1 Claim.
Our invention relates to safety guards or bands for infants or small children, and more particularly to a belt and supporting device that will safely hold a child in a highchair and various other forms of seats, including childs strollers, automobile seats, etc. The device is here shown as applied to a highchair, because it is there that the invention will probably have its widest use.
Our invention has for one of its objects the provision of a belt that will more effectively prevent a child from sliding from behind the belt and oil the highchair than various forms of straps and belts heretofore employed.
Another object of our invention is to provide a belt of the character referred to that incorporates a band of such width as to afford wider support to that portion of the infants body above its waist, and particularly to the abdomen and back, thereby assisting the child in maintaining its body in an upright position with a minimum of fatigue and discomfort.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the belt on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 2 shows the manner in which it is applied to a highchair.
The structure comprises a band portion I that may suitably be of leather, canvas, plastic or other suitable material of proper stilfness, whose ends are adjustably connected by straps 2 and 3. The upper and lower edges of the band have folds of felt 4 or any cushioning material secured thereto, in the nature of a selvaged edge, to cushion the upper and lower edges of the relatively stiff band.
Band straps 5 are secured to the rear portion of the band I in position to extend around and be buckled behind the chair back. Bracing strips 6 are secured to the band I and to the strap 5 at the rear side of the band, to effect distribution of stresses on the members. Straps I and 8 are secured to the rear portion and the mid portion respectively, of the band I and the strap 5, the strap 5' extending over the chair back and secured to the strap '1 by a buckle 9. This strap device 'I--8 assures maintaining of the band I at a desired suitable height for the child and chairback.
The band and strap members, except for the buckles, are preferably secured to one another by stitching or riveting. The band I may suitably be in the neighborhood of 4 inches in vertical width so as to give support to the abdomen and back of the child and also help to support all that portion of the body between its shoulders and its waist.
We claim as our invention:
A safety belt for children, comprising a band having a width not substantially less than the vertical dimension of an infants abdomen, means adjacent to the upper and lower edges of the band, for adjustably connecting the ends of the band to form a band of required diameter, a holding strap of narrow width relative to the band, and secured to the rear side of the band at approximately the horizontal mid line of the band, for connection around a chair back, a suspending strap connected at one end to an upper rear portion of the band in position to be laid over the upper edge of a chair back, a second suspending strap connected at its lower end to a rear portion of the narrow holding strap and connected at its upper end to the other end of the first-named suspending strap, and bracing strips secured at their upper ends, to an upper portion of the said band, at points substantial distances from the second-named suspending strap, the bracing strips extending in downwardly-diverging directions relative to each other and secured at their lower ends to the said narrow holding strap.
