
Another object is to provide a mitten of this character which is cheap to manufacture and can be worn comfortably.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mitten, the position of the hand relative thereto being indicated by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a palm plate one end of which is slightly reduced in width and bowed transversely, as shown at 2, there being upstanding ears 3 at the sides thereof.
A strap 4 is riveted or otherwise secured to said end portion of the plate and to the inner surfaces of the ears 3, the ends of the strap being adapted to be secured together by a buckle 5 or in any other desired manner.
Hingedly connected to the other end of the plate 1 is a finger plate 6 from the bottom surface of which are extended prongs 7. A linger strap 8 is secured to the top face of this linger plate and is adapted to receive the fingers of the hand of the user.
In using the device the strap d is secured around the wrist after the fingers have been inserted .into the loop or strap 8. The mitten can then be flexed sulliciently with the hand of the user to enable a strong grip to be obtained on a cake of ice, the prongs 7 biting thereinto as will be obvious. The plates will protect the hand from the cold that would be felt should the ice come into contact with the hand.
What is claimed is:-
An ice mitten including a palm plate reduced in width at the wrist end thereof, upstanding ears at said end and merging along curved lines into the said end of the plate, a wrist strap secured to and constituting a lining for the wrist end of the plate and the cars, a finger plate hinged to one end of the palm plate, prongs extending from the finger plate, and a finger receiving strap secured to the back of the finger plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto allixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. 'WEST.
WVitnesscs S. M. CLARKE, l. E. ()AvnNnnR.
