Description

R. C. BOUGHTON. COMBINATION PENCIL CLIP AND PENCIL SHARPENER. APPLICATION FILED M014. 1915.
1,218,741, a Patented Mar.13,.1917.
WITNESSES: IIVVE/VTOI? A TTORIV E Y ROGER C. BOUGI-ITON, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION EENCIL-CLIP AND PEN CIL-SI-IARPENER.
Application filed December 14, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Room: C. BoUcHToN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Fresno county of Fresno, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Pencil-Clip and Pencil-Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for holding the pencil firmly and clamping it to the side of the pocket, with which is combined a pencil sharpener which when not in use is protected 'by a shield which is a part of the pencil clip.
In the drawings accompanying this specification Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective view of the device with parts cut away to show the inclosed pencil sharpener, and showing a pencil therein.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of Fig. 1 on line 00. Fig. 3 is a view of the pencil sharpener and the spring extension thereon as viewed from the side. Fig. 4 is a sectional View of Fig. 3 on line y. Fig. 5 is a top view of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the portion of the device which holds the pencil. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of Fig. 6, on line 2.
In said drawings D represents the portion of the device which holds the pencil. It consists of a tube preferably of spring metal cut open lengthwise, and with the edges f thereof rolled over. K is a shield which I have constructed with a flat portion m, having supports n on each side thereof curved to conform to form of the surface of tube D to which tube it is attached, forming a recess 71. between the shield K and the tube D. B is the combination pencil sharpener and the finger or extension of the pencil clip. It consists of a finger z and a, plate 0 which is covered with an abrasive material, or the surface of which is formed abrasive. Either side, or both sides of plate 0 can be made abrasive. The form of plate 0 can be made concave or convex instead of flat if desired. On each side of plate 0 is attached a curved member j. The combination of plate 0 and curved members j are such that they will fit into the recess it. I have constructed curved members j of a greater con cavity at one end than at the other so when Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 13, 1917. Serial No. 66,707.
they are inserted in the recess h, they will bind slightly therein and the combination B will be held more firmly in place in the shield. At the end of plate 0 where the curved members are the smallest I have attached a finger or extension 2' preferably of spring metal, having a ball e at the end thereof. In lieu of such ball the end may be otherwise formed so it will not readily tear the clothing. It will be noted that when the combined pencil clip and sharpener is assembled and a pencil is inserted in the holder, that the extension 9 in connection with the pencil forms a clamp and by placing the pencil in the pocket the combination can be clamped to the side thereof. When it is desired to sharpen the pencil the plate having the abrasive surface can be pulled from the shield and used for that purpose. The object of the shield is to prevent the soiling of fingers and clothes from the pencil dust left on the sharpener. The combination pencil sharpener and clip can be formed by constructing any portion of the outside surface of the clip with an abrasive surface. 0 is a pencil shown in the clip.
I am aware that pencil clips are old.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a pencil sharpener and pencil clip consisting of a slit tubular portion, an abrasive plate, a finger extension on the abrasive plate, and means for attaching such abrasive plate to the tubular portion, consisting of a pocket attached to such tubular portion of such size that the abrasive plate will fit loosely therein, and spring means for holding the plate in said pocket, all substantially as described.
2. A pencil sharpener and pencil clip consisting of a plate having an abrasive surface with curved wings on each side thereof, constructed of springy-material, and a finger extension thereon,.in combination with a container ofsuch size that the plate will readily enter therein and the wings will press against av wall thereof, and means attached to said container for'holding a pencil parallel with the finger extension, all substantially as described.
3. A pencil sharpener consisting of a plate into such container in combination with means attached to said container for holding a pencil parallel With the finger.
ROGER C. BOUGHTQN.
on each side thereof, such curved Wings being constructed of springy material and being less concave at the end farthest from the finger than near to it, and a container of such relative size that the plate Will readilyenter therein at the end opposite the finger, and will fit tightly therein when forced Witnesses IVA E.
