Description

N0 852,082. PATENTED APR. 30, 1907.
A. A. SMITH. FRUIT GATHERER. PPLIGATION FILED AUG ASA A. SMITH, OF MALAG-A, NEW JERSEY.
FRUlT-GATHERER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Eatented April 30, 1907.
Application filed August 10, 1906. Serial No. 330,016.
T0 a/ZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Asa A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malaga, in the county of Gloucester, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Fruit Gatherer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a device of novel and inexpensive construction to be worn on the forearm and adapted for gathering fruit in a convenient manner, provision being made for preventing injury to the wrist or sleeve of the person carrying the device and other details are presented as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a fruit gatherer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of a portion on line yy Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of a portion on line ;r9c Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section of a portion on line .22 Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a receptacle formed of sheet metal or other suitable material having an open top, the portion of Which, at what may be termed the back of said receptacle, being downwardly cut away forming a recess as at B so as to permit the fullest freedom of motion of the wristand of the hand of-the person using the device.
0 and D designate straps which are con nected with the receptacle respectively near the upper and lower portions thereof and provided with buckles or other suitable fas tenings, it being noticed that when the forearm is placed upon the back of the receptacle and the straps passed around the same and fastened, the receptacle is carried by the forearm leaving the hand project above the base E of the cut away portion B and the fingers free to grasp and pick the fruit and drop it in the receptacle, it being seen that the mouth of the latter presents the advantages of a scoop so that the fruit will be unfailingly received into the same and prevented from dropping sidewise therefrom. Again, the wrist or wrist portion of the user occupies the space of the cut away portion B and so permits greatest freedom of motion of the wrist at said portion and of the hand in entering the mouth of the receptacle, while directing the fruit in to the latter.
The portion of the back of the receptacle below the base E of the cut away portion B is flattened as at F so as to conform to the contour of the adjacent portion of the forearm with which it contacts and present a broad surface for resting the forearm thereagainst. The base E of the cut away portion B is folded on itself so as to bring the cut or raw edge of said base below and thus remove it from liability to have the wrist contact with the same, the wrist as is evi dent, being adapted to rest and work upon the top fold or bend of said base as most apparent in Fig. 2. Moreover the strap C is secured to the receptacle by the loops G which consist of properly cut or shaped pieces integral with the receptacle, bent backwardly and downwardly and properly socured at its outer terminal to the adjacent portion of the receptacle, thus avoiding the presentation of cut edges of the loop at top, whereby as is evident, the proper portions of the wrist will rest and work upon the top fold or bend of said loops.
The strap 1) is secured to the receptacle by being passed through openings II in opposite places of the receptacle, the material of the latter removed from the same to form said openings being bent inwardly on itself, forming lips which rest upon the receptacle, thus reinforcing the walls of said openings and accordingly strengthening the. same, and furthermore presenting the bonds of said loops for the contact of said. straps which prevent cutting of the latter while avoiding the presentation of cars or other projections to receive said strap 1) on the back of the receptacle, where the forearm contacts with the same. it is also evident that the straps may easily be withdrawn through the loops G and openings H and replaced or renewed as required and that the device is simple, practical and inexpensive in its nature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A fruit gatherer consisting of a recepta cle having a downwardly extending recess in the upper portion of its rear and having inte gral strap-securing means at the base of the recess, and a strap held by said means, said means being bent down from said base presenting uncut bends at top.
2. A fruit gatherer consisting of a receptacle having a downwardly extending recess n the upper portion of its rear and having integral strap-securing means at the base of the ICO recess, and a strap held by said means, the back of said receptacle belowsaid base being flattened to conform to the contour of the contacting portion of the forearm:
3. A fruit gatherer consisting of a receptacle, the same having a downwardly extending recess in the upper portion of its rear, lips on the wall of said recess, integral therewith bent on said receptacle forming loops, and a securing strap partly occupying said loops.
4. A fruit gatherer consisting of a receptacle, the same having a downwardly extending recess in the upper portion of its rear,
lips on the wall of said recess integral there- 15 pying said openings and being adapted to 20 contact with the bends of said lips.
