Description

Jan. 14,1941. v. PROTZKY v SPORTING GOODS ARTICLE Filed March 15, 1959 INVENTOR. Va Zerz'e Proizly 6% I161 ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 14, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SPORTING GOODS ARTICLE Application March 15, 1939, Serial No. 261,894
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in goods and articles, used in the line or field of athletics and sports as well as in games, and it has for its main purpose to provide a device of the kind indicated above, which will especially be adaptable for children or boys in their games.
It is another object of this invention to provide a toy device, which when used in plays and 1 games will have a healthy physical effect upon children, while at the same time it will tend to sharpen the intellect and keenness of observation and control of the players movements during a game.
The device, which comprises four cooperating parts, as a unit, may be made of any kind of suitable materials.
Thus the device embodies a head member, two leg or knee members and a hand member, all 20 made to cooperate, as each member is adapted to repel or turn back a ball, when the latter in motion strikes against one of said members.
With the above and. other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts,
hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application, and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts 30 in all views, and in which:
Figure 1 shows in front elevation a member of the unit attached to the head of a boy; and, also, in a somewhat perspective view a member of the unit attached to the leg of a boy.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of thehead member.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a front elevational view of a member of the unit attached to the hand of the 40 player; while Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 in Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a perspective View of the member secured to the leg of a player, as shown, for in- 45 stance, in Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing,
, H), II and I2, I2 indicate members constituting a unit, or my combined sport or game device.
The member It! serves a double purpose, first 50 that of shading the eyes of the player; and, secondly, when sufficient dexterity is obtained, that of repelling a ball with the lower surface M of said member [0 upon a quick and well calculated movement of the head.
The said head member In, which like the other members may be made of any suitable materials, consists in detail of a flap [5, which latter in turn comprises an upper and lower layer, l6 and IT, with an in-between stiifening support l8 made, for instance, of cardboard, as shown 5 in Figure 3.
The flap I5 is embedded in a front portion [9 through a slit in the latter, as the endpieces of the layers l6 and I! are elongated and bent, as shown at 2| and 22, respectively, behind the said front portion I9, the latter being folded upon itself and over said endpieces, as shown in Figure 3.
The stiffening support consists of two layers l8 and [8, which also have their ends bent, as 1 shown at 30 and 30', thus lending stiffness to the front portion l9, while a rear strip 23 forms an inner smooth surface upon the front portion [9, so as to fit the head member l0 snugly to the forehead of a person. Apertures 24 are 29 formed at the ends of the front portion, so that an elastic band 25 may be attached thereto for the purpose of securing the head member ID to the head of a person.
In Figure 4 has been shown a member ll 25 adapted for attachment to the hand of a player. Said member, which preferably has the shape shown in Figure 4, is secured to the hand by means of straps 26, 26 inserted through holes '21 cut through the surface of the said member. 30
The member l2 shown in Figure 6 is adapted for attachment to the leg above the knee of the player. This member may be made in like manner as the member shown in Figure 2, while straps 28 forming part of the front portion I9 secure said member I2 to the leg.
When a ball 29 is thrown, the player, if the ball. is in the proper alignment, will bend his leg so as tohit said ball with the lower surface of the member l2, as may be noted in Figure 1, and has been indicated at [2.
It isobvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not, therefore, wish to limit myself to the exact construction and arrangement shown and described herein.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
In a game and sporting goods article, a head member adapted for attachment to the head of a player and comprising a forwardly extending flap, said flap consisting of an upper and a lower layer of suitable material, sheets of stiffening materials inserted between said layers, a rim portion formed with a central opening therein, and being adapted. to receive said layers and stiffening materials, said layers and stiffening materials being bent reversely upon the inner side of the rim portion, and said rim portion having its upper and lower edge portions overlapping said layers and stifiening materials, a member covering the inner side of the rim portion, the latter being at each end formed with apertures therein, and straps inserted in said apertures, whereby to secure the head member to the head of a player.
