Description

H. REICH TOY.

APPucATfoN man Dsc. 11, 1919.

Patented May 30, 1922.

y, the following UNITED STATES y PATENT OFFICE.

HANNAHv REICH, OF CHICAGO, IIQLINOIS.

TOY.

i Germany, Who'has declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States and has recelved his lirst papers therefor, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new.

and useful Improvements invToys, of which is a specification.

My invention relates to a toy and more particularly to a toy in the form of a mitten adapted to be placed over the hand and having head and body portions constructed in imltation of an animate objectfor example, a monkey and having hand or paw members attached to said body portion and movfable relative thereto whereby the head and hand or paw members may be manipulated by the `operator in imitation of such object.

The successful operation of a toy of this type depends upon the head and the hand or paw members clinging tightly to the proper fingers, or lingers and thumb, of the person manipulating the toy. Devices of this class as heretofore constructed have been faulty in this respect and invariably the relatively movable parts or members readily work off the fingers, or lingers and thumb, of the person manipulating the toy. The primary object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction of the receptacles or pockets formed in the head and hands or paw members for the insertion of the proper finger, or fingers and thumb, the receptacles or pockets being of such shape and constructed of such material as to cling tightly to the fingers, or fingers and thumb, as the case may be, whereby the head portion and the hand or paw members may be moved-independently of each other and relative to said body portions in close imitation of the various actions or movements of the object simulated.

A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of a mitten embodying the features of my invention; and Fig'. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same showin the hand therein with two lingers and the t umb inposition to manipulate the head portion and the paw members of the mitten.

The mitten comprises a main body portion consisting of a front 10, and a back 11,

Specification of Letters Patent.

composed of fur bearing material and formed and colored so as to give the general appearance of the skin of a monkey, the front and back portions being connected on the side edges, in a suitable manner, but being opened at the bottom portion 12, so as to provide an opening for the hand to be passed 1nto the mitten. The other end of the mitten is closed in any suitable manner and bears a head 13, which in the embodiment shown has the general appearance of the head of a monkey, and also paws 14 similar to monkey paws. Within the head and the paws are provided receptacles or pockets, 15, 16 and 18, respectively, for receiving the fingers, or the fingers and thumb, of the operator, as shown 1n Fig. 2.

By passing the hand into the mitten, as indicated in Fig. 2, with the middle linger in the chamber 15 in the head and the little finger in the chamber 16 in one paw, and the index finger or thumb in the other paw chamber 18, and by suitably manipulating the hand, thereby moving the head and paws in a manner common to monkeys, the mitten has a very striking resemblance to a live monkey, it being understood that the mitten is so held by the operator as to cover the lower portion of the mitten where the hand is inserted. i

In order to produce a striking resemblance to the movements of a monkey it is desirable to have the chambers in the head and paws arranged suitably to receive the proper fin` vgers or thumb. A characteristic action of a monkey is the movement of one paw across the face or nose, `in a sweeping or wiping fashion, and this is best accomplished by shaping the mitten so that one paw, either the right or left, according as the operator prefers to use the right or left hand, can be manipulated by the thumb as indicated. For this reason I prefer to shape the chamber 18 of the paw 14 so that the thumb is suitably enclosed by the walls of the chamber 18 projecting below the paw. The receptacles or pockets 15, 16 and 18 are of such shape as to cling tightly to the respective lingers of the operator when they are forced into them. These receptacles are preferably tapered, as shown in the drawing, and are formed of such material as to necessitate stretching the same in order to force them onto the fingers. For example, these receptacles or pockets may be formed of rubber somewhat like a finger cot so that they will readily adapt themselves to` and take a frietional grip on the fingers. With a toy constructed in accordance With my invention the hands or paws thereof may be moved in.a vertical plane, for example, over the ear, and all the motions of the object simulated, like scratching the ear, head or chin may be closely imitated Without the hands or paws Working loose or slipping ofi' the lingers.

I claim as my invention:

1. A toy in the form of a mitten adapted to be placed over the hand and having head and body portions constructed in imitation of an animate object and having hand or paw members attached to said body portions and movable relative thereto, said head having a receptacle for the insertion of one iner, said hand orpaW members, respectively, eing formed so as to provide therein receptaolesfor the insertion of two other lingers, or one other finger and the thumb, said receptacles being of Such shape and formed of such materlal as to take a friotional grip on the fingers or on the fingers and thumb, as the case mayv be,

which grip is maintained during manipulations of said head portion and said hand or paw members relative to each other and to said body portion, for the purpose specified.

2. A toy in the form of a mitten adapted to be placed over the hand and having head and body portions constructed in imltation of an animate object and having hand or paw members attached to said body portion and movable relative thereto, said head having a receptacle for the insertion of the middle finger, said hand or paw members, respectively, having receptacles provided therein for the insertion of the little finger and the thumb, said receptacles each being tapered and formed of an elastic material adapted to frctionally `grip the fingers or thumb, Which grip is maintained during manipulations of said head portion and said hand or paw members relative to each other and to said body portion for the purpose described.

In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand.
