Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed July 31, 1912. Serial No. 712,469.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVAN HYsLrN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a fruit holder adapted to be attached to the hand and in which the fruit is deposited by the fingers of the hand to which the device is attached.
It has for its object to construct such a de vice which will be simple and afford the greatest ease and comfort to the person picking the fruit, and which will be of such form that will conform substantially to the palmv of the hand and afford complete freedom to the fingers in picking and depositing the fruit therein and permit of rapidity in picking and the easy depositing of the fruit in the receptacle.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the features hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure. l is a side view of the pouch or receptacle attached to the hand; Fig. 2 a View looking at the palm side of the pouch, the
' hand being outlined in dotted lines.
The receptacle A is semi-circular in cross section with the portion which will be neXt to the palm of the hand substantially flat to conform to the palm and having the front open with the side walls extending upwardly along the opening so as to form a mouth at the front to receive the berries cast by the fingers into the receptacle. The receptacle is provided with a strap D at its rear end for attachment to the wrist, and with straps B and C at the upper corners of the front of the receptacle for attachment to the thumb and little finger, respectively, of the hand. By providing for attachment of opposite sides of the receptacle at its front end to the thumb and little finger provision is made for more or less contraction or expansion so as to afford greater ease and comfort for the hand of the picker. greater ease of manipulation-pf the first, second and third fingers of the hand inthe picking operation, and furthermore affords greater rapidity and ease in depositing the berries through the open mouth in the end of the pouch. The construction described also makes it possible to have the pouch cover and conform to the shape of the palm of the hand and toextend from the wrist to a point approximately between the second and third joints of the fingers, thus making easier depositing of the berries in the pouch.
The pouch at the portion next to the palm is provided with an inwardly extending flange portion E lying more or less across the palm of the hand to prevent contact of the fruit with the hand at such portion, and tending to hold the fruit below the top edges of the side walls of the pouch.
The straps B, C and D will be secured by suitable fastenings for instance by .well known snap fasteners 32, c, and cl.
The receptacle A may be formed of one piece of any suitable material as appears in Fig. 1, or, to more readily secure the proper form, it may be composed of several pieces as shown in Fig. 2 wherein, a, a are the side pieces suitably secured, by stitching or otherwise, to a central strip a, the forward ends of which are stitched, or otherwise suitably secured to the front or mouth forming strips a".
,Having described my invention what I claim is 1. A. fruit holder consisting of a pouch having a flange portion shaped to conform substantially to the outline of the palm of a hand and an open mouth at its forward end circumscribed by the walls of the pouch, and means for attaching the forward portion of the pouch to a finger and the thumb of a hand and its rear portion to the wrist, substantially as described.
This also affords 2. A fruit holder consisting of a palm enof the mouth forming strip to the thumb gaging flange, a pouch depending thereand little finger. 10 from, said pouch terminating at its forward In testimony whereof I afiix my signature portion in a flexible strip depending in a in presence of tWo Witnesses.
semicircle to form a mouth, means at the EVAN HYSLIN.
rear portion of said pouch for attaching the Witnesses: same to the Wrist of the user, and means at L. H. HIGGINS,
the forward portion for attaching the ends I. H. HILL.
Copies of this patent may be obtained. for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
