PENCIL HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY E. MATHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pencil holders, the device being especially designed for use in connection with a telephone standard so as to conveniently support a pencil in position for use at the neck of the standard immediately below the transmitter mouth piece, although it is to be understood that the device may be adapted for numerous otherv uses.

It is an object of the invention to provide a holder of the class described which may be readily sprung into position so as to engage the telephone standard or the like and will freely receive a pencil, while at the same time remaining firm on the standard and preventing accidental displacement of the pencil.

A further object of the invention is to generally improve and simplify the construction, and enhance the value and facilitate the manufacture of devices to which this application appertains.

These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved holder, 1

Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the device in applied position for use as a pencil holder in connection with a telephone.

Referring to the drawings in detail, in which for purposes of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the improved holder is shown as comprising two strips 10 and 11 of spring or resilient metal preferably pressed spring steel of such grade as to maintain its shape when bentor conformed as will be set forth. These strips are provided with intermediate straight or rectilinear portions rigidly connected in any suit-able way as by means of spaced fastening devices or rivets 12, the opposed strips being disposed in contactat said straight portions .and provided with registering apertures 13 for receiving the fastening means.

As secured together between their ends, the strips are provided at corresponding end portions with branching or outwardly bowed portions 14 forming opposed expanded parts spaced from the extremities of the strips and branching from the intermediate contacting portions, the portions 14 being bowed in opposite outward directions. Beyond the opposed bowed or expanded portions 14. the adjacent ends of the strips are provided with opposed contracted portions 15 curved toward each other to provide a restricted throat portion 16, while the free ends, between which the intermediate opposed contracted portions 15 and the opposed bowed or expanded portions 14 are formed, are flared outwardly :as indicated at 17, being disposed in outwardly diverging relation preferably at obtuse angles relative to each other; j

The other end portions of the strips are provided with opposed bowed or.expanded portions 18 of smaller dimension than the portions 14 and disposed more closely related positions to each other; the intermediate or opposed contracted portions 19 and the outwardly diverging or flared end portions 20. The portions 18, 19 and 20 form spring jaws which are smaller than the jaws produced by the portions 14, 15 and 17, while the throat portion 21 is preferably more restricted or smaller than the throat portion 16.

In practice, the device is designed to be engaged at the neck portion 22 of a telephone standard 23 as clearly shown 1n Figure 3 of the drawings, the bowed portions 14 being adapted to embrace a portion of the standard of the telephone or other devlce, in connection with which the holder 1s used. The free ends 17 of the strips serving as guides so that the device can be readily applied to facilitate and cause expansion of the bowed portions and spreading of the sprin jaws at the throat 16, and then to allow the return of said portions to their normal positions to clamp the device to the standard. The other jaws or body port1ons are designed to receive a pencil as indicated at 24, the same being guided by the flared end portions 20- through the throat 21 so as to be firmly held between the opposed bowed or expanded portions 18 In this manner the pencil can be freely inserted and due to the resiliency of the material, the holder will be firmly held to the telephone or other support to which attached in service and the pencil will also be resiliently supported and secured against accidental displacement hile at the same time permitting the convenient application and removal thereof.

'hile I have described the device as being formed of two spring'metal strips secured together=or in contact so as to form a relatively integral intermediate portion between the spaced gripping jaws at the ends thereof, it is to be understood that the intermediate portion may be formed as a single part or integral structure so that it is provided with the end formations as described. It will also be understood that when the device is in use on a telephone, it will extend outward in a horizontal plane and any convenient position for use as described, without interfering with the use of the telephone, either of the receiver or the transmitter, while the pencil will alwa' vs be at hand for use.

'hile I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will beunderstood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come withinthe scope of the appended claims.

Having thus describediny invent-ion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent is 1. A holder comprisin astraight flat intermediate portion and opposed spring 'jaws at each .end thereof, said jaws havlng .disposed in contact, and connecting means for said straight port-ions intermediate of the ends thereof, said strips having oppositely and outwardly bowed ends curved inwardly to form restricted open throat portions and diverging extremities extending substantially diagonally forward beyond said restricted throat portions.
