This invention relates to pad holders.
An object of this invention is to provide a pad holder having means to support a pad in such a way that the leaves thereof may be turned to the back, leaving a blank page in front ready for use.
A further object of this invention is to provide a pad holder of the character described in the form of a folder provided with a swinging arm on which the pad is adapted to be mounted, said arm being pivoted adjacent the fold of the folder and between the sides thereof, so that the pad may be swung relative to the sides of the folder, thus permitting free use of both sides of the folder, and also facilitating mounting of the pad on the swinging arm.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a pad holder of the character described having an arm pivoted to a link, which in turn is pivoted to the folder, the arm having means to removably grip the back of the pad for supporting the pad, said arm being adapted to be positioned in spaced, parallel relation to a side or wall of the folder, thus giving room for used pages which may be turned to the back of the pad and between said arm and said side of said folder.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a pad holder of the character described in the form of a folder having an arm pivoted adjacent the fold of the folder and between the sides of the folder, and located adjacent the upper edge of the folder, said arm having means to engage the back of a pad of the type wherein the leaves are mounted on a wire coil or ring,
so that the coil may be positioned outside of the folder, whereby as the number of pages or leaves of the pad decreases the bulk of the folder with the pad correspondingly decreasing.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a pad holder of the character described, comprising a folder and means removably mounted thereon for detachably supporting a pad.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a durable and compact pad holder of the character described, which shall be easy to manipulate, inexpensive to manufacture, attractive in appearance, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements,
and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, I0 designates a pad holder embodying the invention. The same comprises a. folder II made of leather, leatherette, paper, cardboard, or any other suitable material. The folder II comprises a pair of front and back sides, walls or sections I2 and I3 interconnected by a central fold portion I4. Any suitable pockets I20. and I3a may be stitched to the inner surfaces of sections I2 and I3. The sections I2 and I3 may be of substantially the same size.
Attached to the inner surface of section I3, adjacent the upper edge thereof, and adjacent the central fold I4, is a plate II having at the inner edge thereof, a rolled over bearing portion I9 parallel to said fold. Hinged to the bearing I9, is a link 2!] having parallel, horizontal portions 2| and 22 interconnected by upper and lower end portions 23. Portion 2| is journalled in bearing I9, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawmgs.
Hinged to portion 22 of the link 20 is an arm 25 on which a pad 26 is adapted to be detachably mounted in the manner hereinafter appearing. Arm 25 may be made of a single elongated strip of metal. The same comprises a straight portion 21, from one end of which there extends a bearing 28, rotatably receiving said portion 22 of the link. Extending from the bearing 28 is a prong portion 29 parallel to portion 21. Extending from the opposite end of portion 21 is a bent back prong portion 30, symmetrical to prong portion 29. Prong portions 29 and 39 are parallel to portion 21.
The length of arm 25 is substantially equal to the width of section I3, so that the arm does not project beyond said section. It will now be understood that the arm 25 may swing about the link 20.
The pad 26 mounted on arm 25 is of the type generally known as spiral pads. The same comprises a cardboard, substantially stiff back member 36, and a plurality of leaves 31, said back. member and the leaves being formed with registering openings 38, receiving a helical wire coil 40 which binds the sheets and backing member together.
The back member 36 is inserted between prong portions 29 and. 30 and portion 2'l, as illustrated in the drawings, being frictionally gripped thereb'etween. The coil is preferably disposed above the upper edges of sections Hand 1 3. The leaves 31 of the pad 26 he on top of portion 27.
When the folder is open, the leaves 5'! are presented. The leaves 31 after being used may be swung over through an angle of 360 degrees, around to the back of arm 25.
It will be notedthat'arm 25 may be positioned in spaced parallel relation to section I3, giving room for the turned back sheets or leaves. When there are no turned back leaves, arm 25 may be swung to'the position shown in Fig. figagainst section I3 of the folder. As the leaves are turned back'betwe'en the'back member 36'and section I3, the arm 25 will naturally moveawayfrom said section, said link'being thereby caused to swing from the position shown in Fig. 6 to the position shown in Fig. 3, where it is perpendicular to section I3.
It will be noted that prongs 29 and 35 are located between portion 21 and section I3, room for the prongs bein provided because of the link 29. If desired, however, the prongs may be formed on the front of 'arm25' instead of on the back thereof.
It will be noted that the pad may be removed by merely pulling the back upwardly until it is disengaged from arm 25. With the present construction, it is possible to" save notes. The sheets which'need not be saved may be torn off, and the sheets it is desired to save, maybe swung around to the back of the pad.
Since arm 25 with the pad thereon may be swung about its'hinge, the pockets I20 and I311 are accessible for use. Furthermore the inser tion of the pad is facilitated by swinging the arm away from section I'3. The arm 25 is located near the upper edge of section I 3, so as not to make the folder too bulky.

Hinged to the link 5| is an arm '52, on which the pad 25 is detachably mounted in a manner hereinafter appearing.
Arm5'2 is made 'of'a'single strip of spring metal and comprises superimposed portions 54 v and 55 interconnected byabearing portion 56 rotatably mounted on the link.
The outer end of portion 55 may be bent, as at 51, toward portion-5'4, said'bent portion extending beyond the outer en'd'ofsaidportion 54. The
nected' arms, one arm being journalled'in'sa'id back 35 of the pad may be inserted between portions 54 and 55, and is frictionally held therebetween. Said back may be inserted by pushing the same between portions 54 and 55. The bent over portion '51 prevents the back from slipping out of arm 52.
In Figs. 8 and 9 there is shown a pad holder IIlb embodying another modified form of the invention. The pad holder IDb comprises a folder 60 having sections BI and 62. Stitched to section 62 is an elongated pocket 63, open at its inner end, as at 64, adjacent the fold 55 between the sections BI and 62.
Inserted into the pocket 63 is a tongue 68 having'a bearing portion 69 at one end located outide", of thepocket. Hinged to the bearing 59 is a link It, and hinged tosaid link is an arm II having a pair of prongs I2 cut from said arm and pressed forwardly into spaced parallel relation to the body of said arm. Back 35 of the pad may be inserted between the prongs I2 and the body of the arms TI. 7
If desired, the arm II with its link l5; and tongues 68, may be removed from the folder 65.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various'possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changesmightbe made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinset forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as"illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination, a folder having front and back sections interconnected by a fold portion, a link pivoted to the inside ;-of the folder about an axis parallel to and adjacent the fold portion, and an arm pivoted to said link about an axis parallel to the first axis, and likewise disposed adjacent said fold portion, said arm being disposed adjacent the upper edge of the folder and adapted to swing from the front section to the back section thereof, and said arm being located substantially wholly'between'the front and back sections of said folder, said arm having means to support a pad mounted thereon and located'between the front and back sections of the folder, and swingable with said arm from the back to the front sections.
2. In combination, a folder'having front and back sections interconnected by a flexible fold portion, a hinge'member attached to one of said sections and formed with a hinge bearing located adjacent the fold portion, the axis of said bearher having parallel portions forming a groove therebetween to frictionally receive the back of a pad mounted on said member.

In'combination, a folder having front and back sections interconnected by a flexible fold portion, a hinge member attached to one of said sectionsand formed with a hinge bearing located adjacent-the fold portion, the axis of said bearing-being parallel to andclosely adjacent to said fold -portion, a link having parallel interconhinge bearing, a member made of a single piece of strip metal formed with a bearing at one end receiving the other arm of said link, said member having parallel portions forming a groove therebetween to frictionally receive the back of a pad mounted on said member, said member being wholly located between said sections and adjacent the upper end of said folder.
4. In combination, a folder having front and back sections interconnected by a flexible fold portion, a hinge member attached to one of said sections and formed with a hinge bearing located adjacent the fold portion, the axis of said bearing being parallel to and closely adjacent to said fold portion, a link having parallel interconnected arms, one arm being journalled in said hinge bearing, a member made of a single piece of strip metal formed with a bearing at one end receiving the other arm of said link, said member having parallel portions forming a groove therebetween to frictionally receive the back of a pad mounted on said member, said member being wholly located between said sections and adjacent the upper end of said folder, one of said parallel portions of said member having a curved lip at the end thereof overlying the outer end of the other parallel portion of said member to retain the back of the pad against slipping out sideways from said member.
5. A folder comprising a front section and a back section interconnected by a flexible fold portion, a pocket stitched to the inside of one of said sections, said pocket being open at the end thereof adjacent the fold portion, a plate inserted into said pocket and formed with a bearing disposed outside of the pocket, said bearing having an axis parallel to the fold portion and disposed adjacent to said fold portion, a link hinged to said bearing, and an arm hinged to said link about an axis parallel to said bearing, said arm having parallel portions adapted to receive the back of a pad therebetween,

A folder comprising a front section and a back section interconnected by a flexible fold portion, a pocket stitched to the inside of one of said sections, said pocket being open at the end thereof adjacent the fold portion, a plate inserted into said pocket and formed with a bearing disposed outside of the pocket, said bearing having an axis parallel to the fold portion and disposed adjacent to said fold portion, a link hinged to said bearing, and an arm hinged to said link about an axis parallel to said bearing, said arm having parallel portions adapted to receive the back of a pad therebetween, said arm being located wholly within said sections and adjacent the upper end of said fold.

In combination, a folder having front and back sections interconnected by a flexible fold portion, hinge means at the inside of the folder and adjacent the fold portion, including an element disposed longitudinally of said fold portion, and disposed adjacent to said fold portion, and an arm rotatably mounted on said element, and adapted to be swung about said element from the back section to the front section, said arm being located between said back and front sections, and said arm having parallel portions to frictionally and removably receive therebetween a back of a pad disposed between the back and front sections of said folder and swingable with said arm from the back section to the front section.

In combination, a folder having front and back sections interconnected by a flexible fold portion, hinge means at the inside of the folder and adjacent the fold portion, including an element disposed longitudinally of said fold portion, and disposed adjacent to said fold portion, and an arm rotatably mounted on said element, and adapted to be swung about said element from the back section to the front section, said arm being located between said back and front sections, and means on said arm to removably support a pad disposed between the back and front sections of said folder and swingable with said arm from the back section to the front section, said arm comprising a single piece of strip metal formed with a bearing at one end to rotatably receive said element, and having parallel portions adapted to frictionally receive therebetween the back of the pad supported on said arm.
