H. GILES ARTIFICIAL FINGER Filed June 22. 1923 Patented June 17, 1924.
j j 1,498,029 PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN GILES, or MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
' ARTIFICIAL FINGER.
Application filed June 22, 1923. Serial No. 647,032.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IIERMAN GILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Artificial Fingers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an artificial finger having means for attaching the same to a hand.
To the above end, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a mutilated hand having all of the fingers removed therefrom with the exception ofthe thumb;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the invention applied to said hand;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the invention removed from the hand;
Fig. 4 is a detail view with some parts sectioned on the line lof Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a View of the finger-like member removed from its holder; and
Fig. 6 is a view of the hook member adapted to be attached to the holder in place of the finger-like member.
The numeral. 7 indicates a mutilated hand on which all. of the fingers have been re-' moved with the exception of the thumb. The invention includes a rigid yokedike holder 8 adapted to straddle the hand 7 between the thumb and the joint of the index finger and bear thereagainst. Secured to the prongs of the yoke-like holder '8 is a wrist-like band 9 having a pair of buckleequipped straps 10 by which said band can be adjustably secured around the wrist of th hand 7 to securely hold the holder in position.
A finger-like member 11 1s detachably secured to the transverse portion of the yokelike holder 8 by providing said member with a screw-threaded stem 12 adapted to be screwed into an outstanding boss on the transverse portion of said holder 8. The
yoke-like holder 8 and wrist band 9 firmly secure the finger-like member 11 to the hand so that articles may be picked up between the thumb and the finger-like member 11 by pressing the same with the thumb against said member.
Interchangeably usable with the fingerlike member 11 is a. hook-like member 13 having a screwthreaded stem 14, of the same size as the stem 12, for detachably securing the same to the holder 8.
What I claim is:
1. A yoke-like holder adapted to engage a hand between the thumb and the joint of the index finger thereof and having means for attaching the same to the hand, and a finger-like member on the transverse portion of said holder for co-operation with the thumb of the hand.
2. The structure defined in claim 1 in which the finger-like member is detachable.
3. A yoke-like holder adapted to engage a hand between the thumb and the joint of the index finger thereof and having means for attachingkthe same to the hand, and interchangeably usable finger-like members applicable to the intermediate portion of the holder.
L. A rigid yoke-like member adapted to straddle a hand between the thumb and joint of the index finger and having means for attaching the same to the hand, and a finger-like member attached to said holder for eo-operation with the thumb of the hand.
5. A rigid yoke-like member adapted to straddle a hand between the thumb and joint of the index linger and having means for attaching the same to the hand, and a finger-like member having detachable screw-threaded engagement with the holder for co-operating with the thumb of the hand.
6. A rigid yoke-like holder adapted to straddle a hand between the thumb and joint of the index finger, a wrist band attached to the prongs of said holder, and a finger-like member attached to said yokelike holder for co-operation withthe thumb of the hand.
7. The structure defined in claim 6 in which the wrist band is provided with a buckle-equipped strap.
In testimony whereof I'afiix my signature- HERMAN GILES.
