w. w. CARNETT PENCIL CLIP OR HOLDER Jan. 29,1924. 1,481,984
Filed May 11, 1923 gvwentoz Patented Jan. 29, T1924.
#:1- ri i OIL CLIP OR HOLDER.
Application filed May 11,
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM vV. CARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain View, in the county of Stone and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Pencil Clip or Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a simple means for holding a pencil on a book, detachably, and an out-of-the-way position.
It is within the )rovince of the disclosure to improve general y and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in perspective, a book whereon the device forming the subject matter of this application has been mounted; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2--2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective disclosing the device per se; Figure 4.- is a plan disclosing a slightly modified construction.
The numeral 1 designates a book including a cover 2 and leaves 3. The numeral 4: designates an article of any desired sort, which it is desired to mount on the book. To avoid a waste of words, the article 4 will be described hereinafter as a pencil. I
The device forming the subject matter of this application preferably is made of one iece of resilient metal and includes a pencilliolding socket 5 provided with an offset grip 6 extended transversely of the axis of the socket, the socket embodying free ends 8 and 7, the end 8 being struck out of the grip 6, the grip 6, therefore being loop shaped and including an opening 9 result ing from the striking out of the end 8. The end 8 of the socket 5 is provided with an inwardly extended flange 1O spaced from the free end 11 of thegrip 6. The grip 6 is of angular form, and includes a shoulder 1323. $eria1 No. 638,310.
12. A resilient tongue 14 projects "from one end of the socket 5. The pencil t is held frictionally in the socket 5 between the ends 8 and 7 of the socket, the flange 10 aiding in retaining the pencil. The end 7 of the socket 5 has an opening 15, into which the thumb of an operator may be placed to facilitate the sliding of the device along the pencil 4, or to facilitate the sliding of the pencil and the device which carries it, along the cover 2 of the book, when the structure is mounted on the cover 2 as hereinafter described.
Tn practical operation, the edge of the cover 2 is inserted between the grip 6 and the end 8 of the socket 5. Because the flange 10 is spaced from the free end of the grip 11, the edge of the cover 2 may be inserted readily between the parts 6 and 8an observation which will be understood readily when Figure 2 is noted. Further, because the end 8 of the socket 5 is supplied with the flange 10,the leaves 3 of the book 1 will not be marred when the device is mounted in place on the edge of the cover 2, as shown in Figure 2. The tongue 14 may be used when the pencil 4 is carried in a garment pocket, but the tongue 1A has an additional use, as shown in Figure 4. Thus, a flexible member 16, such as a piece of paper, may be looped about the tongue 14:, the flexible member extending between the leaves 3 of the book to aid in holding the pencil in place,
the part 16 serving, also, as a book mark.
What is claimed is 1- 1. A device of the class described,,comprising a pencil-holding socket provided with an offset grip extended transversely of theaxis of the socket, the socket having free ends, one of which is struck out of the g 2 A device of the class described, com prising a pencil-holding socket provided with an offset grip extended transversely of the axis of the socket, the socket having free ends,'one of which is provided with an inwardly extended flange spaced from the free end of the grip.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a pencil-holding socket provided with an offset grip extended transversely of the axis of the socket, and adapted to engage edge of 21 cover of a book, 4 tongue In testimony that I claim the foregoing PI'OJGCtlllg from one end of the socket, and as my own, I have hereto affixed my s1gnaa flexlble element assembled \vlth the tongue ture 1n the presence of two wltnesses.
and projecting transversely of the axis 0f WILLIAM W. CARNETT. 5 the socket and adapted to be inserted into Witnesses:
the leaves of a book, to' aid in holding the G. W. LOONEY,
grip on the edge of the cover of the book. v J. I WEBB.
