To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE B. MILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Tazewell and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shot-Putting Slings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in slings for putting the shot and has as its object to provide a device of this nature for use in putting the small shot and the use of which will demand great precision and coordination of the functions of the eyes, brain, nerves, and muscles thus providing an athletic test which demands a very high degree of judgment of time, distance, weight, force, poise, and motion. 7

Another object of the invention is to provide a sling for the purpose stated of an extremely simple construction and adapted to be readily produced at a low cost and which 'will be durable and not liable to lose its shape.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of using the sling;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the sling in detail; and

Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the pocket of the sling.

The sling embodying the invention is preferably made from two pieces of mate rial, preferably leather, and one of these pieces comprises a thong which is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and which at an intermediate portion of its length is formed with a longitudinally extending incision 2 providing relatively separated portions 3 which when spread apart define a substantially diamond shaped space. The other piece of material is indicated by the numeral 4 and is in the nature of a gore which is stretched or otherwise marginally attached as at 5 to the spaced portions 8 of the thong and which extends across the space between these said portions and constitutes the pocket for receiving the shot to be put which shot is indicated by the reference letter S. The pocket, which is indicated by the numeral 6, is adapted to more or less snugly receive the shot as the gore 4- is given suflicient fullness to adapt it to sag to the required extent to adapt itself to the contour of the shot. It will be observed by reference to Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings that the gore 4 is disposed at its marginal portions I against one face of the spaced portions 3 of the thong 1 so that the inner side of the pocket is smooth and unobstructed and therefore no interference is offered to discharge of the shot from the pocket in the use of the slin The portions of the thong beyond the opposite ends ofthe portions 3 constitute straps one of which is indicated by the numeral 7 and the other by the numeral 8, and the said strap 7 is provided at its end with a finger loop 9 adapted to be slipped over the forefinger of the right hand, the end of the strap 8 being formed with a knot 10 which may be grasped between the forefinger and thumb of the right hand. With the strap ends grasped in the manner stated, the shot to be put is disposed within the pocket 6, and the sling is then whirled by the right arm until the moment at which the shotis to be discharged at which moment the knotted end 10 of the strap 8 is released. At this moment the centripetal force which has maintained the shot within the pocket ceases to act, and the shot will be discharged by centrifugal force from the pocket and will travel to the target.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

l. A; shot putting sling comprising an integral thong divided longitudinally by an incision at an intermediate portion of its length to provide spaced strands, and a web marginally united to the strands and extending between the same to form a missile receiving pocket.

2. A shot putting sling comprising an integral thong divided longitudinally by an incision at an intermediate portion of its length to provide spaced strands, and a web of flexible material disposed at its marginal portions against one face of the thong and united to said strands and constituting a missile receiving pocket.

3. A shot putting sling comprising an integral thong divided longitudinally by an incision at an intermediate portion of its length to provide spaced strands, a web marginally united to the strands and extending between the same to form a missile receiving pocket, the thong at one end beyond the pocket being provided with a finger loop and at its other end beyond the pocket being provided with a knot.
