Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 32.? 388 5.1
' Application filed lleptember a, 190?. serial No. 391,152. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVY A. BRENTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fortune, in the county of Moniteau and State of Swimming-Glove, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to swimming gloves.
The object of the invention is, in a novel and practical manner, to dis ense with the em loyment of finger stalls or holding the we bing attached to the hands and also to preclude the retention of water by the glove, whereby the same will be li hter in use, and the article as a whole may c more cheaply and readily manufactured.
With the aboye and other ob'ects in view as will appear as the natureof the invention is better understood, the same consists, generally stated, in a swimming 'love com risin a sheetof suitable matena prefer-ab y of rubber, having a contour approximating that of the outline-of the hand when the same is spread out, whereby the broadest surface will be presented to the water, the body thus constructed being provided on "one side with keepers through which the thumb and fingers are inserted for retaining the article in posi-' tion and being further rovided with a wristband having termina attaching means to secure it in position upon the wrist of the wearer adj acent ,to the juncture of the hand. The invention consists further in the various features of novelty of a swimming love that will-be hereinafter fully describe and claimed. Y
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, the figure is a View in elevationof a swimming glove constructed in accordance with the present inve ntion.
It will be understood that the gloves will be made right and left, in this instance onl the right hand glove being shown, the le t hand love of-course beings, counter; art
except that the parts are reversed.
The glove comprises an imperfo'r'ate body 1 which is constructed of an' suitable material, preferably of sheet ru her, and has a marginal contour ap roximating that of the sent the greatest sui ace to the water in use. The body should be. of com aratively thin tracted or iolded when the swimmer draws back his hands in taking a fresh stroke, and
is easily ex anded for the purpose of presentm a broa surface to the water. I
ln order to hold the body in posit on upon the hand, three bands or keepers 2, 3 and t. are employed, these being of any suitable material, such as rubber or textile material The band2 is approximately straight, and is attached at its terminals near the outer edge of the body,- as at 5, and to the intermediate portion of the body at 6, and is adapted to rest or bear across the back of the hand.
The band 3 is curved, and is attached at one terminal at 7 near the outer edge of the bodv, and its other terminal at 8 at the intermediate portion of the body, the keeper, he-
tween the terminal attaching points, being secured at three points 9, .10 and 11 to the body, thereby, in conjunction with-the attaching points 7 and 8, defining four finger loops, the distance between the attaching points being substantially the same The keeper i is secured at its termina'lslil and 13 to the body adjacent to its two edges .1 J and near theupper edge thereof, and is se cured at the points 14, 15 and 16, to the'iiodyj,
defining, in conjunction with the attaching;
points 12 and 13, four finger loops, the loop 17 that is to receive the fore finger and the loop 18 to receive the little finger being approximately of the same size, while the trio intermediate loops 19 and 20 are of considerj one edge and at intermediate points cit-ho mam.
are eebody, and are obliquely disposed relotirely to t e keeper 2, thus to agree'to the angular,
disposition'of the thumbwith regard {to the other fingers. a i
In order to securethe body to the wrist of the wearer, the band 251's employed which may be attached to th'e'body in any preferred manner and has terminal securingmeans,
this instance an ordinary glove fastener embodying the bail member 26 and socket member 27.
It will be seen from the foregoing descrip body to receive the thumb, a second handtion that all of the improvements herein defined will be simple in character, that they will be thoroughl effective for the purposes designed, and oil result in the production of on article having all of the utility that is present with swimming gloves that em loy i'm erstslls for retaining the article in p ace.
. hat is claimed is 2-' A swimming'glove comprising an imperferate body constructed of a sheet of suitable meteriel andsppro'priately contoured, spear of bands secure ,a. jacent to oneedge of the secured transversely of the intermediateportion of the body/and adapted to bear across the back of the hand, a third band divided eeeeu into four up roximately similarly sized loops intermediate loops being-of a size to loosely fit the middle and third finger.
Intestimony that I claim the foregoing as own, I have hereto affixed my signature m the presence of two witnesses. I
. ALVY A. BRENTON.
