TAB CLIP Filed Sept. 17, 1935 Patented Sept. 22, 1936 UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a tab clip, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which affords convenient and effective means whereby a particular paper may be readily and quickly identified or located and also adapted to be used for kindred or similar purposes.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tab clip whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference. to the accompanying drawing, wherein:--
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a tab clip constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on theline 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 but illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 but disclosing a further slightly modified embodiment of the invention.
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, C denotes a wire clip of a conventional type and which has its opposite extremities comprised in substantially U-shaped portions l, the clip as a unit to be slipped in a conventional and well known manner upon the marginal portion of a paper sheet or kindred article. .As the detailed construction of the clip is well known and, therefore, forms no particular part of the present invention a specific description is not believed to be necessary.
Each U-shaped extremity l is received within a tab '1 of a cellulose or other material as may be preferred and said tab T in side elevation as herein disclosed is substantially semi-circular in form and comprises fiat side plates 2 spaced apart sufficiently to snugly receive therebetween an extremity l of the clip C. The curved margins of the plates 2 are defined by inwardly directed flanges 3 with one flange, as herein disclosed, overlapping the other whereby the tab in its entirety provides a pocket, the closing marginal wall as afiorded bythe overlapping flanges 3 being of a radius substantially equal to the curved bar of the U-shaped extremity.
The tab '1 as is illustrated in Figure 2 is held in working or applied position upon the clip C by a filler 4 of glue or other adhesive although it is to be understood that it is within the scope of my invention to provide means other than an adhesive for holding the tab in place.
The straight edges of the plates 2 extend transversely across each end portion of the clip C at a desired point and these straight edges provide stops for contact with the edge of a paper sheet or other article to which the clip C is applied to limit the extent of endwise movement of the clip inwardly of the sheet or the like whereby it is assured that the plates 2 will be positioned beyond said edge of the sheet. In applying a clip it is to be understood, however, that initially the clip is adjusted to allow the tab at one end of the clip to slip over the sheet and a straight edge of the tab T at the outer end of the clip constituting the desired stop.
The outer faces of the plates 2 may be finished in any manner desired and carry a suitable identification as a numeral 5 or, as illustrated in Figure 3, the outer faces of the tab T may be provided with a distinguishing color or, as illustrated in Figure 4, the tab T' may have produced on its faces a suitable letter 6 as the identifying medium.
It is believed to be readily understood that a tab clip constructed in accordance with my invention may be employed as a convenient and efflcient medium for indexing or' otherwise identifying papers; can be used in the keeping of scores by attaching the clips to a wire or other convenient support; can be used as a marker to be applied to garments; to signify admission paid, identity or membership; and kindred other uses.
I claim:--
In combination with a clip to slip upon the marginal portion of a sheet, a hollow tab having one end open and having fiat side plates spaced apart sufliciently to snugly receive therebetween the end portion of the clip inserted within the tab through the open end thereof, the opposite end of the tab being closed and formed to closely contact with the adjacent end of the clip inserted within the tab, the side plates at the open end of the tab being straight and providing stops for contact with an edge of the sheet to which the clip is applied to limit the extent ofendwise movement of the clip inwardly of the sheet, and an initially plastic filler within the tab coacting with the side plates of the tab and the inserted end of the clip to hold the tab upon the clip, and identifying means carried by the tab.
