(No Model.)
O. B. CAMPBELL. COMBINED PENCIL HOLDER, SHARPENER, AND ERASER.
No. 475,485. Patented May 24, 1892.
WITNESSES.
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
OYDNOR B. CAMPBELL, OF GLOUSTER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF TWVO-THIRDS TO DAVID S. BEVERLY AND J. M. ALLEN, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED PENCIL HOLDER, SHARPENER, AND ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,485, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed October 20, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CYDNoE B. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glouster, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pencil Holder, Sharpener, and Eraser; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combined pencilholder, pencil-sharpener, and eraser.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character which can be readily attached to and detached from a vest or coat pocket, and by which a pencil can be securely held, being provided with a pencil-sharpening blade and ink and pencil erasers, as will hereinafter appear, thus forming a very useful and convenient article for clerks, book-keepers, and others engaged in similar pursuits.
The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a portion of a vest with my improved holder attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same.
In the said drawings the reference-n umeral 1 designates a small block of Wood, celluloid, metal, or other suitable material having its front and back faces preferably curved or concaved.
The numeral 2 denotes a clamp consisting of a piece of spring-Wire bent over upon itself at the center, forming arms 3, and its ends 4 bent at right angles and secured to the block 1. This portion, when the arm is bent upon itself, is turned or bent outwardly, as seen in the drawings, forming a semicircular arm 5, adapted to bear upon a pencil and hold it against the block.
At or near its center the block 1 is formed with a slot 6, in which is located a curved blade or knife 7, the cutting-edge of which Serial No. 409,253. (No model.)
projects slightly beyond the opposite face of the block to which the clamp is secured. It
will be noted that the block is provided with notches 8, in which the free end of the clamp rests, so as to prevent the same from slipping when sharpening a pencil.
The manner of using the invention is as follows: The block is placed in the pocket with the clamp upon the outside, the material of the pocket being clamped between the block and clamp. The pencil is inserted be tween the block and said material and by means of the spring-clamp is securely held therein and prevented from being accidentally detached. To sharpen a pencil, the holder is removed from the pocket and the pencil is reciprocated back and forth in the concave face of the block opposite the face to which the clamp is secured, the cutting-blade shoving off the wood and lead at each alternate stroke of the pencil.
From the above it will be seen that my invention can be easily and quickly attached to and detached from a garment, and by reason of its fitting closely thereto will not be liable to become accidentally detached, and it will not injure the clothing in case it is pulled off, as the clamp has no positive engagement with the garment, but is held by spring-pressure. A rubber and ink eraser (marked 9 and 10, respectively) should be attached to the ends of the block.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A combined pencil-holder, pencil-sharpener, and eraserconsisting of a block having a slot near its center and a notch at each side of said slot, the clamp consisting of a piece of spring-wire bent upon itself and having its ends secured to the holder, a cutting-blade located in said slot, and the erasers in the ends of the block, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
