wucmtoa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LDELLO A. HoLooMB. OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
PEN, PENCIL, STOGIE, AND CIGAR HOLDER.
Application filed June 19. 1913.
To aZlw/wm it may concern 4 Be it known that I, Dunno A. HoLooMn. a citizen. oi. the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahonlng and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen, .len-
cil, Stogie, and Cigar Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends improvements in pen and pencil holders and relates more particularly to those which are especially adapted for attachment to a pocket or belt in order that pens and pencils may be'easily and conveniently arried.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of aholder of this type which may be very cheapl manufactured so as to sell at a relatively low price, which will form a convenient and practical deviee, and'which may be used for holding a plurality of articles.
-A-nother and more specific object of the invention is to provide a pen and pencil holder. formed of a single strip of spring metal by bending said strip so as to provide a U-shaped body and a clamping portion formed upon one side of the body.
The invention also aims to generally improve devices of this nature to render the same more useful and commercially desirable.
lVith theseand will become more tion proceeds, the tain novel features of construction, conihi nation. and arm'ugcmcnt of parts. as will be hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention. reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view ol the pen and pencil holder. Fig. 3 is a side elevation oli the device, showing, a pcncil sccnrcd therein, Fig. 3 is a transverse M'PllUH taken on the plane of line l- 1 of l'ig. 2. a.
l: is a transverse sectional view showother objects in view, as apparent as the descrip- Fig. .ing a modilicd Form of holder.
l, 'lorm m v holder from a single piece of spring metal by bonding the some back upon itscll to form a somewhat U-shapcd hodv having an outer wall 5 and an inner wall Specification of Letters Patent.
invention consists in eel- Patented Jan. 23, 191 Serial No. 774,678.
(3. At the juncture of the two walls the strip is curved, as indicated by the numeral 7, and forms to normally force the upper edges of the walls toward each other. These walls contact with one another adjacent their upper edges and then diverge, as indicated. by the numeral 8 so as to form a sort of. month which will direct a pen or pencil between the walls 5 and 6. The inner wall 6 is formed with a plurality of corrugations 9 which form inwardly opening grooves or channels into which the pens and pencils fit when they are positioned within the holder. These corrugations extend practi cally the .tnll length of the wall (5 and also tend to reinforce thesametand provide a stronger device.
A clamping wall or portion 10 is formed by bending. one extremity of the spring metal clip against the face of the inner wall (5, as clearly shown in the drawings. An open loop 11 is forn'ied at the top o'lthe clamping portion 10 and tends to force the latter normally against the wall 6 and the lower edge of the clamping portion is bentaway from said. wall, as indicated by the numeral 12, so that a pocket wall, belt, or other support may be easily inserted between the clamping portion and body the holder.
In .l ig. l I have shown a modified form of the device, wherein the walls 13 and 14 are both of a corrugated or wavy construction so as to form a plurality of pockets 15, in which various artic es, such as pens, pencils. slogies, and cigars, i'nay'be held. If desired, the outer wall of the holder may he slit longitudinally for a distance from its upper cdge, as indieated by the. mnneral 16 so that the outer walls of the pockets may spring inde u-ndcutly of one another so as to hold articles of different sizes. It is to he uluhastood that .1 may provide only the outer wall 5 with corrugations it dc 'iretl.
From the-foregoing description taken in connection with thc acrom'panving drawings. it will lie apparcnt that l have pro- \idcd an extronu-lv simple holder, which may he very cheaply manufactured so as to sell at a relatively low price. his holder will prevent the points of pencils being broken and also prevent cigars, stogics, etc.
a spring portion which tends preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to this exact construction, combination, and arrangement of arts, but may make such changes as will all within the s irit and scope of the invention as define by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A device of the character set forth formed of a single strip of flat metal having its opjposite ends looped to provide transversely *arranged spring portions, said ends bent to lie back upon the body in opposite. directions, one of said ends forming a clamping member, the opposite end forming an outer wall, the face of the bod opposin the inner face of the outer wal provide with a plurality of longitudinally extending corru ations forming pockets and being provi ed with an outwardly inclined upper end to permit articles to be readily inserted in the pockets.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
