HARRY SGHANDEIN AND MONROE P. LIND, or PHILADELPHIA, rnNNsYLvANIA.
FOLDING DISPLAY-Box.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY SOHANDEIN and MONROE P. LIND, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the countyof Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use- Display- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.- V
This invention relates generally to folding boxes, and pertains especially to the foldable display boxes of the kind usually made of paste-board.
The invention is designed especially for displaying boxes containing confections, chewing gum, perfumery, etc., andthe object of the invention is to provide a box in which such articles of merchandise are packed, shipped and displayed, and from which such articles may be dispensed.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a foldable box for packing, shipping and displaying articles of merchandise,
such novel and peculiar construction of the box blank as to be expeditiously folded into ahbox, shaped for applying stepstheretoso t at step-like tiers, and are displayed in such or the box, andw to furnish special foldable paste-board steps for holding and displaying such articles in tiers. 0 Various other objects, advantages and improved results are to be found in the practical application-and use of the invention, notably the reduction in cost'of such boxes,
the avoidance of folding or unfolding the boxes for exhibiting or displaying the artlcles therein after shipment, the avoidance of setting up the goods or articles in the boxes for display and sale after shipment,
the economy of spacein packing and shipand the advantage of folding ping the goods,
. and reshipping the cover for repeated use.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box and its cover embody-.
ing this invention-and showing the same in Specification of Letters Patent.
I Application filed December 31, 1909. Serial No. 535,869.

The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings. 4
The combination packing, shipping and display box with and its steps, is composed of or struck from a sheet of paste-board in one piece, the back 1' of the box having ends 2, foldable on the dotted lines a-a, which ends are provided with an ear 3, foldable on the dotted lines 0-'c, and a" flap 4. fold'ableon the dotted lines d.d extends from the top edge of the back" 1. I
The box has a triple bottom the middle one of which is formed by the pieces 5 and 6 extending from the ends 2 and foldable on the dotted line b?) to over-lap each other. The piece 5 has a slit 7 through which is meeting them together. The outside bottom 9 the inside bottom 10 and the box front 11 are formed by folding the blank piece '(on the dotted lines e-e, ff, 9-9 and hh) which intervenes parts being folded so as to form double thickness of paste-boardin the front 11, with the ears 3 inserted between the foldsof the front, for the purpose of connecting the ends 2, with the front lland thereby closing the front corners of the-box. In folding the board to form the ends, bottom and front, the pieces 5 and 6 are locked together upon the outside bottom 9, and the 10 ispressed down between the ends and the pieces 5 and 6,;the"
Fig. 10' is a similar the exceptionof its cover inserted a. tongue 8 of the piece 6 for coninside bottom upon the middle bottom or pieces 5 and-6,
which produces a stiff rigid bottom and braces the box ends. The box being in con dition to have applied thereto the steps, they will now be described in detail.
The upper or back step 12 is composed of a single piece of paste-board and is folded and glued into rectangular shape, having one edge thereof projecting vertically so as to form a front flange 13 lor the top of the step, and a space 14 in which small boxes 15 or-other suitable articles are placed for packing, displaying and sale. This step is glued or otherwise fastened to the back of the box so as to form the space or pocket 14 between the box back and the flange 13 to hold the articles to be displayed.
The front or lower step 16 is only about half as deepfias the step 12, but is formed in the same manner with a flange 17 in front so that when the step 16 is secured to the bottom of the box between the step and the box front 11, there is a space or pocket 18 formed between the-flange 17, and the front of the step 12, for displaying articles of merchandise. Another space or pocket 19,
for the same purpose, is formed by and between the front of the step 16 and the box front 11. WVhen the flap 4 is bent over the steps its free end is inserted ba'ek of the box front 1.1, for temporarily holding the flap down. \Vhen the flap 4 is not so used, it stands vertically above the box back for advertising purposes. The front of the flanges 1.3 and 17 are also used for advertising the goods or merchandise displayed in-the box.
The box cover is made from a single piece of paste-board and comprises a top 20, havflap .21 foldable on the dotted lilies 'i-i, a side 22 foldable on the dotted line j ends 23 having top'wings 24 folded on the dotted line lal" when the ends are folded on the dotted lines Z-l so as to form .a support for the top 20, and brace the ends 23. The otherside 25 of the cover is rojected from one of the ends 23, and f0 ded on'the dotted line m-m, and secured to a flange 26 folded on the dotted line nn at the outer edge of the other of said ends 23.
The bottom edge of the sides 22 and 25 of the cover are provided with a notch 27 to per- 1 mit the box to be grasped in removing the cover therefrom.
lt will be seen that the box contains spaces or pockets for the display of three steplike tiers of merchandise; that such tiers may be multiplied by enlarging the box; that the merchandise contained in the box is covered and. protected by the box flap when desired, without applying the cover; that by reason of the special compact construction of the box, a greater amount of merchandise than usual with boxes of equal size may be packed, shipped and displayed therein.
It is obvious that the size, shape and material of the box may be varied within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A foldable shipping and display box comprising a back, ends extended from the back and provided with ears, an outer bottom extending from the back, a double front extending from the outer bottom and folded over the ears, an inner bottom projecting from said front, extensions of the box ends folded between the said two box bottoms, and step supports receding from the front to the back ofth'e box.
2. .A foldable shipping and display box comprising a back, ends extended from the, back, ears projected from the front edge of the said ends, an outer bottom projecting from the back, a box front extending from the outer bottom and folded over the ears, an inner bottom extending from said front. to the back of the box, and extensions of the box ends forming a double botto m between the said outer and inner bottoms.
In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
