2 Claims.

My invention relates to an improved pen and pencil holder and the primary object thereof is to provide a device of this character which may be readily attached to a loose leaf binder, reference book, ledger, or the like to secure a pen and pencil thereto in readily accessible position for use as desired.

Another object is to provide a device for the purpose above set forth which houses and thereby protects the pencil point and which may be formed from a single piece of suitable material, is strong and durable and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

Other and subordinate objects together with the exact nature of my improvements, will be readily understood from the following description and claims and upon reference to the accompanying drawings.

In said drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in top plan of the cover of a loose leaf binder, ledger, or similar article having my improved holder attached thereto.

Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and drawn to an enlarged scale.

Figure 3 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale.

Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1, and

Figure 5 is a plan view of a blank from which the device is formed.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, it will be seen that my improved holder comprises a base I of substantially rectangular form and slightly longer than the usual new pencil. The base I is formed of any suitable material, such as resilient sheet metal, and attached at suitable points, preferably by rivets 2, although other means may be used, to the cover 3 of the binder preferably adjacent to the rear edge thereof and parallel with that edge.

At one end, said base I has formed thereon a tapered resilient roll 4 extending from the rear edge of said base over the latter and of the proper length and diameter to form a sheath housing the sharpened end of the pencil 5 and clampingly 5O engaging said end. Opposite the roll 4 a keeper flap 6 is struck up from said base I and bent over the roll 4, as at i, to prevent said roll from being sprung out of shape.

Intermediate the roll 4 and the opposite end of the base I the latter is formed with a pair of 1937, Serial No. 131,730

longitudinally spaced rolls 8 extending from the rear edge of said base i over the same in axial alignment with the roll 4 and adapted to function as keepers for securing the pencil in position intermediate its ends. The rolls 8 each terminate in a forwardly extending upwardly bowed resilient clip 9 cooperating with base i to clampingly engage a fountain pen. ill. Base 1 is reinforced along its front and end edges by bending said base back upon itself along its front edge, as at H, and rolling the end edges of said base as shown at l2.

The described holder is formed from a single piece of flat material, such as previously mentioned, of strip-like form, designated iii in Figure 5, which is provided with squared ends l4. At one end said strip embodies an edge flap 15 for forming the roll 4. Intermediate said flap l5 and the opposite end of the strip is a pair of spaced apart shorted flaps M3 on the same edge as the flap l5 from which the rolls 8 and clips 9 are formed as will be clear. Opposite to flap E5 the strip i3 is slit inwardly from the edge thereof along parallel lines H to provide a free portion 58 for forming the aforementioned flap 1. At appropriate points adjacent its ends and at the front edge thereof said strip is slit inwardly as at I9 and 20 to provide for bending said edge and rolling said ends for the purpose previously explained.

The foregoing is a detailed description of the preferred embodiment of my invention and it is believed that the construction, use and advantages will be clear therefrom. It is to be under stood, however, that the present disclosure is illustrated rather than restrictive and that right is herein reserved to modifications in details described falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A combined pen and pencil holder comprising a substantially rectangular strip of resilient metal having at one end a rolled tapered portion extending from one side edge thereof and over said strip and forming an expansible reactive socket member for gripping the pointed end of a pencil, and a pair of spaced apart rolled portions extending from said side edge intermediate the tapered portion and the opposite end of the strip and in axial alignment with said tapered portion, said pair of portions forming guides for aligning the pencil with said tapered portion during insertion of the pointed end thereof in the latter and keepers for holding said pencil in position intermediate the ends thereof, said pair of portions having free resilient upwardly bowed ends cooperating with said strip to clamp a pen therebetween.

2. A combined pen and pencil holder comprising a substantially rectangular strip of resilient metal having at one end a rolled tapered portion extending from one side edge thereof and over said strip and forming an expansible reactive socket member for gripping the pointed end of a pencil, and a pair of spaced apart rolled portions extending from said side edge intermediate the tapered portion and the opposite end of the strip and in axial alignment with said tapered portion,

said pair of portions forming guides for aligning the pencil with said tapered portion during insertion of the pointed end thereof in the latter and keepers for holding said pencil in position intermediate the ends thereof, said pair of portions having free resilient upwardly bowed ends coop-- erating with said strip to clamp a pen therebetween, and said strip having struck-up from the edge thereof opposite the side edge first mentioned a fiap'rolled over said .tapered portion to 10 limit expansion of the latter.
