Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. CHoArn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relatesrin general to amusement devices and has more particular reference to devices of this character which consists of parts adapted to be inserted between the fingers of the hand of the operator to simulate a human face.

I am aware that prior to my invention attempt has been made to provide devices of this character, notably through the provision of separate members for the eyes and the nose, but when thus constructed such devices have been unsatisfactory by reason of the fact that it was found to be substantially impossible except inthe hands of the most experienced user to position the eyes accurately with respect to the nose and to retain them in position during the manipulation of the device. These devices possess the further disadvantage of relying wholly upon the pressure of the fingers between which these parts were positioned for retaining them in place.

It is a principal object of this invention to provide a device of the character described wherein all of the parts may be accurately held in place through the thumb which, as it does not press upon these parts themselves, may have freer movement for their control. This arrangement possesses a further advantage in that the average person has better control over independent movement of the thumb than of any of the fingers of the hand. In accordance with my invention it is proposed that the thumb shall perform an active function in retaining the eyes and nose in place.

A further object of this invention is the provision in such a device of a readily movable tongue member, also controllable by the thumb, and the provision also of material simulating hair.

An additional object of the invention is the provision of a device comprising these facial members which will be readily operated by the average person without particular instruction and without extensive experience.

`scribed which will produce a grotesque and expressive simulation of the human face, it being understood, however, that the device is capable of embodiment in parts adapted or the simulation of other than the human ace.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character composed of few and simple parts, so constructed and connected that they may not be easily lost or disarranged.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.

Un the drawing, Figure l is a front elevation of a human hand in which the parts embodying my invention are arranged to simulate a human face; Fig. 2 is a section through the same showing the internal arrangement of said parts; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the eye and nose part and the hair simulating material.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown on the drawing a human hand 4: in which the parts of the device are arranged to simulate a human face. The general effect is that produced in Fig. 1 and the particular arrangements and construction of the device of the parts will be seen by comparing Figs. 2 and 3. From these figures it will be noted that a main part, generally designated at 5, is provided. This part is composed of a sheet of metal or other suitable material having a relatively flat central or main portion 6 and three upwardly projecting portions 7 and 8. The portions 8 are bent downwardly and curved as indicated in Figs. Q and 3 to form the eye parts and these portions are suitably decorated to this end. The nose part is cut to proper shape and curved downwardly from a center forwardly as at 9 to provide the human nose. rIhe nose part, when this member is positioned, fits over the second knuckle from the end of the index linger with an eye upon each side. 'Ihe body 6 of thispart is cut away at its edges at l0 and these edges are slightly curved to permit it to fit accurately within the fingers.

Hair simulating material l1 is provided and this, in the present instance, consists of a wisp of wool, hair or other suitable material, embraced at its center by one end of a connection 12 which, as will be later described, extends between it and the member 6. The wisp of wool or hair extends outwardly at both ends, where it is loose and fluffy.

The connection 12, in the present instance, consists of a rubber band having one end extending through a suitable recess 18 in the rear of the member 6 and looped about the body ofthe band and the other end be-` ing similarly connected at 14 with the hair simulating material. The length of this band is such that it will cause the hair to rest upon the first finger of the hand carrying the device, where it may be pressed upon by theend of the thumb. Viewing Fig. 2 it will be noted that the thumb in pressing upon this is slightly lifted at the first joint so that a slight straightening movement of the thumb holds the parts inwtight relation and further movement of the thumb permits movement ofthe hair and a slight movement of the nose.

The tongue member, generally designated at 15, is a vsingle sheet of metal or other material reddened on its upper face and at the 'forward end. vThis member is adapted tobe positioned between 'the index and third finger of the hand with its end projecting. Inwardly of the reddened end it is curved upwardly at 16 to adjacent the thumb at 17, where it is bent to lie along the under vside of the thumb at 18. A band 19 encircles the part 18 and the thumb, this band being preferably of elastic or other suitable material. In Athe present instance, the band 19 is also a rubber band and is lfastened to the part 18 by spurs 20 which overlie the band. Downward movement of the thumb, when the parts vare'properly constructed and arranged, will cause the tongue to be projected from between 'the fingers as from a human mouth and upward movement will retract it. Side movement will cause it to wiggle. When the parts are constructed and this arranged, the effect is i'mprovedrby wrapping a handkerchief 22 about the hand and engaging it between the third and little finger.

It will be manifest from the foregoing that in thus constructing and arranging the parts, all of them are controlled by the thumb, andthe whole device lconsists of two general members or 'groups of members 'which facilitates materially their position and insures their accurate use. In making the connection 12 and the band 19 of'elastic material, the parts of the device laccommodate the device to hands of different sizes.

It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, constructionjand 'arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit `and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

1. An amusement device comprising a main part formed to simulate the nose and eyes of a face and adapted to fit between the fingers of a human hand, and means for holding said part in position.

2. An amusement device comprising a main part formed te simulate the nose and eyes of a face and adapted to fit between the fingers of a human hand, and means for holding said part in position, said means being provided with a part simulating hair, said part being adapted to be disposed above the upper of the fingers between which the first mentioned part may be positioned.

3. An amusement device comprising a part of width suflicient to permit its carrying projections simulating a pair of eyes and a nose, said part being adapted to be disposed between the fingers of a human hand.

4. An amusement device comprising a part formed of a sheet of suitable material, the forward edge of said sheet being formed to present projections simulating in contour and decoration a pair of eyes and a nose, the body of said sheet being adapted to be positioned between the fingers of a human hand.

5. An amusement device comprising a sheet of suitable material having a body adapted to be disposed between the fingers of a human hand and having at its front bent portions decorated to simulate a pair of human eyes and a bent portion between said first mentioned bent portion decorated to simulate a human nose.

6. An amusement device comprising a main member simulating a pair of eyes and a nose and adapted to be placed between the fingers of a human hand, a iiexible member connected therewith and engageable by the thumb of said hand for retaining said main member in position.

7. An amusement device comprising a main member simulating a pair of eyes and a nose and adapted to be placed between the fingers of a human hand, an elastic member connected therewith and engageable by the thumb of said hand for retaining said main member in position.

8. An amusement device comprising a main member simulating a pair of eyes and a nose and adapted to be placed between the fingers of a human hand, an elastic and flexible member connected therewith and engageable by the thumb of said hand for retaining said main member in position.

9. An amusement device comprising a main member simulating a pair of eyes and a nose and adapted to be positioned between the fingers of a human hand, material simulating hair and adapted to be disposed above the upper linger, and an elastic connection between said hair simulating material and said main member whereby to permit pressure of the thumb of the hand upon said hair simulating material to prevent dislodgment of said main member through said elastic connection.

10. An amusement device comprising a member simulating a tongue and adapted to extend between the lingers of a human hand, said member being engageable with the thumb of said hand and operable thereby.

11. An amusement device comprising a member simulating a tongue and adapted to be disposed between the fingers of a human hand, and means for connecting the said member with the thumb of said hand to permit operation thereby.

l2. An amusement device comprising a member formed of a sheet of suitable material and decorated at an end to simulate a tongue, said member being adapted to be positioned between the lingers of a human hand and being bent upwardly into position for operation by the thumb of said hand.

13. An amusement device comprising a tongue formed of a sheet of suitable material and adapted to be inserted between the fingers of a human hand, and a band secured to said tongue and adapted to embrace the thumb of said hand.

14. An amusement device comprising a main member simulating a nose and a pair of eyes, a member simulating a tongue, and a member simulating hair, said members being adapted to be positioned between the parts of the human hand to simulate a face, and connections between said members and the thumb of said hand to permit control by said thumb.
