To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, Janus 'B. Smvnu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Hill, in the county of York and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Book-Marks and Paper-Clips, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a combined bookmark and paper clip.

An important object of this invention is to provide a 'device of the above character, which is simple in construction, efficient in fulfilling its function, and cheap to manufaeture.

A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the above character, which may be used as an advertising novelty.

The final object of my invention is to provide a book mark which may be readily secured to a book, and which will permit of the leaves of said book being turned, without the removal of said book-mark or its manipulation in any manner.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a blank forming the body por tion of the book-mark, said blank being shown in a fiat position before the same is bent upon itself intermediate its ends. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a blank of metal, shown in a flat position before the same is bent intermediate its ends and tempered when so bent to form a substantially U- shaped spring member. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the book-mark, in its assembled form. Fig. 4 is a similar view, showing the same applied to a book, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 4.

In the drawings, wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a blank as a whole, which is to be bent intermediate its ends to serve as the body portion of the book-mark. This blank or body portion which is bent intermediate its ends, as aboi e stated, has portions thereof substantially parallel. This blank 1 may preferably be formed of paper, although any other suitable material may be employed. The blank 1 has one end thereof provided with an arrow head, as

shown at 2, and this arrow head is provided with a. tapering section 3. The blank 1 is provided adjacent the arrow head 2, with spaced transverse slits 4, as shown. The blank 1 has formed upon its opposite end, an enlarged triangular section of material 5, provided with a Ushaped slit (3, which re sults in the formation of a tongue 7. The function of this tongue is to cooperate with the triangular section 5 for holding a page of a book or the like between the same and said section 5. The triangular section 5, together with tongue 7, forms a clasp, whereby the hook-mark may be removably scoured upon a book. The tongue 7 is provided, as shown, with spaced transverse slits 8.

In Fig. 2 is illustrated a. strip of metal. such as ordinary steel, and this strip of metal is first bent intermediate its ends to form a. substantially U-shaped member having its sides substantially parallel. The strip of metal after being bent and having the shape as above described, is tempered to form a spring member 9. It is obvious that the spring member 9 will tend to retain its original substantially U-shape, and when distorted, will return to its original shape when released.

In assembling the two parts of the bookmark, the blank or body portion 1 is first bent intermediate its ends, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and the substantially U-shaped spring member 9 is inserted within the slits 4 and 8, whereby the same is detachably connected with the blank 1. Special attention is called to the fact that one end of the spring member 9 is connected with the tongue 7.

In the use of the device as a book-mark, the same is applied to a book, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The triangular section 5 and tongue 7 are mounted upon the back 10 of the book, in such a manner that said tongue and triangular section are upon opposite sides of said back. It is obvious that the spring 9 will hold the book mark upon the back, in such a manner thatthe same will not be subjected to accidental displacement, while it may be removed if desired. The arrow head 2 then engages a leaf 11 of the book, and thus keeps the place in the book, and yet permits of each leaf being turned by the reader. This form of book markis very handy inasmuch as the reader need not re move the book mark or otherwise manipulate the same, when it is desired to turn over a leaf.

The blank 1 may be provided with suitable printing matter, so that the book-mark may serve as a suitable advertising novelty. The spring 9, may also be connected with the blank 1 in any suitable manner, and I do not restrict myself alone, to the employment of the slits 4 and 8, as above described.

hen the device is to be used as a paper clip, the same is connected with a blotter or the like, and the loose sheets of papers are then placed between the head 2 and the blotter.

I wish it understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that certain changes can be resorted to, in the shape, size and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As an article of manufacture, a device of the'character described, comprising a blank of suitably flexible material having approximately the shape of an arrow, one end of said blank serving as a pointer, the other end of said blank being provided with a tongue stamped from the same, said blank being bent upon itself intermediate its ends, and a substantially U-shaped spring connected with said blank to give the same a desired degree of stiffness.

2. As an article of manufacture, a device of the character described, comprising a blank of suitably flexible material having approximately the shape of an arrow, one end of said blank serving as a pointer and the other end thereof being provided with a tongue stamped from the same, said blank being bent upon itself intermediate its ends, and a substantially U-shaped spring detachably connected with said blank to give the same a desired degree of stiffness.

3. As an article of manufacture, a device of the character described, comprising a blank of fibrous flexible material having approximately the shape of an arrow, one end of said blank serving as a pointer and the other end thereof being provided with a tongue stamped from the same, said blank being bent upon itself intermediate its ends and being provided with slots formed therethrough, one of the slots being formed upon said tongue, and a substantially U-shaped spring connected with said blank by insertion within said slots, whereby said blank is given a desired degree of stiffness.
