Claims. 1

This invention relates to a loose-leaf memorandum pad and novel container therefor, the container being applicable also to various other uses, as for the packaging of snapshots, for eX- ample, and wherever its novel features of construction make it adaptable.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a container preferably of heavy paper or thin paper board construction, using a single blank per container, the container being assembled with a few simple and inexpensive folding operations without the necessity for the gumming of any portions thereof.

Another important object consists in the provision of a container of the ing a beveled end wall so as to cause a corresponding fanning out of the leaves of the loose-leaf pad carried in the container, whereby to facilitate removal of the top sheet and successive sheets one at a time, besides affording a container of more attractive appearance and one which can more readily be entered into a pocket.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. l is a front view of of which are broken away construction;

Fig. 3 is a front view of the container as it appears when tacked to the wall in a home or store as a convenient memorandum pad adjacent a telephone, for example, and

The same reference numerals are applied to corresponding parts throughout the four views.

As stated before, my improved container is pref erably made from a single blank of heavy paper or thin paper board, it being important that the material be relatively stiff but reasonably flexible. The blank shown in Fig. 4 comprises a front flap portion I0, a back portion I and outer and inner pocket front wall portions I2 and I3 respectively, [4 being a top wall portion, and I5 and I6 being outer and inner bottom wall portions. Scoring lines crosswise of the blank define the top wall portion, and scoring lines |8 define the outer bottom wall portion, there being a single scoring line H! separating the outer and inner pocket front wall portions and a single scoring line separating the inner end wall portion |B from the inner pocket front wall portion. The portions it, |5, I6 and 2| can, of course, be varied in size to suit the thinness or thickness of the package to be produced.

The blank is folded along the line I9 so as to superimpose the inner pocket front wall portion upon the outer pocket front Wall portion, and, at the same time, superimpose the inner bottom wall portion E6 on the outer bottom wall portion I5. The next fold is along the registering lines I8 and 20 to define the double thickness bottom wall 25 for the pocket 26 next to the double thickness front wall 21 for the pocket, and then there is a fold along the other line |8 to bring the double thickness front wall 21 of the pocket into parallelism with the back portion I, ready for the enbetween the inner and outer front walls of the pocket. The side edge flaps 23 are then folded upwardly on the lines 24 ready for insertion, and the side walls 2| are folded inwardly on the lines 22 as the flaps 23 are entered between the inner and outer front walls of the pocket, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. There remains then only the folding upwardly and inwardly of the blank along the lines H to define the top 28 of the container and dispose the front flap It! in parallel relation with the back I The container may now be filled with memorandum paper, as indicated at M in Fig. 2, and the lower free edge portion 29 of the front flap can be tucked inside the double thickness front wall 21 of the pocket to close the container and protect its contents against soiling when, for example, the contain-er is carried in a pocket or pocketbook for handy use, as intended. Attention is called to the fact that portions I5 and I2 of the blank are slightly wider than the rest of the blank, as indicated at 30. This widening is just enough to overlap the side wall portions 2| when the blank is folded and the side edge flaps 23 are entered between the walls I2 and I3 of the double walled front 21, the side edges of the portions l2 and H) of the blank accordingly lying substantially flush with the outer face of the side walls 2| of the pocket 26 for neatness in appearance, as indicated in Fig. 1. By virtue of this widening at 30, the beveled lower edges 3| of the side walls 2| also provide support for the bottom wall pocket 26 at an angle of approximately 45 with respect to the back I I, so as to provide a beveled bottom 25 for the pocket 26. Of course, the side edge flaps 23, which are approximately equal in Width to the walls [2 and I3 forming the double front Wall 21 of the pocket 26, when entered between these walls, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, toether with the inner bottom wall It braced against the juncture of the back wall H and the out-er bottom wall l5, serve to tie the parts of the container together in the final assembled form without any gumming and maintain the bottom wall 25 of the pocket 26 in the inclined position. The stack of memorandum paper M fitting in the pocket 26 is fanned out to fit the beveled bottom of the pocket 26, as clearly appears in Fig. 2, and in that way the top 28 of the container is likewise beveled by contact with the beveled top of the stack of paper, and the paper-filled container,

therefore, presents an unusually attractive appearance.

In use, the sheets of paper M can be easily removed one by one by virtue of the fanning out of the stack in the manner shown, because the upper memorandum sheet has its upper edge offset enough with respect to the upper edge of the next sheet so that it can be picked on from the stack without any difficulty and without likelihood "of withdrawing more than just the one sheet desired. This greatly facilitates the use of this article and means -a saving in time. This feature, while particularly advantageous in connection with a loose-leaf memorandum pad, is also of advantage when the container is used for the packaging of snapshots, for example, or business cards. It will be obvious that although in most instances the container shown 'in Figs. 1 and '2 will be carried by the user in the pocket or pocketbook, some will find it convenient to tack the container "to the wall or onto any suitable support, as illustrated'in Fig. 3, the numeral 32 designating a tack driven through the upper end portion 'of the flap l0 after the flap has been tucked behind the pad M so as to provide a double thickness backing. The pocket 25 under such conditions can be used conveniently as a support fora pencil 33, the end of which can be slipped in between the pad M and the front wall 2'! er the pocket 26. A portion of the wall or other support to which the container is fastened is indicated at 3b. The device can be used in this way very conveniently in the home, 'office, store or telephone booth. When distributed for advertising purposes, an advertisement may be placed on the front walk-21, ahdQif desired, also along the beveled bottom wan "25 of the pocket 26,-oron any other moreor less exposed portion of the article.

It is believed "the foregoing descriptionconveys a good understanding of the objects and advantages of my invention. The appended claims have been drawn'to cover all legitimate modifications and adaptations.

'I claim:

1. A container of the kind described formed from a single piece of sheet material without necessity for gumming of any portions and comprising a back, narrow side and bottom portions adapted to be folded forwardly from the side and bottom edges of said back to p ovide side and bottom walls for a pocket on the lower front portion of said back, the side portions having their lower edges inclined upwardly relative to the bottom of the back wall, the bottom portion being of greater transverse width than the side portions and. adapted to coverthe inclined lower edges'of the side portions, 'a lower'end portion integral with the bottom portion adapted to be folde'dupwardlyfrom the' outer edge of saidna'rrow bottom portion, said lower end portion be ing adapted to be folded upon itself to provide a double thickness front wall for the pocket adapted to receive between its Walls side edge flaps on the side walls for retaining the side, bottom, and front walls of said pocket in assembled relationship, and side edge flaps on the outer edges of said narrow side portions and adapted to be folded inwardly and entered between the walls of the double thickness front wall of said pocket.

'2. A container as set forth in claim 1 including an extension on said lower end portion of greater transverse width than the side portions and of substantially the same width as the first mentioned bottom portion extending from the lower end of the inner wall of said double thickness front wall and arranged to abut the lower end of said back when said lower end portion is folded upon itself to form the double thickness front wall of said pocket, whereby to form a buttressed double thickness inclined bottom wall for said pocket.

3. -As an article of manufacture, a foldable blank for a container of the kind described comprising an elongated substantially rectangular body portion of "flexible sheet material, having substantially parallel transverse score lines to define a back portion a foldable narrow bottom portion, a foldable front portion and another foldable front portion in contiguous relation, and projecting opposed foldable side portions on the lower end of the back portion defined 'by vertical score lines in longitudinal alignment with the side edges of the back portion, said side portions being each divided by a score line substantially parallel with the first score line to define a side wall portion and a relatively foldable flap portion, said side portions being of equal width transversely and having their lower edges inclined upwardly from the lower end of the 'back portion, and said bottom -portion being of greater transverse width than said side portions to span the inclined lower edges of the side portions.

'4. An article of manufacture as set forth in claim -3 including another foldable narrow bottom portion on the end of the second front portion, which "is also of greater transverse width than the side portions, substantially as and for the-purpdse'described.

5 An article of manufacture as set forth in claim '3 including a foldable narrow top portion on the opposite end "of the back portion from the foldable bottom portion'and of approximately the same transverse width :as said bottom portion, and "a foldable front flap portion foldable relative to the outer edge of the top portion and of 'lesslengththantheback portion.

'6. As 'an article of manufacture, a foldable blank for 'a 'containerof-the kind describedcomprising an elongated substantially rectangular body portion of flexible sheet material, having substantially parallel transverse score lines to definea back-portion, a foldablenarrow bottom portion, a foldable front portion and another foldable front portion'in contiguous relation, and projecting opposed folda'ble's'ide portions on the lower end of the back portion defined by vertical score lines in longitudinal alignment with the side edges of the back portion, said side portions being'eachdivided'by a score line substantially parallel with'the firstscore line to define a side wall 'portion and a rel'atively foldable flap portion, thelo'wer edge of each foldable side Wall-portion extending at an acute angle-relative to the ad jacent longitudinal edge of the body away from the foldable narrow bottom portion, the foldable narrow bottom portion and first named front portion being of a slightly greater width than the back portion and other front portion so as to provide laterally projecting side portions when the blank is folded, and the width of each of the side wall portions being less than the transverse width of the foldable narrow bottom portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.

7. As an article of manufacture, a foldable blank for a container of the kind described comprising an elongated substantially rectangular body portion of flexible sheet material, having substantially parallel transverse score lines to define a back portion, a foldable narrow bottom portion, a foldable front portion and another foldable front portion in contiguous relation, there being also another foldable narrow bottom portion on the end of the second foldable front portion, and projecting opposed foldable side portions on the lower end of the back portion defined by vertical score lines in longitudinal alignment with the side edges of the back portion, said side portions being each divided by a score line substantially parallel with the first score line to define a side wall portion and a relatively foldable flap portion, said side portions being of equal width transversely and having their lower edges inclined upwardly from the lower end of the back portion, and said bottom portions being both of the same transverse width greater than the transverse width of the side portions to span the inclined lower edges of the side portions, the

first foldable narrow bottom portion and first named front portion being of a slightly greater width than the back portion and other front portion and bottom portion so as to provide laterally projecting side portions when the blank is folded, substantially as and for the purpose described.

8. As an article of manufacture, a foldable blank for a container of the kind described comprising an elongated substantially rectangular body portion of flexible sheet material, having substantially parallel transverse score lines to define a back portion, a foldable narrow bottom portion, a foldable front portion and another foldable front portion in contiguous relation, and projecting opposed foldable side portions on the lower end of the back portion defined by vertical score lines in longitudinal alignment with the side edges of the back portion, said side portions being each divided by ascore line substantially parallel with the first score line to define a side wall portion and a relatively foldable flap portion, the lower edge of each foldable side wall portion extending at an acute angle relative to the adjacent longitudinal edge of the body away from the foldable narrow bottom portion, the foldable narrow bottom portion and first named front portion being of a slightly greater width than the back portion and other front portion so as to provide laterally projecting side portions when the blank is folded, and the width of each of the side wall portions being less than the transverse width of the foldable narrow bottom portion, said article including a foldable narrow top portion on the upper end of the back portion, and a foldable front flap portion foldable relative to the outer edge of the top portion, said top portion and flap portion both being of the same width as the back portion, said top portion being of the same transverse width as the bottom portion, and said flap portion being of less length than the back 6 portion, substantially as and for the purpose described. v

As an article of manufacture, a foldable blank for a container of the kind described comprising an elongated substantially rectangular body portion of flexible sheet material, having substantially parallel transverse score lines to define a back portion, a foldable narrow bottom portion, a foldable front portion and another foldable front portion in contiguous relation, there being also another foldable narrow bottom portion on the end of the second foldable front portion, and projecting opposed foldable side portions on the lower end of the back portion defined by vertical score lines in longitudinal alignment with the side edges of the back portion, said side portions being each divided by a score line substantially parallel with the first score line to define a side wall portion and a relatively foldable flap portion, said side portions being of equal width transversely and having their lower edges inclined upwardly from the lower end of the back portion, and said bottom portions being both of the same transverse width greater than the transverse width of the side portions to span the inclined lower edges of the side portions, the first foldable narrow bottom portion and first named front portion being of a slightly greater width than the back portion and other front portion and bottom portion so as to provide laterally projecting side portions when the blank is folded, said article including a foldable narrow top portion on the upper end of the back portion, and a foldable front fiap portion foldable relative to the outer edge of the top portion, said top portion and flap portion both being of the same width as the back portion, said top portion being of the same transverse width as the bottom portions, and said fiap portion being of less length than the back portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.

A container of the kind described formed from a single piece of sheet material folded to the form desired and comprising a back, narrow side and bottom portions folded forwardly from the side and bottom edges of said back to provide side and bottom walls for a pocket on the lower front portion of said back, the side portions having their lower edges inclined upwardly relative to the bottom of the back wall, the bottom portion being of greater transverse width than the side portions and adapted to cover the inclined lower edges of the side portions, a lower end portion integral with the bottom portion folded upwardly from the outer edge of said narrow bottom portion and folded upon itself to provide a double thickness front wall for the pocket between which thicknesses side edge fiaps on the side walls may be received to retain the side, bottom, and front walls of said pocket in assembled relationship, side edge flaps on the outer edges of said narrow side portions folded inwardly and entered between the walls of the double thickness front wall of said pocket, and an extension on the end of said lower end portion extending across the top of the inclined bottom wall of said pocket and serving by abutment with the back to hold the inner wall of the double thickness front Wall of said pocket in a fixed spaced relation to the back.
