B. JUERGES BABY CARRIER Filed Jan. 2, 1924 INVENTOR:
ATTORNEYS.
Patented Jan. 13, 1925.
BER'IHA JUERGES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BABY CARRIER.
Application filed January 2, 1924. Serial No. 683,993.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. BERTI-IA Jul-irons. a citizen of Republic of Germany, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of 5 Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Baby Carrier, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a device for conveniently carrying a baby and preventing 1 it from slipping therefrom provision being also made for folding the device in compact form convenient for packing, placing in a pocket of a garment, or a satchel and for stowage and transportation.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the scope of the claim.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a baby carrier embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section thereof.
Figure 3 represents a perspective view of the device in folded condition.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates the baby carrier, the body of which is formed of the sides :2, the back 3, and the seat 4 which all are of suitable fabric or other pliable material.
To the upper ends of the sides 2 are secured the handles 5 by which the device may be carried, say by two persons the portions of said sides just below said handles being cut away forming openings 6 to allow parts of the hands of the persons carrying the child to be inserted thereinto while grasping the handles and also admit of the child passing his hands and forearms through said openings and resting them on the bottom walls of said openings.
Connected with the sides are the belts 7 which are adapted to be placed around the waist of the child in front and buckled together so as to retain the child upright on the seat and prevent it from falling bodily forward from the device.
A child is, however, liable to move improperly from the seat or shift forwardly on the same, and even then to turn under the waist belts 7, whereby it may drop from the seat to its injury. To prevent this, I employ what I term a crotch engaging piece which consists of the strap 8 which occupies a position at the front of the body of the device, its lower end portion 9 being stitched or otherwise firmly secured to the seat as at 10, and its upper end being formed with the loop 11 which is adapted to receive the adjacent lengths of the belts 7 and freely movable thereover to the right and left as well as over the buckle 12 of said belts 7 thereby permitting a greater freedom of movement of the legs as well as of the body of the child. s
The strap 8 is placed between the legs of the child and so may be engaged by its crotch thus controlling the forward motion of the child on the seat, the belts 7 forming the support of the front length of the strap 8.
The free end of the left hand belt 7 is adapted to be inserted in the loop 11 as a keeper therefor preventing the child from moving said end to tamper with the buckle 12. I
Within the fabric of the seat 4 are placed pieces 13 of board which serve to stiffen the seat and adds durability thereto. Two such pieces are employed, the same being placed side by side. Then the fabric of the seat between said pieces are stitched together forming the hinge 14: whereby one piece and the adjacent portion of the seat may be folded on each other, and with the remainder of the body folded together forming a compact bundle, as shown in Figure 3, convenient for placing in a pocket or satchel for packing, storage or transportation.
The entire device may be readily washed in its entirety and so kept clean as is evident.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A collapsible baby carrier consisting of a seat, sides, and a back, handles on said sides, waist straps fixed to said sides, extending forwardly and detachably joined at the front, and a crotch strap fixed to the front of the seat extending upwardly and ten minating in a loop through which said waist strap passes, thereby affording support of the upper looped end of the crotch strap, said looped end of the crotch strap being free to slide to and fro on said waist straps.
BERTHA J UERGES.
