Description

Jan. 31, 1933. 1 ALLEN 1,895,960
FOLDER Filed Oct. 21, 1931 INVENTOR jay fi' BY Patented Jan. 31, 1933 UNITED. STATES PATENT ppm;
IVAN ALLEN, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA FOLDER:
Application filed October 21, 153i. Serial No. 510,191
This invention relates to folder files for receiving and protecting letters and similar documents and has for the primary object,
. the provision of a device of the above stated character, whereby a plurality of letters and the like may be easily and quickly placed in'and removed from the folder file and entirely obviates the employment of pins, paper clips and like devices heretofore emplo ed for retaining the letters or papers wit in their proper places and will permit each individual letter or paper to be easily examined as to title and signature, without removal from the folder file, thereby effecting a large saving of time and preventing possible loss of a letter or paper.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means which may be easily and quickly attached to a folder file during or after the manufacture of the latter for holding in the file any number of letters or papers and which will increase in efliciency as the number of letters or papers received thereby increases and will maintain the file in a more uniform thickness than heretofore possible with the conventional type of paper clips or ins. P With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating a folder file constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view illustrating the same with a number of papers held within the folder file.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating the means of securing the clip or clamp to the folder file.
Figure 4 is a plan view illustrating the clip or clamp.
Figure 5 is an end viewpillustrating the same.
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating gillle' clip or clamp removed from the folder v v Referring'in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a folder file of the type including panels Qand 3 foldable one upon the other for the purpose of housing and protecting a plurality of letters or similar papers 4. One edge of the panel 3 is slightly extended as shown at 5 for the purposeof receiving the usual indexing'characters.
' Relatively spaced parallel slots-6 and? are formed in the panel 3 with the slot 6 spaced a slight distancefromthe fold 8 between the panels 2 and3. The slots6 and 7 are adapted to receive a clamp or clip 9 overlyin and bearing against the panel 3 with su cient resiliency to permit a number of letters or papers to be placed thereunder and firmly held against the panel 3. Thejclip or clamp 9 is so located that the papers orletters are held upon the panels3 in a manner similar to the leaves Within a book so that each letter and also obviates tlre necessity of attaching the letters orpapers to each other and to the file by pins, paper clips or similar fasteners. The clip or clamp 9 comprises a substantially V-shaped body 10 which is disposed over the panel 3 or the inner face thereof and has formed integral with the ends thereof arms 11 terminating in laterally disposed projections 12. The arms overlie the opposite face of the panel 3 from the body 10 and extend through the slot 7 with the projections 12 in, engagement with the end walls thereof for firmly securing the clip or clamp to the folder file. The arms 11 are of a resilient nature and have a tendency to diverge so as to bear against the end walls of the. slot 7 rendering it necessary to move the arms toward each other in order to disconnect the clip or clamp from the folder 5. Theclip or clamp may be constructed from any material suitable for the purpose and preferably from a single length of resilient material bent into the shape heretofore described thereby providing a device which may be manufactured at a very nominal cost and can be applied to an ordinary type of folder file after the same has been provided with the slots 6 and 7.
The body 10 of the clamp or clip adjacent its apex is slightly bent or offset so that the apex of said body will bear against the papers confined thereunder. i
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A folder comprising a sheet of material folded upon itself to provide a backing and a cover therefor having a hinging movement, said backing having slots with one of said slots located in close proximity to the cover Where the latter hinges onto the backing, a resilient V-shaped clip overlying the backing with the apex thereof disposed towards the free side edge of the backing and consisting of diverging arms bent back upon themselves to provide parallel extensions with looped portions between themselves and the arms and with the looped portions arranged through the slot adjacent the cover to permit said extensions to overlie the outer face of ,the'backing with the ends of the extensions bent angu other slot.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
' IVAN ALLEN.
